Most 15-year-olds are worrying about their math homework and trying to fit in with other kids their age. But Henry Patterson is busy running a successful online business instead.
Patterson, a teenager from Bedfordshire, a county in the East of England, started a business called Not Before Tea when he was just nine. He began by selling sweets, but soon turned to household products like wash bags and soft toys. The items he sells feature characters from a book he wrote called The Adventures of Sherb and Pip.
Patterson’s early school years were difficult, as he saw the world differently. He was rarely invited to parties or play dates(约会). He also had a stammer(口吃), which made him feel even more lonely.
But these things didn’t hold him back. To cheer himself up, Patterson gradually lost himself in designing different animals and writing interesting stories about them. His characters started to become popular. He tried very hard to express himself clearly and talk to bigger audiences. His business has earned him 65,000 pounds (566,221 yuan) and he has spoken at the National
Retail Business Awards for Teenagers.
On top of this, he does his best to keep his schoolwork as a priority(优先项). He takes his homework with him to events and does it on the train or after a presentation.
Two years ago, he wrote a book called Young and Mighty. It describes his search for success and happiness. “The real point of the book is to help people my age think about how to make their way in the world,” he wrote.

Enjoy reading and appreciate life meaning. You must have always known reading is of importance and just think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.
Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have all adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.
Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Peterson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.
BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual (虚 拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.

Have you ever been on an airplane, minding your own business, and found your eyes filled with tears for no reason? Or perhaps you sat near someone who burst into tears. Is there something happening to your body that triggers(引发) the tears?
There sure is! When you’re inside a flying airplane, you’re miles off the ground. Not exactly a place where humans usually find themselves. The airplane is pressurized(加压) to keep passengers comfortable. But it’s still not the pressure levels that you’ll experience at ground level. It’s a bit like having climbed a pretty high mountain.
The primary tear-trigger is the lower amount of oxygen in your blood. The oxygen levels in the plane are lower than you’ll find on the ground. And it can bring you bad feelings.
Another cause is dehydration. Because the air in the plane is very dry, we may get dehydrated. And being dehydrated can have all kinds of harmful effects on your 30,000-foot-high body, which is making you have bad feelings like sadness and worry.
In fact, there is a spiritual reason, too! Even if you’re not afraid of planes, it’s a high-stress situation. Taking a flight often involves saying goodbye to someone in the place you’re leaving. You can also be worried about plane crash or losing your baggage.
You can drink plenty of water before your flight to fight back your tears. You can also keep your mind busy with a puzzle or brain game. And if you’re going to watch a movie, maybe choose one that’s a bit more relaxing. In short, make flying a more pleasant and less stressful experience.
【1】In Paragraph 1 the author started with questions in order to .
A.lead to the topic of the text
B.give background information
C.ask why some people feel bad on the plane
D.show the do’s and don’ts on the plane
【2】What triggers tears when you’re on an airplane?
A.The weather. B.Your health.
C.The altitude. D.The temperature.
【3】What does the underlined word “dehydration” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Catching a disease.
B.Drinking too much water.
C.Sleeping too much in the daytime.
D.Losing too much water from one’s body.
【4】In the last paragraph, the author mainly tells us .
A.suggestions on how to take a safe flight
B.tips on how to hold back tears while flying
C.advice on how to get over fears when flying
D.ways of making yourself comfortable while flying

As people around me know, I love science very much. Some people don’t quite understand why and they find it strange that some people love science so much. 【1】Schoolchildren are not encouraged to think about and explore the natural world, and many children don’t love science because they are given boring homework.
There is a part of science that isn’t often provided at school. It is to get schoolchildren to think why something works in a certain way. 【2】
What science means to me is not only explaining why things work in a certain way or providing answers for rather simple things, but also it allows my mind to wander(漫游), which helps me a lot. 【3】It is as if a flood of images about all sorts of possibilities comes into my mind and I finally choose the right one. Sometimes, when I have truly understood something, the hair on the back of my neck stands up.
I often educate myself on many matters of science, and the beauty of it is that I understand how so much of it all works. 【4】I am able to really understand the explanation behind things, as well.
【5】There are so many opportunities, so many things unknown, and I want to be a part of it all. It is what makes me happy. To understand it all, to look at something and know how it works in detail and to get a better picture of the workings of the world—it is truly exciting.
A.Interest is the best teacher.
B.For me, science is how I understand the world.
C.I do not only remember the existing knowledge.
D.I think that a large part of it comes with how science is taught at school.
E.If students do this often, they may become interested in science step by step.
F.It is quite difficult for us to imagine what the world will be like in the future.
G.One of the greatest benefits is when I learn about a complex theory and understand it.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写下一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in New Hampshire, a small town in South Canada. At that time, a week-long fair(展销会) was held in the town every autumn. Thousands of people from other towns came to sell and buy things. It was the busiest time of the year.
When fairtime came, my grandma became the most useful and busiest person of the family. Grandma was a kind, well-educated old lady. She was good at cooking. All her relatives liked the food she cooked. During fairtime, they would come to live in her house and have meals there. Grandma was always happy to look after them.
Year after year, many people moved to big cities. There was no longer fairtime. Grandma became very old and was gradually going blind. My parents and I moved to live with Grandma in her house. We did our best to make her day-to-day life as comfortable as possible. I was at high school then. What I often did at home was to help Grandma with the daily newspapers. However, she didn’t look happy. She often sat in her room for hours, without saying a word.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 100 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To attract people to move back, the Town Hall decided to open the Fair again.
