Shanghai Begins 5G Trials
Look at the top of your phone. You’ll probably see a 3G or 4G symbol. The G stands for the generation of your mobile network. Now, the age of 5G is coming.
On March 30, Shanghai vice-mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X smart phone. CGTN reported Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks.
5G is about 100 times faster than 4G. It will bring faster mobile Internet, but people can also use it for many other things, such as self-driving cars. There is a big area of discussion about self-driving cars, which we’ve all seen a lot of news about, but we haven’t seen a lot of real cars driving themselves on the streets because it is not safe enough. However, 5G is so much faster, it could allow cars to talk to each other in time, so they can know clearly when other cars are switching lanes, going off the road, passing another car, going too fast and so on. This will help avoid accidents. So probably there will be more self-driving cars in the near future with the help of 5G.
【1】_______ has become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks.
A.Beijing B.Shanghai C.Chongqing D.Shenzhen
【2】5G is about ______ faster than 4G.
A.100 times B.30 times C.5 times D.4 times
【3】According to the passage, 5G could probably improve the ________ of self-driving cars.
A.shape B.speed C.color D.safety

A group of boys gathered around a tree, and then a story happens like this.
“What a tall tree!” They said to each other. “It would be exciting to climb to the top.” Then the group of boys decided to play a game to see who could climb to the top of the tree first. Their mothers were sitting not far away, looking on at their children as they played.
One of the climbers was an 8-year-old boy named David. He was the shortest child in the group. Nobody thought he would win the competition. Then the game started. All of the boys tried their best to climb as high as they could. Although they all made it halfway up the tree before David did, David reached the top of the tree fastest in the end.
His mother was proud to see this. She asked him, “David, how did you manage to reach the top of the tree so quickly?” “It was easy.” David said, “The other children kept looking down as they climbed. When they realized how high they were, they got scared and were afraid of falling down. I, however, looked only up. When I saw how close I was. I kept going higher and higher until I reached the top.”
It is true in life that if we just keep going forward without looking back, we are more likely to reach our goals.

“Keep calm and carry on” — You can see this message written on many T-shirts and other tourist souvenirs (纪念品) in London and the UK. It has become so famous that there are many versions (版本) of it: “keep calm and drink tea”; “keep calm and love dogs”; “keep calm and learn English”. As you can see, you can substitute (替换) the “carry on” part for anything you want, really!
But where does the original phrase come from? Well, it comes from World War Ⅱ. It was a message to calm people down and encourage them during the war when London was being attacked. The idea was to carry on with life as normal, as if there was no war.
Staying calm when you’re in trouble is known as a very British thing to do. British people are famous for keeping a “stiff upper lip”. This means your lips (嘴唇) don’t shake when you are excited or frightened: you stay calm and don’t show people how you are really feeling.
Are British people still like this today? Do they still keep a “stiff upper lip”? Modern Britain is very different from how it was 60 years ago and British people probably show their feelings more than they used to. But if “keep calm and carry on” is still so famous today, then it must be something that British people still think and care about, and something they are still famous for. So next time you are frightened or in danger, just keep calm and carry on!
【1】Where is the original phrase “Keep calm and carry on” from?
A.A tea house in UK.
B.T-shirt and tourist souvenirs.
C.World War Ⅱ.
D.Modern Britain.
【2】According to Para. 1, what message will possibly be given to Grade 9 students who’re facing important exams?
A.Keep calm and work hard.
B.Keep calm and love dogs.
C.Stop crying and eat more.
D.Drink tea and learn English.
【3】What does the underlined phrase in Para. 3 probably mean?
A.唇亡齿寒 B.唇枪舌战 C.泰然自若 D.装腔作势
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A.Britain’s Most Famous Slogan
B.UK — A Great Country
C.The Culture Development in UK
D.The Changes of the British People

We are all encouraged to work hard and succeed in life. _________ Perhaps you are afraid of failure, or even think it’s shameful to fail. If you visit the Museum of Failure in Shanghai, you might change your mind. Samuel West, a Swedish psychologist (心理学家), set up the museum. The museum shows more than 100 failed products. Some of them were made by the most famous and successful companies in the world.
For example, in 1993, Apple made the Newton Message pad (掌上电脑) which could be used to take electronic notes by hand. But it couldn’t recognize (识别) handwriting very well. Apple stopped making it in 1997. Coca-Cola once developed a coffee-flavored soda (苏打水) in 2006. The company wanted to catch up with people’s growing love for coffee, but the product was taken off the market in 2008.
West said the failed products are not shown to make fun of these companies. He thinks success stories are all similar. He is tired of reading and hearing the same boring stories. As German-American physicist Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”
This idea has been welcomed by many big companies. Silicon Valley, for example, is home to some of the world’s most innovate (创新的) tech companies. A common slogan (口号) there is “Fail fast, fail often.”
There are reasons for this. “The best companies are those that encourage failure, embrace (拥抱) out-of-the-box thinking and allow their staff to make mistakes and see what happens.” Simon Casuto wrote for Forbes.
It seems that failure isn’t always a bad thing. The key is whether or not you can learn from your mistakes.
【1】Which of the following sentences can be put in the __________?
A.And the secret to success is working hard and believing in yourselves.
B.And it is important to learn how to be successful in life.
C.But success is not important at all for those excellent companies.
D.But failure is still a common part of everyone’s life.
【2】Samuel West set up the Museum of Failure _________.
A.to catch up with people’s growing love for coffee
B.to make fun of these companies
C.to stop people making the similar mistakes
D.to tell people failure might be something good
【3】The writer tried to support his idea mainly by _________.
A.listing examples
B.imagining stories
C.making comparisons
D.listing numbers
【4】What does the underlined sentences “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” mean according to the passage?
A.It means it’s not necessary to try anything new.
B.It means there are some people who never make mistakes.
C.It means once you make mistakes often, you can surely create new things.
D.It means making mistakes is common when trying new things.

As we age, our ability to think and remember starts to become worse. But not everyone. Some of us are super-agers, who are over the age of 80 and have the brain of much younger people.
Scientists know that parts of the brain become smaller in size with age. But in super-agers that goes much slower. In her recent study, Emily Rogalski, a neuroscientist (神经科学家), showed that super-agers have young brains. The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thicker in super-agers. “When we look at a super-ager’s brain, we see that it looks more like a 50-year-old brain than an 80-year-old one.”
Scientists say super-agers have several things in common, including an active lifestyle. Many travel and play sports. They are often big readers. And they usually have healthy relationships and spend time with friends. “Growing old,” she adds, “does not have to be depressing and sad. Perhaps, if we expect a little better from ourselves, we will understand that not all aging makes us doom and gloom (愁闷).” Rogalski jokingly said that super-agers do not grow on trees — meaning they are special and few. She says she wants to find out why a super-ager’s mind is working so well and not aging as quickly as most.
The science behind super-aging is a new, but growing field. Scientists in the research offer this advice as we age: Stay active. Learn new things. Challenge yourself. Develop healthy relationships.
【1】In Emily Rogalski's recent study, what does she find?
A.When people get older, the ability to think and remember starts to become worse.
B.Super-agers have nothing in common with each other.

D.The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thinner in super-agers.
【2】Where will you probably read this article?
A.In a math book.
B.In a love story.
C.In a health research report.
D.In a sports magazine.
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Scientists haven’t found out all the secrets to super-aging.
B.Super-agers have several things in common, including an active lifestyle.
C.If people feel sad more often, they probably will live longer.
D.If a person lives longer than 100 years old, he will be very wise.

First, a company called Lava Mae came up with the idea of mobile showers (移动淋器) for the homeless. Now, two young Australian men have created a similar laundry service (洗衣服务), called Orange Sky, for the homeless.
Lucas and Nicholas have been volunteering at the city’s charities for several years. They came up with the idea in July, 2017. They noticed that when the organizations handed out free clothes, many homeless people took more than they needed and threw them over the next few weeks.
Then they realized that it was simply because the clothes were dirty. Though there are two places in the city that provide a free washing service, one is open only three days a week, while the other is always booked up. On the other hand, most homeless people don’t have any money to wash their clothes at a laundry. So a mobile laundry seemed to be the perfect idea.
Setting it all up was not easy. The first challenge they faced was figuring out how to fit two washing machines into the old van (厢式送货车) they bought for their mobile laundry. Their bigger challenge was getting the city to consider them as a charity. Finally, by October 2017, Orange Sky Laundry was open!
Now they offer their services at six locations. In the last four months, Lucas and Nicholas have not only been able to help homeless people, but also attracted 120 volunteers. With their support, the young men hope to set up similar services in fifteen Australian cities by the end of 2018.
Why did they choose the name, “Orange Sky”? Because orange is their favorite color and also the title of their favorite song.
