Books to Read in Your 20s
The Kite Runner
By Khaled Hosseini
As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend (推荐) it.
Firefly Lane
By Kristin Hannah
This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book to your best friend.
Half the Sky
By Nicholas Kristof
For any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression of women and girls.
The Little Prince
By Antoine de Saint
This children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.

Marie, an 85-year-old woman who had been bedridden (卧床不起的) for 10 years, was granted her biggest wish to look at the sea again with help from East Coast Radio and Netcare 911.
About 10 years ago, Marie had an unsuccessful back operation which left her bedridden. She then had to stay in an old age home and needed constant care. “The only time she could go outside was when she was taken to hospital over the years,” said Lucy, Marie’s daughter.
Lucy wrote an e-mail to East Coast Radio in April asking them to help her take her mother to the beach because it was her biggest wish. She told them that her mother just wanted to go and look at the sea and go back again to the home, that’s all. East Coast Radio did an interview with the family and agreed to make her wish come true.
Two weeks later, a team of Netcare 911 paramedics (医护人员) fetched Marie from the old age home and took her in a stretcher to Amanzimtoti Beach. One of the paramedics found a bucket and collected some sea water for her to put her hands in. She also got a chance to touch the sand.
Marie said, “Thanks to these kind people, I could get to the beach again, which may be the last time for me.”

The Torch Festival (火把节) is a traditional festival which is celebrated among some ethnic groups in southwestern China, such as the Yi, Bai, Hani, Lisu, and Lahu, etc. It usually falls on the 24th or 25th of June, with three days of celebrations. The festival came from worship (崇拜) of fire by ancestors (祖先). For some ethnic groups, it’s a tradition in the festival for elders to share farming experience with young people and educate them about taking care of crops.
During the festival, big torches are made to stand in all villages, with small torches placed in front of the door of each house. When night falls, the torches are lit and the villages are bright. At the same time, people walk around the fields and houses, holding small torches and placing the torches in the field corners. Inside the villages, young people are singing and dancing around the big torches that keep burning throughout the night. Other activities like horse races are also held during the festival.
In a horse race of the Yi people in Yunnan, torches are used to form hurdles for riders to get through. The Hani people in Yunnan traditionally tie fruits to torches with strings. When the strings are broken after the torches are lit, people struggle for the fruits for good luck.
For the Lisu people in Sichuan, the festival is an occasion for holding torch parades. Big torches are carried by teams of people, which is like a fire dragon. If different teams meet, it’s a tradition to exchange the big torches with one another.

Growing up, your mom probably kept telling you that you should make your bed in the morning. But it’s time to put this little habit to rest. In fact, it could be better for your physical health to leave your bed unmade during the day, experts say.
What allows you to be extra lazy? Dust mites (尘螨). These little creatures live on our dead skin and produce allergens that you could breathe in while you are sleeping. And about 1.5 million dust mites are spending every night with you right now. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to get rid of them: Don’t make your bed in the morning.
Researchers at Kingston University have found that dust mites live well in warm and humid (潮湿的) environments but die in dry conditions, the BBC reports. Making your bed every morning produces a good place for these little creatures, but keeping your bed sheets open kills them off. Sometimes it pays to be a little lazy.
“Something as easy as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove humidity from the bed sheets and mattress. If dust mites won’t be able to get enough water, they’ll finally die,” Dr Stephen Pretlove told the BBC.
Fewer dust mites means fewer health problems, too. However, not all experts agree; according to some, most homes are wet enough for dust mites to live on, no matter what we do. “I find it hard to believe that just not making your bed would have any effect on solving the problem,” Professor Andrew Wardlaw from Britain said.
【1】What do experts suggest us doing in Paragraph 1?
A.Following our mothers’ advice. B.Enjoying good physical health.
C.Keeping away from bad habits. D.Leaving our bed unmade in the morning.
【2】How can we kill dust mites of our beds according to Dr Stephen?
A.By keeping our beds dry. B.By cleaning up our rooms.
C.By warming up our rooms. D.By giving dust mites enough water.
【3】What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Not making the bed can make us lazier.
B.It’s easy to keep dust mites away from our home.
C.Dust mites have nothing to do with health problems.
D.Some experts have different ideas about making the bed.
【4】In which part of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Sports. B.Advertisement.
