Jeremiad Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution for two of our country's persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It's called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the rubbish, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.

Chip eaters drop off their empty bags at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use liners from old coats to line the insides.

It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they're single—serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is"waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around, "Oleita told the Detroit News.

Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800, 000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags.

Sure, it would be simpler to raise money to buy new sleeping bags. But that's only half the goal for Oleita—whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life—and her fellow volunteers. "We are dedicated to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally, "she says.

As Oleita said, "There's the symbolism of using bags that would otherwise land in the rubbish and using them to help the homeless. It's a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. "

  1. (1) Why did Oleita start the Chip Bag Project?
A . To sell sleeping bags for the poor. B . To raise money for the homeless. C . To return a favor to chip eaters. D . To solve garbage and poverty problems.
  2. (2) How are the collected empty bags handled first?
A . They are washed. B . They are sliced. C . They are ironed. D . They are sewed.
  3. (3) Which of the following is true of Oleita?
A . She is seriously attractive. B . She is heavily independent. C . She is socially responsible. D . She is financially successful.
  4. (4) What can be inferred about garbage and poverty according to Oleita?
A . They are easy to solve. B . They remind us of injustice. C . They are closely connected. D . They are the symbols of society.

LONDON(AP)—Thousands of Britain's iconic red phone boxes will be protected from removal under new rules, the U. K. 's telecommunications regulator said Tuesday. The public payphone boxes may look like out-of-date relics in an age of common smartphones, but regulator Ofcom said they can still be a "lifeline" for people in need.

The regulator is proposing rules to prevent 5, 000 call boxes in areas with poor mobile coverage from being closed down. It said that phone booths in areas considered accident or suicide hotspots, and those that have had more than 52 calls made from them in the past 12 months, would also meet the criteria.

Ofcom said there are still around 21, 000 phone boxes across the country, and that almost 150, 000 calls to emergency services were made from phone boxes from May 2019 to May 2020. Some 45, 000 calls were also made to other helplines like the Samaritans.

"Some of the call boxes we plan to protect are used to make relatively low numbers of calls. But if one of those calls is from an unhappy child, or an accident victim or someone trying to kill himself, that public phone line can be a lifeline at a time of great need, "said Selina Chadha, Ofcom's director of connectivity. "We also want to make sure that people without mobile coverage, often in rural areas, can still make calls, "she added.

BT Group, formerly British Telecom, says nearly half of the phone boxes in the U. K. have been removed due to the growth of the mobile phone industry. It said even if a phone box is scheduled for decommission, it can be adopted by its local community under a plan that lets governments or organizations buy the call box for just£1. So far more than 6, 000 booths have been converted to mini community libraries, art galleries or storage units for life-saving public defibrillators(心脏除颤器).

  1. (1) Why is Britain making new regulations?
A . To reduce accident rates. B . To popularize cell phones. C . To increase calls from the boxes. D . To protect its public phone boxes.
  2. (2) What does the author intend to clarify in paragraph 3?
A . The overuse of emergency services. B . The coverage of public phone boxes. C . The sharp drop in calls from the boxes. D . The importance of public phone boxes.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word "decommission" in paragraph 5 mean?
    A . Change. B . Removal. C . Arrival. D . Share.
  4. (4) What can we infer about the to-be-removed phone boxes according to BT Group?
A . They will cover the communities. B . They will be sold cheaply to the locals. C . They will be adapted for different uses. D . They will serve as government agencies.

A rare wild flower is being re-established in Devon fields thanks to some four-legged helpers. A conservation charity called Planflife has employed donkeys as "ecosystem engineers" to encourage the return of the endangered small-flowered catchfly.

The catchfly was once found all across Britain but now it only grows in small areas of Wales and the south and west of England. Experts blame its decline on modern farming practices. The flower flourished around the edges of sandy fields where farmers grew their crops, but because of weedkillers that were used to remove "unwanted" plants, and fertilisers to boost crop yields, its habitat has largely disappeared.

Plantlife teamed up with the Donkey Sanctuary, a charity that looks after donkeys in the UK and around the world. It owns several farms across Devon and the UK, where it takes care of hundreds of rescued donkeys, as well as maintaining habitats for other wildlife. More than 20, 000 seeds have been scattered on fields at the sanctuary's main Devon farm, and it is hoped that many will grow into plants this summer. They will provide food for threatened bird species such as linnets, yellowhammers and skylarks. Plantlife then aims to get the donkeys themselves involved, testing whether catchfly seeds benefit from being trampled into the ground as the donkeys take their exercise. Many plants have seeds that must be pressed into the soil in order to germinate.

"We're incredibly grateful to partners like the Donkey Sanctuary who are helping these fantastically rare wild flowers come back from the edge of extinction, "Cath Shellswell of Plantlife told The Guardian newspaper. "We look forward to seeing small-flowered catchfly return and we are working with the sanctuary to ensure that this tiny plant has a thriving future. "

  1. (1) Why are donkeys employed in Devon fields?
A . To work in the fields. B . To restore the catchfly. C . To avoid extinction. D . To raise crop yields.
  2. (2) What caused the decline of the catchfly's population?
    A . Soil loss. B . Water pollution. C . Climate change. D . Modern agriculture.
  3. (3) How do donkeys help the catchfly come back?
A . By pressing its seeds into the soil. B . By working the land. C . By providing nutrition for it. D . By spreading its seeds.
  4. (4) What is the best title of the passage?
A . Donkeys help fields flower again. B . Farmland becomes a natural habitat. C . The biodiversity forms on Devon farms. D . The catchfly has a thriving future.

Planting trees is a great way to reduce carbon emissions, but protecting our oceans and coastal ecosystems can do the same?

"Blue carbon" refers to organic carbon which  (store)by the oceans and coastal ecosystems. Mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses are the three main coastal ecosystems that can store large(quantity)of blue carbon. They play a major role in reducing carbon dioxide in the air.

(compare)with ecosystems on the land, coastal ecosystems can store carbon (constant)in the long term. When plants on the coast die, the organic deposits that they become will slowly disappear thanks to the flowing seawater above,  means the carbon will not escape easily but remain stored for hundreds and thousands of years.

China is one of the few blessed all three coastal ecosystems. Tidal marshes are the largest coastal ecosystem in China,(occupy) an area of 5, 448 square kilometers. In comparison, mangroves have a  (small) size. According to the latest data, the total area of China's mangrove forests in 2020  (be)289 square kilometers, and over 70 square kilometers of mangroves are newly planted and restored now.

By protecting and restoring these coastal ecosystems, we can avoid enormous amounts of stored blue carbon going back into  atmosphere, and safeguard wildlife living in these ecosystems.

I was 8 years old. I had little need of luggage. But something about that old leather suitcase appealed to my imagination. The piece was better suited to my grandparents' era than my own. In fact, I had found it in my grandmother's house. Grandmother didn't object, and so the suitcase came to live beneath my bed.

It was a cloudy fall morning, and a fine mist dampened the fallen leaves. I was angry. My mother had slighted me somehow, though now I have no idea what sparked my anger. I was upset, and I wanted to make her pay. I wanted to give her a taste of what life would be like without me.

I would run away.

"Goodbye, Mom. "I stood outside the kitchen door, suitcase grasped firmly in hand.

"Goodbye, Mom, "I repeated twice more, cracking open the swinging door with my foot the final time, to make sure she'd heard.

At last, Mom emerged, wiping her hands on a dish towel. She gave me the once over. I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it.

"I'm leaving, "I said.

I'd rehearsed for the anticipated reaction. The plan was to let her beg for a minute or two, and then I would cave after I was sure of her being sorry.

"Did you pack a lunch?"

Mom's question knocked me off balance. Where were the tears? The begging? The pleas?" I said I'm leaving, "I said. "I'm running away. For…ever. "I drew out the dreaded word, sure it would crack her resolve. Instead, she smiled.

"Well, would you like me to fix you something? A sandwich? Bag of chips? I just made chocolate chip cookies. "

"I'm really going. "I said.

"I can see that."

"Maybe a cookie. "And then, "All right, I'm off."

注意:

1)续写词数应为150左右;

2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I stepped out with fresh-baked cookie in my pocket.

……

A moment later,I began to walk back.
