Ten years ago I used to be very fit. I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn't earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn't a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing. Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn't have any time for things like that any more. There's a lot of stress in my job. Perhaps that is why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all. Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn't believe it. Luckily it wasn't very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven't any time! My job takes everything out of me! Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won't earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don't know what I should do. What do you think?

Halloween dog parades(游行), where dogs get around in fun costumes(服装), are a fairly common scene during this time of the year. However, the largest and most popular gathering of its kind is New York City's Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. The annual event attracts over 300 dogs and their proud owners, who often wear matched costumes to help their four-legged friends win the Best of Show title. Now celebrating its 29th year, the 2019 parade took place at the East River Park Amphitheater on Sunday, October 20. Hundreds of New Yorkers braved the dark weather and light rain to admire the dogs acting as famous persons, fictional books and movie characters, popular foods, and even other animals. Among the most famous were two dogs dressed as Sesame Street's Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. Their owners joined in the fun by dressing up as popular muppets (木偶), Bert and Ernie. A four-legged "Snoop Dogg" also made an appearance, complete with a famous American singers gold chain and sunglasses. A kind-looking dog dressed as Little Red Riding Hood showed up together with a "Big Bad Wolf". The 2019 Best of Show title, which came with a $500 gift card, went to two Yorkshire Terriers dressed as the leading characters from Charles Schulz's bestselling cartoon novel Snoopy and the Red Baron. The well-designed costumes included a doghouse and a model World War I plane, which took the owner over a month to build. A Jack Russell Terrier dressed as a bowl of noodles and his "chef" owner were awarded second place, while a dog and its owners, acting as characters from the 2019 horror movie Midsommar, placed third. Regardless of whether or not they won, the dogs and their owners all had a great time showing off their costumes to the cheering crowds.

The phrase "The early bird catches the worm" may be true. It means people who wake up early get more done than people who don't. Another saying is, "Early to bed, early to rise" makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. " Scientists have found that people who go to bed before 11: 00 p. m. may do better in life than people who sleep around 2: 30 a. m. The researchers are from Birmingham's Centre for Human Brain Health in the UK. Their research showed that people who slept and rose early (early birds) had an advantage over people who slept and woke up late (night owls). There were differences in the brain function of early birds and night owls. The scientists tested 38 people in their research. The people answered questionnaires about their sleeping pattern and when they felt tired during the day. They were then put into an early bird or night owl group based on their answers. All of the people had MRI scans on their brain and did different tests throughout the day. The researchers said there were big differences between the two groups. The early birds said they felt less sleepy and were able to do the tests quicker than the night owls. The researchers said, "Night owls during school have to get up earlier, then they go into work and they have to get up earlier, so they're constantly having to fight against their bad life habits."
