For the Acrylic Works 9 competition, the organizers are looking for the best in acrylic (丙烯酸) painting of a variety of styles and subjects. The entries will be judged in two rounds according to artistic technique, design and creative elements, as well as overall impression and impact. Winners' works will be shown in Artists magazine.

Splash 23

Prize: $2, 000 first prize, $1, 000 second prize Entry Fee: $45

Requirements: Open to artists in the United States and Canada

Closing Date: June 14, 2021

For the Splash 23 contest, the organizers are looking for original watercolor paintings. Each entry must be painted with watercolor. However, some minor use of other mediums may be acceptable. Top paintings of winners will appear in a special edition of Watercolor Artist magazine.

The Lumen Prize for Digital Art

Prize: $4, 000 first prize Entry Fee: $48 for two works

Requirements: Open to artists worldwide

Closing Date: June 8, 2021

This digital art competition is organized by Lumen Art Projects Ltd, a non-profit organization that's aimed at providing new opportunities for digital artists around the world. Categories include Still, Moving Image, 3D/ Interactive and Artificial Intelligence.

California Award

Requirements: Open to artists in California

Closing Date: July 31, 2021

Hosted by the Brea Gallery, the competition intends to provide a great opportunity for all artists based in the state of California. All artworks will be considered. And there is also a solo (单独的) show opportunity for artists who submit a body of work containing 5-10 pieces.

My brother and I had the typical older-sister, younger-brother relationship. He loved to annoy me and I wanted to boss him around. I am five years older so we didn't really share friends or activities but we always got along well. That all changed in 2013 when my mom died.

Sorrow does strange things to people. My brother and I dealt with it differently. He was 18 then and put his feelings into finishing his final year of high school. I turned to drug. I'd been using a painkiller for years to help with my kidney disease and I'd never abused it. But that changed in a moment. My mother's death took over my life. I remember swallowing a handful of painkillers and then calling a local drug dealer to bring me more pills.

My addiction progressed and I became even more irresponsible. I even risked losing my son when child protective services became concerned enough about my ability to be a good parent. I'll never forget the fear on my brother's face when he came to the police station. My brother was confused by my decisions. He didn't realize addiction was a mental illness. I could see the anger and hopelessness in his eyes. Seeing him walk away from me was one of the worst feelings I've ever experienced.

I started treatment. As my brother saw the work I put into my recovery, he began to let go of his anger. Little by little, we repaired our relationship. I know our mother would be proud. I remember someone telling me that my mother's death would either destroy our family or bring us closer. At first, it tore our family apart but, from ashes to beauty, I firmly believe her death and all of the hardship along the way have made us closer than ever. I am forever grateful.

We can video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of Everest. But communicating with a submarine (潜艇) or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater and airborne devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water. Sonar(声呐)signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of the water rather than reaching the air.

Now, researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication. "What we've shown is that it's actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air，" says Fadel Adib, a professor at MJT's Media Lab, who led the research.

The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations (震动)corresponding to the Is and Os of the data. A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF. It has any number of potential real-world uses, Adib says. It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane's black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.

Right now the technology is low-resolution. The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions-high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction- air to water.

If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect "texting while diving" to be the latest underwater fashion.

Female scientists with PhDs earn substantially less than their male counterpart (职位相当的人). A survey tracked more than 55, 700 people who earned PhDs between 2018 and 2019. Overall, about 35% of all PhD recipients reported having a permanent job lined up at graduation, among which men reported an average annual salary of $95, 000. Women reported a salary of $72, 500, a gap of $22, 500. In a similar survey in 2020, the overall gender（性别） gap in salaries was $18, 000.

Men were over-represented in relatively high-paying fields such as computer science and engineering, but inequality continued to exist even within fields. Men with permanent jobs in the life sciences, for example, reported an expected median salary of $87, 000, compared with $80, 000 for women. In mathematics and computer science, men reported an expected median salary of $125, 000; for women, that figure was $101, 500.

Salaries and career paths can vary greatly from one scientific discipline to another, says Michael Roach, an economist at Cornell University. Roach is looking closely into differences in career outcomes for US PhD holders. Roach says it's clear that women, on average, earn less than men even when all other factors are taken into account. In industrial research and development, there are differences that can't be explained by ability or degree or the status of a university.

The root causes of those differences remain unclear, Roach says. One possibility is that men are more willing to negotiate for higher salaries. Roach notes that some women might have to make sacrifices to start families, but it would be a mistake to blame all income gaps on lifestyle decisions. “A lot of men want to spend more time with their families too, ” he says.

The report shows that a PhD improves overall career and salary prospects, but the actual value clearly depends on the field of study, the demands of the marketplace and, for reasons that still aren't clear, the person holding the degree. Researchers are still looking at the factors that might keep women from achieving the same level of success that equally qualified men are able to achieve.

Many people think of guys as being carefree when it comes to their appearance. But in fact, a lot of guys spend plenty of time in front of the mirror. They care just as much as girls do about their body image.

Body image is a person's opinions and feelings about his or her own body and physical appearance . You appreciate your body for its capabilities(能力) and accept its imperfections. Here are some ideas：

Recognize your strengths. Different body types are good for different things.  What does your body do well? Maybe your speed, strength, or coordination (协调性) makes you better than others at a certain sport. That may be basketball, table tennis, mountain biking, dancing, or even running. Or perhaps you have non-sports skills, like drawing, painting, singing, playing a musical instrument, writing, or acting.

Exercise regularly. Exercise can help you look good and feel good about yourself. Good physiques (体形) don't just happen. A healthy habit can be as simple as exercising 20 minutes to 1 hour three days a week. Working out can also lift your spirits.

Respect your body! Practicing good habits; regular showering; taking care of your teeth, hair, and skin; wearing clean clothes, and so on－can help you build a positive body image.

Your body is just one part of who you are. Your talent for comedy, a quick wit (智慧), and all the other things make you unique. So try not to let small imperfections take over.

G. So, what can you do to develop a positive body image?

We have, like in many more countries, refugees（难民） in our country. Through the years I have tried to 1 without pay by teaching women our country's language as one of their 2. They have to learn the language, and also our culture, for example, what to 3 when they have to go to the doctor, or how to express what's 4 in such a place like a farm.

Only by learning the language will they be able to 5 activities in our society. Once a year, just before Christmas break, all the women from different countries make delicious food which are 6 for us all together.

Many 7 I have noticed that it seems 8 for women to accept any help than men, probably 9 the children that they have to raise.

Problems with the kids 10 happen due to being in a 11 country with a different culture and another 12. The women often miss their homes very much and feel 13, because they have to get used to this life as 14 as possible. I have seen the 15 and pain in their eyes. It is so good to give some comfort in one way or another, even just to be there for them. And it is really 16 when you make friends.

They and many more new people are trying to 17 up their new homes in this new country. Will we be able to get them out of 18, for everyone? And nowadays, though at times their lives look almost broken, I 19 it won't always. Because wherever we 20, we are together, as we are citizens of the world.
