As part of the “Facebook generation”, we have grown up in an Internet world and we can connect with people with a touch on the smart phone. Nowadays, it is common to offer guests the Wi-Fi password along with a cup of tea when they come around to visit. We have lost ourselves in our smart phones.
Of course, smart phones are really useful and have changed our lives in many ways. Thanks to thousands of APPs, we can now do almost anything when we’re out and about. However, it seems that these addictive(上瘾的) pieces of technology are slowly beginning to take over our lives. It’s so easy to become dependent on the phones, whether it’s to find your way around with the map APP or even just check the time. As a result, we’re becoming more anti-social, choosing to search the Internet rather than talk face-to-face with other human beings.
Even when we’re socializing(交往), it seems most of us feel uneasy without our phones at arm’s reach. Phones were invented to keep us more connected, and indeed they have done just that. We can now get in contact, yet this means we’re starting to be short of sincere(真诚的) contact with each other. People are connecting more and more across screens rather than in person.
I’m not here to say I’m any better. However, I’m trying to use it less and less when I’m out and about. Next time you’re out with your friends, put your phone away and see how long you can last without it.
【1】Which of the following is commonly offered to guests nowadays?
A.A cup of wine. B.The Wi-Fi password.
C.A smart phone. D.A piece of newspaper.
【2】What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Smart phones have taken over our lives already.
B.We can hardly do anything without phones now.
C.Smart phones can make people more social.
D.It’s easy to lose ourselves in smart phones.
【3】Why were phones invented?
A.To keep people more connected.
B.To help people contact sincerely.
C.To help people find their way.
D.To make it easier to check the time.
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.We shouldn’t use smart phones when meeting friend.
B.Smart phones have changed our lives in many ways.
C.People today have lost themselves in smart phones.
D.The writer never uses smart phones when he’s out.

Jane has been living in China for more than two years and she has come to know some of the differences between Western and Chinese culture. Here is what she has to say about this.
“In China people often try to avoid conflicts. If somebody does something you don’t like, you may be upset (不开心), but you should hide it, keep it inside, and act like nothing is wrong. If you must do something about it, you should not talk to the person directly, but rather talk to someone else who will then talk with them. However, in the western countries, things are different. If someone does something I don’t like, I will tell them so. I may say it nicely or I may get very angry, but at least I will do something. Also, I won’t talk to other persons about it and instead I will talk to the person directly. In fact, in the western countries, if you say something bad about someone to someone else, it is thought that you have a bad character .
“A very good example of this comes from my first year of teaching in China. I knew I did not have a lot of experience in teaching and that I probably made many mistakes, so I asked them if I was doing wrong, what I should do better and so on. However, every time I asked, they said, ‘Oh, you are doing a wonderful job.’ I really expected someone to tell me something to help me to improve, but after that, people started telling me that the leader was not satisfied with my work. A few months later, I got a letter saying that my teaching was not good enough and that I would no longer be able to teach at the school. I was so surprised that I didn’t know how to handle it.”
She also told me another thing, “Every time I go out, people ask,‘Where are you going?’ I am really tired of these.” It’s time for us to pay more attention to the culture difference.
【1】The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.
A.Jane’s teaching experience in China
B.in China people often try to avoid conflicts
C.the differences between Western and Chinese culture
D.a very good example of Jane’s
【2】What is the meaning of “avoid conflicts” in Paragraph 2?
A.避免冲突 B.胆小怕事 C.背后议论 D.大声喧哗
【3】From the passage we know that ________.
A.a friendly greeting in China may be something impolite to foreigners
B.foreigners want to know about Chinese culture
C.Chinese people should not greet foreigners
D.Westerners should not talk to people directly
【4】When something wrong happens, westerners usually ________.
A.talk about it with other people
B.hide it inside and won’t talk about it
C.talk about it directly with the people
D.get very angry but do nothing

Still in shock!I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases. Earlier that evening, I received a call that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were moving from New York to Seattle. Our house was in a mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there's anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn't know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Peter. He and his wife Donna lived nearby.
“I've come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral(葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen.Peter got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to clear the dishes, Peter had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn't help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do …” Instead I try to think of something that man needs, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel(养狗场), or house-sitting(看房子) during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed help?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

A.Peter came to clean the shoes. B.The couple bathed the children.
C.They cleared the supper dishes. D.The writer found the shoes cleaned.
【3】If one of her friends has lost a loved one, what will the writer probably NOT do?
A.Call her friend to ask what she can do.
B.Look after her friend’s young children.
C.Take her friend’s dog to the boarding kennel.
D.Offer her friend house-sitting during the funeral.

A.One person’s loss is another’s gain.
B.An act of kindness is often rewarded.
