My father and several volunteers from the church gathered every day in the park to feed the hungry. I really didn’t understand why my father bothered to do it.
One Saturday I couldn’t wait for him to leave. However, it didn’t take long for my plans to change and my happiness to dissolve.
“I’m going to need your help today. Some of the others that usually help me won’t be able to make it.”
“Dad, I can’t today,” I complained. “I have plans, television, friends, shopping, and I was maybe going to go to the pool.”
I murmured, “It’s not like I have a life.” My voice was so low that he didn’t hear what I said.
This was going to be the worst day ever. My dad always drove the church van, which also contained clothes and small bags filled with personal items such as combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
When we arrived at the park, people were already gathered under a tree waiting for us. I couldn’t believe how many people were there, and all of them were homeless. I was surprised to learn my dad knew most of them by name. He also seemed to know what each one needed and what they had suffered to land them on the street. One old man called Adonis told me if it hadn’t been for my father he didn’t think he would have found Jesus.
When everyone was gone, we loaded things back into the van. Now I understood why my father did so much to help the homeless. I could tell he loved seeing their smiles of happiness. I did too.
That day with my dad taught me that there will always be someone smarter, prettier, or richer than me, and there will also always be someone less fortunate. The difference is in the individual willing to take the opportunity to help others, even if it means sacrificing something of their own.

Do you remember your very first day at school? For most of us, it was so exciting to meet a teacher for the first time. It was great fun to have new classmates and a real desk to sit at.
For children this year, it’ll still feel thrilling for the students to be in a new environment. However, the students should wear a special uniform. It might also be a little scary to be sitting at a desk surrounded by strange plastic screens as a six-year-old.
There are two Florida teachers who have figured out a way to make those plastic dividers — installed on desks to keep a safe distance during the age of COVID-19 — less nerve-wracking, and more totally, joyfully brilliant.
First-grade teachers Patricia Dovi and Kim Martin, of St. Barnabas Episcopal School in DeLand, Florida have turned coronavirus dividers into the windshields and windows of, yes, Jeeps.
“Anything that we can do to add some silliness and some creativity to get them excited is going to be really important in the longevity of this school year,” Dovi told Insider.
The school supplied the plexiglass; Dovi and Martin paid for the decorations out of their own pockets. Martin estimates that the desks took about a week to complete. Wasn’t all that work worth it? Family and friends of these two inspiring teachers helped turn the desks into colorful Jeeps with personalized license plates.
Each student arrived just yesterday, to find their very own “car” waiting for them. “We cannot praise him too much, saying ‘Hey, purple Jeep, you’re getting out of your lane,” Martin joked. “I think it will be a smart way to keep the kids engaged. We have no doubt about that.”
【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Things are a little different. B.School uniforms are a must.
C.Students hate sitting at the desk. D.All the old desks are replaced.
【2】Why did Dovi and Martin turn desks into jeeps for their 1st grade students?
A.To make the naughty boys quiet. B.To make social distancing fun.
C.To draw their attention. D.To let them love learning.
【3】Where did Dovi and Martin get money to decorate their desks?
A.From the school. B.From the fund-raiser.
C.From their family and friends. D.From themselves.
【4】Which word can best describe the students’ attitude to their very own “car”?
A.Skeptical. B.Ridiculous.
C.Favorable. D.Conservative.

Roboticists at the University of California San Diego have developed an affordable, easy to use system to track the location of flexible surgical robots inside the human body. The system performs as well as current state of the art methods, but the whole system, including the robot, magnets and magnet localization setup, costs around $100. Many current methods also require exposure to radiation, while this system does not.
The system was developed by Tania Morimoto, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, and mechanical engineering Ph. D. student Connor Watson.
“Continuum medical robots work really well in highly constrained (受限的) environments inside the body,” Morimoto said. “But it becomes a lot harder to track their location and their shape inside the body.” The researchers used existing magnet localization methods, which work very much like GPS, to develop a computer model that predicts the robot’s location.
GPS satellites ping (发送) smartphones and based on how long it takes for the signal to arrive, the GPS receiver in the smartphone can determine where the cell phone is. Similarly, researchers know how strong the magnetic field should be around the magnet placed in the robot. They rely on four sensors that are carefully spaced around the area where the robot operates to measure the magnetic field strength. Based on how strong the field is, they are able to determine where the tip of the robot is.
Morimoto and Watson went a step further. They then trained a neural network to learn the difference between what the sensors were reading and what the model said the sensors should be reading. As a result, they improved localization accuracy to track the tip of the robot. “Ideally we are hoping that our localization tools can help improve these kinds of growing robot technologies. We do want to push this research forward so that we can test our system in a clinical setting and eventually translate it into clinical use,” Morimoto said.
【1】What be learnt about the system according to the text?
A.It’s complex. B.It’s low-cost.
C.It’s delicate. D.It’s radioactive.
【2】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The system’s working principle.
B.The function of GPS satellites.
C.The reason for inventing the system,
D.The necessity of inventing the system.
【3】What do Morimoto and Watson expect of the system?
A.It’ll be environmentally-friendly. B.It’ll be sold on the Internet soon,
C.I’ll be easy for us to operate. D.It’ll be tested with real patients.
【4】Where is this text most likely from?
A.A diary. B.A guidebook.
C.A magazine. D.A novel.

“Thanks again, Anna,” Peter Smith said, “You did a great job.”
“You’re welcome.” Anna Johnson could hardly keep the excitement from her voice. Her first baby-sitting job had gone perfectly. She’d played games with Peter’s three children until it was bedtime. Mr. Smith walked her to the front door and waited while she let herself into the house. Anna hadn’t even looked at the money Mrs. Smith had pressed into her hand at the end of the evening. She’d expected five or six dollars. Now, she saw that it was a twenty-dollar bill!
Anna imagined her parents’ faces when she handed them the twenty dollars.
Things hadn’t been easy for the Johnson family since Anna’s dad had lost his engineering job a year ago. There had been no new clothes or movies in the last year. They no longer went out to eat on Fridays. Anna didn’t really mind, as long as her family was together. But now she could help. Twenty dollars! That was enough to fill the car with gas or to buy a bag of groceries.
Her excitement faded as she wondered if Mrs. Smith realized how much money she had given her. Could she have made a mistake? Anna felt bad as she remembered that Mrs. Smith had simply pulled the money from her purse without looking at it.
Anna thought, “Maybe Mrs. Smith meant to give me the twenty-dollar bill, Baby-sitting three children is a lot of work.” Soon Anna remembered that the Smiths didn’t seem to have much money, either. But, she silently argued with herself. “They gave me the money. I didn’t steal it.”
She found her parents in the living room. Anna took a deep breath and told them what had happened. “I wanted to give the money to you to help out the family, but I think Mrs. Smith made a mistake.” She continued. “I’m going to give it back to her.”
Dad settled his big hand on her shoulder. “You just gave us the best gift, Anna.” Mom kissed her. “We’re very proud of you, sweetheart.”
