—Amazing! I have never seen these baby animals.
During the summer holiday, some students might have been busy with travelling, summer camps and all kinds of courses, but a specia1 group of Chinese middle school students decided to taste the hardship of life outside school.
Twelve students in a big city sold vegetables at a local market together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1, 500 yuan. Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rura1(农村的) areas.
"Compared to travelling, such social practice connects us and makes us learn how tough our parents are," said Dalin, 18, to the City Morning Post. Dalin, a senior high graduate, and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They learned to work hard to sell their vegetables. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o'c1ock. Some of them went to the farmer's market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall (临时摊位). To 1ower the cost, they learned to bargain (讲价) with the sellers.
At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled (吆喝) 1oudly to attract (吸引) customers. After severa1 days, they got some experience too. For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. When the vegetables are too heavy, they should give customers an extra plastic bag.
When they finally packed up and went home, they had a small meeting. Everyone took notes and shared their feelings. "We are tired," said Dalin. "But we gained a lot."
There was once a musician. He said he was not afraid of dangerous animals, "Even a bear would be as quiet as the friendliest cat when hearing my music." But he had never played the game, and no one believed him.
A chance to show his words arrived just when a circus (马戏团) came to the town. The musician came to the ringmaster (领班) and told what he could do.
"Wow, that's interesting." The ringmaster said. "We just have three new lions and they haven't worked with the lion tamer (驯兽师) yet. Let's see what you can do with them." The musician agreed and the whole town crowded the hall to see what would happen.
The musician was standing quietly in the center with a smile. Then the ringmaster opened the door of the cage and jumped out angrily a huge lion, shouting and showing his teeth. Everyone was too nervous to breathe.
Still with the smile, the musician began to play. The beautiful music rose, then the lion sat down and began to enjoy the music. Everyone lost themselves in the music. The lion did, too. For the second lion, ________________.
Then it was the third lion's turn to appear and everyone there was waiting for the lion to be quiet just like the other two. But the lion ran up to the man and ate him.
All the people were surprised. The other two lions asked angrily, "What have you done! We were enjoying the music!" The third lion put his paw (爪子) to its ear and said, "Sorry, I can't hear you. I have been deaf for 5 years."

一 . Better luck next time.
Mr. and Mrs. Black opened a small restaurant. In order to attract customers, they put a notice in front of the restaurant that said "Meals on the House for Three Days."
A foreign student who didn't know much English happened to pass by the restaurant on the second day. It was lunchtime and he felt very hungry. "Well, here is a restaurant. I am going to have something to eat."
He walked towards the restaurant when he saw the notice. "American people are really strange. They even eat dinners on their houses! But how can I get up to the top of the house?" he said to himself.
He looked around and found a ladder against a tree nearby. He started climbing up. But as he reached the top, he heard someone shouting at him.
"Hey, what are you doing up there?" Mr. Black shouted at him. Next to him was a policeman. "Doesn't your notice say 'Meals on the House for Three Days'? Is it just a joke?" the foreign student answered.
On hearing this, both Mr. Black and the policeman laughed. "Do you know what ON THE HOUSE means? Look it up in the dictionary," the policeman said.
Dear Li Ming, How's everything going? I've read a lot of stories in English class recently, and the teacher always tells me the importance of reading. How about you? How do you feel about reading? What is your favorite book and what's it about? And what can reading give to us? Please write to me soon. Yours, Anna |
