It was the Greek shopkeeper who taught me about the power of being kind.
In 2008, I left Spain to study alone in London. My parents had to bring up my three younger sisters and two younger brothers, so I found three part-time jobs to pay for my studies. I worked early mornings and late nights, so I was tired, really tired, all the time.
Unfortunately, I got a cold and had a very high fever. Because I had spent all my free time working since I came to London, I hardly took part in any activities and I had no friends. Besides, I was too shy to communicate with others and ask others for help. After sleeping on the sickbed for two days, I went out to get some food. Normally, I went to the supermarket, but this time I went into the Greek shop, a small corner shop, because it was closer.
I picked up some food and gave it to the shopkeeper, who asked me, “You look terrible, my boy! You are not feeling well, right?”
I said YES in a low voice.
She pointed at the salami and bread I was buying and offered, “I can make you a sandwich, so you don’t have to do it yourself.”
I nodded without saying a word.
So, she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went into the back room and came again with a bowl of hot soup.
“It will warm you up,” she said with a friendly smile.
What really warmed me up was not the soup. It was her smile that told me she cared me. Her kindness reminded me of my mother.
I had been quite shy, but from that day on, I did not let shyness prevent me from communicating with and being kind to others. Now I work in a children’s hospital in Africa. I love my work and people around me. I always bring my smile and kindness to them.

Since the beginning of history people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeastern Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles up it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(坝) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries
However, large cities and industries that are located on rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of them.
【1】Which is NOT true according to Paragraph 1 and 2?
A.Many cities are located on rivers.
B.The lifeline of India is the Nile.

C.using water for irrigating D.building dams across rivers
【4】The river wants to tell us in the last paragraph that ____.
A.people should do more to keep rivers clean B.people are learning the importance of rivers
C.cities grow in size and industries increase D.cities and industries cause problems to rivers

If you have ever had a cat, or have watched one of the many funny cat videos online, you’ll know that cats have a mind of their own. A lot of the things they do are hard to understand---they like to climb up tall furniture, fit themselves in small spaces and attack small objects for no reason at all.
According to Tony Buffington, a professor at Ohio State University in the US, cats’ strange behavior largely comes from their way of life back in the wild.
“Cats today still have many of the same instincts that allowed them to live in the wild for millions of years.” he said in a TED Talk. “To them, our homes are their jungles.”
In the wild, cats are hunters. Their bodies and great balancing abilities allow them to climb to high places to better look at the environment. Even though they don’t have to hunt anymore in human houses, they still keep the old habit of viewing the living room from, for example, the top of the refrigerator.
Cats’ hunting instinct is also what makes them attack small things like keys and USB drives. In the wild, they hunt whatever they can get, and most of the animals they kill are small.
However, cats can also be prey. This explains why they like to stay in small spaces like drawers or washing machines---they are hiding, or they think they are hiding, from more dangerous animals. This is also why cats prefer a clean box; a smelly one could easily show enemies where they are.
But knowing how cats’ minds work is not only useful for better understanding them. It may also help cats’ owners to better meet cats’ needs. For example, owners could try to make climbing easier for cats by moving their furniture around. They could also make eating feel more like hunting instead of just giving food to the cats.
【1】What do cats usually do at home according to the passage?
A.Attack big things or animals B.Climb up some tall furniture
C.Fit themselves into big spaces D.Hunt for food in the house
【2】What does the underlined word “prey” probably mean?
A.The animals that like clean places B.The animals that are dangerous
C.The animals that only eat meat D.The animals that are hunted as food
【3】To better meet cats needs, what can owners do?
A.Put them back in the wild. B.Feed them only small food.
C.Move their furniture around. D.Allow them to watch videos.
【4】What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The food that cats are more likely to eat. B.The places where cats like to hide at home.
C.The common ways cats look after themselves. D.The reasons why cats have strange behavior.

Although people around the world seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don’t all have the same coffee culture. In Europe, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while drinking coffee. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in Seattle, Washington, in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired(雇佣) Schultz as the company’s head of marketing(市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso(浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the “feel the same everywhere” environment offered by Starbucks.
【1】What is the passage mainly about?
A.What kind of coffee people like. B.What can be added to coffee.
C.How a company has grown. D.How good coffee can be made.
【2】Which is true about Starbucks’ first ten years of business?
A.It opened only three stores. B.Its head of marketing worked in New York.
C.It was run by Howard Schultz. D.Its coffee beans were from Italy.
【3】Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Starbucks closed most of its US shops.
B.Schultz opened a Starbucks shop in Italy in 1983.
C.Starbucks offer a comfortable and casual environment.
D.There are over 16,000 Starbucks in the US.
【4】Why did some Starbucks close in some places?
A.Because all of the coffee tasted the same.
B.Because the coffee in these places was too expensive.
C.Because the people had no coffee culture in these countries.
D.Because there were too many coffee shops in one place.

Learning a language can be useful in today’s global society. Do you find it difficult to learn a foreign language successfully? Here are some tips to help you out:
【1】
By far the most important is how much time you are immersed in the language. The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn. This means listening, reading, writing, speaking and studying the language. This does not mean sitting in class looking out of the window, nor listening to other students who do not speak well.
【2】
Build up your vocabulary! You’ll need lots. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Read online, using online dictionaries, and make your own vocabulary lists for review. Soon you will be able to use them.
【3】
Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player. Read what you are listening to. Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading, you will get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many hours of class time
【4】
If you do want to learn the language, try to be an active learner. Choose something that you want to listen to and read. Find out the words and phrases that you need to understand in your listening and reading. Do not wait for someone else to show you the language. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up. Talk when you feel like it. Write when you feel like it.
【5】
Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or cannot yet understand, or cannot yet say. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you cannot control. So sit back and enjoy. Just make sure you spend enough time with the language.
A.Relax and enjoy yourself!
B.Spend the time!
C.Learn a foreign language well!
D.Focus on words and phrases!
E.Listen and read every day!
F.Be active in your own learning!
