THE KIDBRIDGE TOLERANCE MUSEUM
Volunteer Opportunity(机会) for College Students
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

Our volunteer college students work with small groups of young people to guide them through activities and discussions. Students from different majors(专业) can learn a lot from our program, especially teacher major. Working with small groups is an excellent way to develop as a new teacher. Many of our visitors have Spanish as a first language, so bilingual(双语的) teachers are wanted.
TRAINING
No experience is necessary! Have fun working with the young. New volunteers receive training and work with experienced teachers.
TIME COMMITMENT
Field trips take place between 9:30 am and 1:30 pm during the week. Volunteers may work 9:30 am to 11:30 am or 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm, or 9:30 am to 1:30 pm if you like. Volunteers generally attend as often or as little as they prefer.
OTHER WAYS TO VOLUNTEER
Kidsbridge also provides opportunities for students with
specific interests to do research and learn more. Internship (实习生) opportunities are available. Volunteering in the Museum also counts as Community Service hours.
College students’ reflections after visiting the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum:
“It is an experience that can’t be compared to other college classes. I’ve found that sharing time with the kids was not only beneficial to them but a huge benefit to me.”
“Now I know why I want to be a teacher --these children need the best teachers. I learned that you never know what a student is going through, and you may not have the answers. However, if you are the person who that child looks to as different, as a safe place from all of the madness in their lives, then you have opened the door. You can make a world of difference.”

Your house may have an effect on your shape of your body. Experts say the way you design(设计) your home could play a role in whether you put on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to change your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains(窗帘) and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less awkward when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn't have enough window light, get more lights and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors make us eat more. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed(消化) 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it's time to repaint, go blue.
Don't forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly seem to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin paying attention to the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you're at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄取量) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid(液体) into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
【1】The passage is especially helpful for those who care about _______.
A.house buying B.their body shape

A.take in food better B.burn more calories

【4】People are advised to _______ at mealtimes.

C.use smaller spoons D.turn down the lights
【5】The best title for the passage is _______.
A.Ways of Serving Dinner B.Is Your House Making You Fat?.

It is believed that social networks allow people to make their online social circle larger. But having 150 friends on WeChat is not the same thing as having 150 friends in real life.
In last week's Chitchat, we asked our readers how many "friends" did they have in their We Chat account(账户), and how many of them were "actual friends". Here are some of the top comments(评论).
@left and right
I have more than 1,000 friends in WeChat. However, the number of "friends" I communicate with daily is less than 50, most of whom are my classmates and families. So many friends are just there and we never speak any word.
@Kris Wilson Choy
I have almost 300 friends in my WeChat. However, people who I often send messages to is just 10. Most of these friends are classmates or people who work with me. Except work or studying, we hardly talk with each other during our spare time.
@Monica
To be honest, as an English teacher since 1981, I have more than 400 WeChat friends, most of whom are my students, students' parents, and workmates. Although we seldom meet face to face, our ties still remain normal. You see, they often ask me questions online, which I answer happily. Of course, sometimes I feel upset when they ask me to vote (投票) online or give likes. However, I generally do as requested, because it serves to glue our ties.
