Yesterday afternoon I was in my studio working. I was chatting on the phone when something made me look up. Out of the window, on the other side of the street, I saw my very elderly neighbor kneeling in the grass, his caregiver beside him. "I've got to so." I said to my friend. "I think something is wrong." So I ran downstairs, out my front door and across the street.
"He was taking a walk, and he tripped on the pavement," the caregiver said. "I can't lift him on my own." My neighbor is a large man, so I ran back across the street and got my husband! Together we were able to get him standing, but he couldn't walk. Luckily, a woman bicycled by and asked if we needed help! She got a lawn chair from my front porch and we got my neighbor seated. After a few minutes of rest, we were able to help him get into the house. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't rushed over to help. I was all alone," his caregiver said.
So here's what I've been thinking about since: help your neighbor. Look up from what you are doing, and look around for who you can help. It may not be as clear as it was in this case, but there's always help you can give—to your neighbor across the street, or the person standing beside you. They are all your neighbors.

C.To work with others to do good things. D.To share one of her unforgettable experiences.

While a four-sided fence that separates a pool from the house and backyard may not seem "pretty" child drownings are far uglier. Levi Hughes died at a home with three-sided fencing, which may have protected neighboring kids from entering the pool area but still allowed a child to slip out a back door and into the water. “I have to live the rest of my life with the guilt that I could have prevented him from dying,” says Nicole Hughes. “But this isn’t about our regret and heartache. Drowning doesn’t happen to the parents; it happens to the child. Levi will never trick-or-treat again and will never turn 4 years old.”
So fix a fence at least 4 feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have openings or protrusions that a young child can use to get over, under, or through it. Make sure that the gate leading to your pool is self-losing and self-opening, and that it opens out. Latches should be above a child’s reach, and the space between the bottom of the fence and the ground should be less than 4 inches.
If possible, keep the pool covered when it’s not in use. Cover your pool with a safety cover whenever you’re not using it, even during the swimming season. With an above-ground pool, move ladders and steps away when they’re not in use. Make sure the cover fits safely over the pool’s entire surface. Otherwise, a child may get under it and run into danger.
If you have a home swimming pool, ask your pool service workers to update your drains and other systems. Your pool should also have at least two drains for each pump, which will reduce the powerful attraction if one drain is obstructed.
【1】Why did the author mention a little child in the first paragraph?
A.To show the danger of a pool. B.To tell a sad story
C.To attract the owner of the pool D.To describe his bad behavior.
【2】Which part of the fence does the author talk about in paragraph 2?
A.Its requirements. B.Its roles C.Its quality. D.Its length
【3】What's the purpose of the methods listed in paragraph 3?
A.To protect a pool B.To decorate a pool.
C.To make a pool useful D.To keep a child off a pool.
【4】Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “obstructed”?
A.Rebuilt. B.Changed. C.Stopped D.Repaired

American billionaire Elon Musk has showed a technology designed to use a computer chip inside the head to control the brain. During a video show on Friday, Musk provided details about the system, called Neuralink.
Musk says he hopes the technology can be used to treat nervous disorders and help the disabled, especially those with spinal injuries, regain body movement. Musk also believes the system can be used in the future to improve intelligence to help humans keep up with supercomputers and artificial intelligence technology.
During the show, Musk showed off a model of the Neuralink device. It is about 23 millimeters wide. It is designed to be placed into a person's head. Small wires will connect the device directly to the brain.
The Neuralink system is currently being tested in pigs, with plans to seek government approval for human testing sometime in the future.
A pig named Gertrude was also shown during the show. Musk explained that Gertrude had a Neuralink fixed inside its head. The device is meant to record nerve activity in the pig's nose and mouth. Musk said the company had three pigs, each with two chips. He described the animals as “healthy, happy and impossible to be told apart from a normal pig.” Musk said the company was able to forecast with “high accuracy" a pig's leg movement on a running machine using data from the chip.
Musk noted that Neuralink first wants to use the device on people with severe spinal cord injuries to help them talk and move using their brain waves. He said he was hopeful that, in the long term, those people could regain “full-body motion”.
Some neuroscientists said the show suggested Neuralink had made great progress with the technology. However, they warned that many more studies would be needed to test the long-term success of such devices.
【1】What good can the Neuralink device do to the disabled?
A.Making them think clearly. B.Treating their diseases successfully.
C.Having them keep up with supercomputers. D.Helping them to move again.
【2】Which can best describe the pigs with a Neuralink inside their heads?
A.Normal B.Active. C.Nervous. D.Intelligent.
【3】What do some neuroscientists think of Neuralink?
A.It has been a great success. B.It will succeed very soon.
C.It has a long way to go D.It needs support from new theories.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.There Will Be Great Progress in Brain Science
B.Musk Shows Technology Linking Computer to Brain
C.Three Pigs Are Being Tested Instead of Human Beings
D.The Disabled Will Receive Better Treatment in the Future

Try This Activity for English Speaking Practice
Some speaking activities do not give an exact picture of your true language skills. But storytelling does.【1】It can be a short piece of invented story, or it can be the retelling of a news event. Or you can talk about something that happened in your own life. Storytelling frees your mind from forming complex ideas which lets you speak more easily in English. On the other hand, an activity requiring your opinion can slow you down.【2】
For the storytelling activity, try to provide as much information as possible and aim for a recording of three minutes or fewer. Don't just say, "I studied at the library." Say, "【3】And most of the seats were taken, so looked around and I finally found a place, but it was near the window. It was chilly, so I had to keep my coat on." Or something like that.
【4】Instead, it is to speak at a faster speed because you do not have to stop and think of each idea separately. Before the activity, you'd better speak out loud to yourself a few times to make sure you have you main points in mind.
When listening to the recording, do not expect to find all or even most grammar or vocabulary mistakes. 【5】After the first recording, record yourself telling the same story at least once more and take note of your progress. But avoid memorizing your speech.
A.Storytelling is the retelling of a story
B.Put your speech into written or typed form.
C.The goal in giving such information is not to fill the time.
D.I walked into the library and I thought about where I should sit
E.That is because it forces you to think about your ideas as you say them
F.Choose a place that you know well, like your home or a nearby bus or train station.
G.But you can easily find some mistakes, such as wrong verb endings and noun endings.

When we arrived, many relatives or friends came to see us off. Shaking hands and having small talk with us, they warmly welcome us. But to my surprised, none of them wore a mask! It made them appear funny. But at the same time, it showed that the epidemic situation in China was well under control.
However, masks can not only be used to fight the epidemic, but they can also be used to prevent the spreads of the flu. So we still need to wear them in the coming winter.
