I was born in Fiji and I know firsthand what it is like having an extremely poor background. My only “luck” was having an opportunity to go to school, and I loved it so much. Even when I was sick, I never missed a day. I often compared with my friends who lived near the school to see who could be the first to arrive. It so happened that I lived the furthest, but I always won.
I’ll never forget the days when I waited by the school gate for my mother to bring me the $5 school administration fee I needed for each school term. I watched the road for the bus and with each bus that went by without my mother getting off, my heart would sink because I didn’t want to be sent home.
Since then, I’ve never stopped believing how far $5 can go in a poor girl’s life. My parents couldn’t afford to send all my siblings (兄弟姐妹) to school. I was the youngest, so that $5 fee needed to stay in school came last to me. That $5 represented my dreams, my happiness and my future. We could never afford milk, but my mother always managed to feed us a diet that was basic and filling while saving every penny she could.
Having that $5 each term to stay in school changed my life. I’ve worked in Australia, Europe and Africa, and now I live in New York. Education has enabled me to travel around the world. But above all, education has allowed me not to be just a bystander or an observer; it has given me the opportunity, confidence and platform to be part of decision-making and a voice for social change.
【1】What enabled the author to always win the competition?
A.Her living close to school. B.Her good luck.
C.Her strong wish to stand out. D.Her extreme love for school.
【2】How did the author feel while waiting for her mother at the school gate?
A.Regretful. B.Nervous. C.Proud. D.Pleased.
【3】What do we know about the author according to paragraph 3?
A.She never went hungry in childhood.
B.She drank a lot of milk when young.
C.She enjoyed going to school with her siblings.
D.She failed to know what money means when young.
【4】Why does the author mention the countries in the last paragraph?
A.To prove she is quite interested in traveling.
B.To prove what life is like in developed countries.
C.To prove education has indeed changed her life.
D.To prove poor children can also be well educated.

Do you consider redecorating your preschoolers room? What about a new paint job? Before you start painting the wall red, you might want to take a look at some research about the psychology of color from the Paint Quality Institute.
According to Debbie Zimmer, color expert at the Paint Quality Institute, “Color psychology can help you choose paint colors that create the right mood in a room affecting not just your own feelings, but those of everyone who enters the space.” Blue, which often ranks at the top of surveys exploring “favorite” colors, has been shown to slow pulse rate and lower body temperature. So blue is a terrific color choice for bedrooms, but less so for dining rooms, according to Zimmer.
Green, also one of the most popular colors, is a little more versatile (通用的). Zimmer says, “Because it’s calming, green paint is a good color choice for bedrooms, and since it’s the color of many appetizing (开胃的) fruits and vegetables, it can work in dining rooms, too.”
Zimmer says, “Red represents energy and excitement and is associated with desire and passion, so it’s a perfect paint color for dining rooms and adult bedrooms, but wrong for children’s rooms.” “However, pink is one of the most calming colors and is a fine choice for a baby’s room.” she says.
Orange is a happy color too and it has energy and warmth about it. However, it’s clearly not the color of calm, so it’s best not to use it when painting a place where you want to relax, according to Zimmer.
Anyway, the bottom line is to choose what makes you and your little one happy. “No one will spend more time in your home than you will,” says Zimmer, “so it’s important to paint with those colors that are personal favorites. Choose colors you love and you wont go wrong!”
【1】Which room is a place that is painted properly according to color psychology?
A.An orange kid’s room. B.A green dining room.
C.A blue kitchen. D.A red kid’s bedroom.
【2】What does the underlined word “terrific” in Para. 3 mean?
A.Beautiful B.Terrible C.Special D.Wonderful
【3】What color should be avoided when a bedroom is painted?
A.Orange. B.Blue. C.Green. D.Pink.
【4】According to Zimmer, what should we consider first when we choose paint colors?
A.Our personalities. B.Our preference. C.Our purposes. D.Our daily habits.

Dogs are considered by many to be man’s best friend and with millions of dogs owned by families in the US, it is highly likely that many dogs are in need of some amount of training. Since dogs can hear sounds at much higher frequencies (频率) than humans, there is a wonderful tool for the training of a dog. It is an app (应用程序) called the Dog Whistle. This isn’t your typical whistle in that it produces sounds at a frequency that is unable to be heard by humans. This unique app will allow you to train your dog without the need of a dog whistle.
The Dog Whistle free app was created by an app developer Maoli Wang specifically for dog owners who are looking for a way to communicate with their dogs in order to be able to either train them or alert (使警觉) them when the noise around is too great for them to hear you call them. By simply fixing the app on your iPhone, it will immediately turn itself into a dog whistle.
The app includes a very powerful system that is able to create different tones ranging from 16,000 to 40,000 Hz in order for a dog to be able to hear it. The app also has an on-screen sound meter in order for the user to monitor the sound level being produced. In that way, they can decide on which frequency works best for their dog. What’s more, the app easily produces the requested tones at the frequencies necessary to be used to communicate with your dog by simply tapping the screen of your phone.
The app was designed to be used in place of a dog whistle in order to get your dogs attention when it is too noisy around them. The sound produced through the app is at a level that only dogs are able to hear and they will respond to the sound. If you own a dog and are having behavioral issues with them, you would surely benefit from the Dog Whistle free app available by clicking here.
