If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading? Some people read very quickly, while others read very slowly. But which one is better?
The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down enough to read directions carefully. He may
read so quickly that he does not take time to understand fully the ideas and information which are important to remember.
The slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may spend too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.
So, you see, either a quick reader or a slow reader is not really a good one. If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about the speed of reading.
①Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.
②Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, science and history books, and math problems. You must read such things slowly or remember each important step and understand each important idea.
③Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and bits of news from hometown papers.
④In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas.
【1】What should be read quickly according to the passage?
A.Directions for making something. B.Math problems.
C.Science and history books. D.Storybooks, newspapers, personal letters, etc.
【2】What is the important thing you should keep in mind about speed of reading?
A.To read as fast as you can. B.To fit your reading speed to your needs.
C.To read as slowly as possible. D.To keep your reading at a certain speed.
【3】This passage is most probably from a .
A.newspaper B.story-book C.dictionary D.textbook
【4】Which title best gives the main idea of the passage?
A.What Books to Choose? B.How to Be a Rapid Reader?

The Songkran Festival is traditional Thai New Year’s Day and is celebrated from April 13 to April 15. It is also called the “Water Festival” because people believe that water will wash away bad luck. Also, this festival is for rain because it is held in the hottest season.
In the past, on this day, people threw small drops of water on monks ( 僧 人 ) and old people to bless them. Nowadays, besides the old tradition, people also throw water on whoever walks past their houses or walks down the street. Everyone gets wet, but it is all in a spirit of friendliness, blessing and fun—even among people who usually have great disagreements. People who get wet actually do not get angry because they know that it is a tradition.
On this day, everywhere in Thailand, people celebrate and enjoy the festival. People will carrywater to the temples to soak the stone figures (石像), using brushes. They also give very good food to the monks. Chiang Mai Province, which is in the northern part of Thailand, is especially lively, and animals and birds are often set free from their cages.
Volunteers can stay in Bangkok( 曼 谷 ) for the celebrations or travel to smaller communities totake part in local activities. What’s more, people can enjoy public events, such as beauty contests and marching bands during this festival which ends on April 15. Jordan Romero, a 13-year-old American boy became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma on Saturday.
The eighth grader with long curly hair from California said that he first came up with the idea to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents(大洲) four years ago.

The former record for climbers to climb Mount Qomolangma had been held by Temba Tsheri ofNapal(尼泊尔) who reached the peak at the age of 16.
Jordan’s climbing team reached the top hours earlier than expected. After they reached, they all hugged each other, saying, “I love you. I can’t believe we’re finally here.” and started crying.
Jordan, from Big Bear, California, was climbing Qomolangma with his father, his father’s friend and three guides. He left for the peak from the base camp on the Chinese side.
Unlike neighboring Nepal, the other way to Qomolangma, China has no age limit for climbers.
On the top, Jordan left behind his lucky rabbit’s foot and planted some seeds for good luck on his journey. Then he took the satellite phone and called his mom on the top of the world’s highest mountain, 29,035 feet(8,850 meters)above sea level.

A.Do some exercise.
B.Raise up your phone.
C.Buy a good phone.
D.Try to use your phone less.
E.Take a regular rest.
F. Don’t sleep in uncomfortable position.
Doctors say these tips will help people prevent trouble in the text neck.
【1】Doctors encourage users to lift their phones to eye level rather than staring down at a screen. That way there’s no added pressure from bending the neck downwards. Besides, users can look down at their phones with their eyes rather than bending their necks.

【2】If the previous step is too awkward (笨拙的),simply don’t use your smartphone as much. Many of the tasks performed on a smartphone can also be done on desktop-based apps.
【3】For those who spend long periods of time on their phones, it’s important to take breaks. Take a five-minute pause for every 15 minutes of smartphone use, and this one goes for tablet and laptops users too. If you’re sitting, get up, walk around and if possible, look at the scenery in distance.
【4】There are simple stretching exercises that can make muscles and tendons( 肌腱) happy again after a long texting session. One is to turn the head as far as possible to the left, then back to neutral, and then all the way to the right. Next, tilt (倾斜) the head ear-to-shoulder to one side, then return to upright, and then tilt to the other side.
【5】People aren’t supposed to fall asleep when they travel on airplanes and cars. When they do, the head often falls off the center of the neck, which can promote imbalance. Also, when in bed, it’s important to avoid sleeping on the stomach.
