Should Schoolchildren Have Jobs?
When you were in school, the last thing you probably wanted to do was spend your weekends going to work. There was homework to do, sports to play and fun to have. But our parents probably persuaded us to find a job to earn some money and get some life experience. When I was a teenager I had a paper round. I then progressed to a Saturday job in a supermarket.
Today in the UK children are allowed to take part-time jobs from the age of 13. It’s one of those things that is seen almost as a rite of passage(成人仪式). It’s a taste of independence. Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing your money.
Some research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday jab could be harmful to a person later on. According to a 2017 study in the UK, employers’ organizations believed that not participating in part-time work at school age caused young adults to be ill-prepared for full-time employment. But despite this, recent numbers have shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years.
So, does this mean that British teenagers are now more afraid of hard work? Probably not. Some experts think that young people feel going out to work will affect their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results—and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that “Properly controlled part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.” In reality, it’s all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.
Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13-year-old girl, who has a Saturday job in a shop, told the BBC that “I enjoy my job because I’m earning money and it helps my confidence speaking to people and socializing with people.” Did you do a part-time job when you were at school?
【1】Employers believe if young adults don’t participate in part-time work at school age, ________.
A. they can’t work on their own
B. they can’t manage their money wisely
C. they won’t be well-prepared for the job
D. they won’t know how to work with others
【2】According to some experts, ________ has caused fewer schoolchildren to do a par-time job in the past years.
A. more time to rest B. having enough money
C. being afraid of hard work D. more pressure from school
【3】According to the passage, taking on a part-time job can help young people ________.
A. have a chance to see the world and meet more friends
B. understand their parents and grow up more quickly
C. learn skills and be confident to talk to people
D. get better grades and perform well in school

People who often eat nuts appear to live longer, according to the latest study of its kind. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested the greatest benefit was in those eating them on their daily diet.
Eating nuts was linked to a healthier lifestyle including being less likely to smoke or be overweight and more likely to exercise. The British Heart Foundation said more research was needed to prove the link, “While this is an interesting link, we need further research to make sure if it's the nuts that protect heart health, or other sides of people’s lifestyle .”
The study followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years. The more regularly people ate nuts, the less likely they were to die during the study. People eating nuts once a week were 11% less likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts. Lead researcher Dr. Charles Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “The most obvious benefit was a decrease of 29%in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a significant reduction-11%- in the danger of dying from cancer.”
They suggest nuts are lowering cholesterol(胆固醇). and insulin resistance(胰岛素抗性). Nuts contain unsaturated fat(不饱和脂肪), protein(蛋白质) and several kinds of vitamins and minerals and they can take the place of snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits.
Victoria Taylor, senior expert at the British Heart Foundation, said, “This study shows close connection between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from heart disease.” Choosing plain, unsalted foods rather than sweet, salted, or chocolate-covered will keep your salt and sugar intake down.

The European Parliament has approved a law banning a wide-range of single-use plastic items, such as straws and cotton buds by 2021. “Europe is setting new standards, paving the way(铺路) for the rest of the world,” the European Commission's vice-president Frans Timmermans, who is responsible for sustainable development, said in a statement.
The new plans come after the EC found that plastics make up more than 80% of marine litter, which has disastrous effects on wildlife and habitats. The EU parliament notes that because of its slow rate of breaking down, plastic residue(残余) has been found in marine species as well as fish and shellfish - and therefore also makes its way into the human food chain.
Under the new European law, tobacco companies will be required to cover the costs for the collection of cigarette butts. Manufacturers of fishing tools will also have to pay for the retrieval(找回) of any plastic nets that have been left at sea. There's also a new focus on further raising public awareness, where producers of items such as tobacco filters(滤嘴), plastic cups, and wet wipes will be required to clearly explain to users how to appropriately dispose of them.
The European Commission first suggested the ban in May, which was approved by member states in October. China last year banned the import of 24 varieties of solid waste, including types of plastic and unsorted paper, putting pressure on Europe to deal with its own waste.
The World Economic Forum estimates that there are about 150 million tons of plastic in the world's seas. A study published in Science in 2015 suggested that between 5 and 13 million tons more are flowing into them every year. Research shows there will be more plastic than fish by weight in the world's oceans by 2050, which has encouraged policymakers, individuals and companies into action.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was somewhere between spring and summer my mom and I were driving through the countryside Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?”I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,”she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask,“Do you know someone there?”She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?”She smiled slightly,“I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员).”“What?”She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while. ”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again,“Did you leave your name?”To this she answered instantly,“No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. ”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.
