Olympic host cities are generally considered to be equipped with advanced technology and expensive facilities. Now, people can just go there for a little Olympic-level entertainment.
Athens, Greece (1896 and 2004)
Home to the first modern Olympic games in 1896, Athens' history of the Olympic tradition dates back several thousand years. Every four years, the Olympic torch is lit at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens before beginning its long journey to the new host city. Visitors can walk through the Olympic Velodrome in the Olympic Sports Complex and step back in time at the 50,000-seat stadium.
Barcelona, Spain(1992)
These days Barcelona is among the world's most visitable cities even without Olympic fame, but that isn't always the case. The telecommunications tower built for the games by Spanish architect Calatrava is also an iconic(图像的) device of the city's skyline, and its Olympics stadium- Montjuic Stadium is regularly used to host A-list musical performances like The Rolling Stones, Madonna, and Beyonce.
St Moritz, Switzerland(1924 and 1948)
Appropriately, the town that invented Alpine tourism has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, and continues to make use of its many sports facilities-if you can afford to get there. Stay at the Kulm Hotel for the easiest access to the Kulm Country Club, where guests can skate on the same lake used by mid-century Olympians, or test your courage on the Olympia Bob Run, one of the few places where you can ride a full-speed Olympic bobsled(双人雪橇) on a run constructed entirely of ice.
Sydney, Australia (2000)
The turn-of-the-century Sydney Summer Olympics were named the "Green Games" by the International Olympic Committee (10C) and were designed to introduce a more environmentally conscious way of hosting the event. The structure that best shows Sydney's efforts to be an example of continuing Olympic development is the ANZ Stadium.
【1】Where does the host city get the Olympic torch lit?

At first glance, there is nothing unusual about the BingoBox store — shelves stacked with snacks line the walls, tempting passers-by through the glass windows. But on closer inspection, BingoBox is no ordinary store. The door opens only after customers scan a QR code to enter, and there is no cashier to tally up purchases —just a lone checkout counter in a corner. The Shanghai-based company is one of many unmanned store operators opening outlets all over China, hoping to improve slim profit margins in the retail business by reducing staff costs.
“If capital costs rise quickly, that puts greater pressure on low-margin businesses like convenience stores and supermarkets,” said Andrew Song, an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities. “In China, manpower costs have been rising relatively quickly.”
However, the futuristic vision of shopping without a checkout person is still in progress. A reporter who visited a BingoBox store in Shanghai was briefly locked in when he was trying to exit without making a purchase. Although a sign near the exit stated that empty-handed customers can leave by scanning a QR code, no QR code was to be found. Repeated calls to the customer service hotline went unanswered.
Another unmanned operation in China, Take Go, only allows one customer in the shop at a time because of technology limitations in using multiple cameras for scanning customers’ faces.
The idea of unmanned stores first caught the world’s attention when the largest US online retailer announced its cashier-less store, which is only available to employees for now. Since then, some technology companies in China, including the e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, have launched their own versions of unmanned stores.
Embedded with technology such as RFID tags, mobile payment systems and facial recognition systems, such stores collect valuable data that give operators a better idea of consumers’ preference and buying habits, which can then be used to optimize the operation and make more efficient inventory decisions. For BingoBox, lower operating costs also mean it can afford to expand its reach to areas with less foot traffic, according to Chen Zilin, the founder and CEO of BingoBox.
【1】What makes the BingoBox store look like an ordinary convenience store?
A.Shelves stacked with goods. B.A lone checkout counter.
C.Fewer cashiers to tally up purchases. D.Entering by scanning a QR code.
【2】Why are unmanned stores popular with operators?
A.The customers prefer mobile payment systems.
B.The unmanned stores help improve profit with lower labor costs.
C.The employees focus on consumers’ preference and buying habits.
D.The operators care more about operations and inventory decisions.
【3】How many cases can show that the unmanned stores need improving?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
【4】What can we infer according to Chen Zilin?
A.Nowadays all stores should be equipped with advanced technology.
B.The operation collect data about consumers’ preference and buying habits.
C.BingoBox made wiser decisions based on the data collected in unmanned stores.
D.The operators can open unmanned supermarkets in more remote places with low costs.

On a clear night in 1994, an earthquake hit Los Angeles and caused a city-wide power cut just before dawn. Awake in surprise, some residents who had escaped outside called various emergency centers to report a mysterious cloud over head.
That unusual object turned out to be the hand of the Milky Way, which had long been unclear from view by the city’s lights.
Arguably, the light bulb is the most transformative invention humans have introduced to this planet. By pressing a switch or pushing a button, we can lift the veil (面纱) that would naturally cover our lives each night. Now, we work long after the sun sinks below the horizon. We play games outside far into the night. We more safely wander around city streets after dark.
But if light bulbs have a dark side, it’s that they have stolen the night. The extra light brightening our environments is endangering ecosystems by harming animals whose life cycles depend on the dark. We’re endangering ourselves by changing the biochemical rhythms that normally go out and flow with natural light levels. And in a basic sense, we’ve lost our connection to nighttime skies, on the basis of which our ancestors made up their star-related stories, timed the planting and harvesting of crops, and inferred the physical laws governing the universe.
“The disappearance of the night sky is tied up with our ever more fast-paced world,” says Amanda Gormley of the Tucson-based International Dark-Sky Association. “We lose something vital; we lose a part of ourselves when we lose access to the night sky. We lose that sense of stillness that should be right over our heads every night.”
Now, as the consequences of light pollution arise out of the shadows and into the spotlight, cities, regulatory agencies, and conservation groups are seeking solutions. And in some areas, lots of improvements are already in place, powered by a new wave of cheaper, more energy-saving light bulbs.
【1】Why is the earthquake hitting Los Angeles mentioned?
A.To witness its serious damage. B.To lead in the topic of the text.
C.To state its influence on the city. D.To tell backgrounds of the text.
【2】What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Dark nights. B.Endangered ecosystems.
C.Light pollution. D.Brightened environments.
【3】How does the author sound in the last paragraph?
A.Hopeful. B.Concerned. C.Doubtful. D.Academic.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Bulbs: A Revolutionary Invention to Humans B.Conflict: A World with Light and Stillness
C.Earth Is Paying the Price for Brighter Nights D.The World Cannot Go Without the Night Sky

A Harvard research team’s first model of a portable exosuit (机械护甲) is made of cloth components worn on the waist and upper legs. A computer that’s built into the shorts can sense when the user shifts between walking and running.
Say the word "exosuit" and super heroes come to mind — somebody like Tony Stark from Marvel Comics, whose fancy suit enables him to become Iron Man. But scientists at Harvard University have been developing an actual exosuit, a wearable machine that can improve an average man’s strength and toughness. This model improves a wearer’s performance while he is walking or running.
The lead researcher Conor Walsh says when you put on his team’s suit, you definitely notice that it’s pulling across your joints, so you feel the drive from the suit. But after a while, you don’t really notice it anymore. The suit helps to extend the hip joint, saving the user’s energy. Though you might not notice it, when you shut the suit off after a few minutes of having it turned on, Walsh says, “You really quickly notice that your legs feel a little bit heavier.”
Walsh says, “This suit could be helpful for a soldier carrying heavy weights over long distances.” Research on the suit was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is part of the United States Department of Defense and develops military technology. “ Other future models might help people with medical problems like Parkinson’s disease to move more easily,” he says. “My lab cooperates with a company on a suit to help stroke survivors that is now commercially available.”
Karl Zelik, an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University, calls the team’s effort “promising work”. Zelik says it will enhance human abilities during various aspects of daily life. However, he notes that the exosuit field is changing fast. In the future, he says, the best assist devices may not be exosuits at all, but rather technology put inside a person’s body. He predicts that future wearables will also be able to figure out the wearer’s movement intention, and influence it when necessary to improve human performance.
【1】What may the exosuit do?
A.Cover a person’s whole body. B.Analyze a man’s health when he runs.
C.Make a person move faster and longer. D.Enable a person to become a superhero.
【2】How will people feel when they run with the exosuit on for a while?
A.Their legs may feel a little heavier. B.Their body may not feel anything strange.
C.Their joints will feel pulled by some strength. D.Their body may feel the driving force from it.
【3】What do Walsh’s words in Paragraph 4 suggest?
A.He works for American military force. B.The suit can protect soldiers in the distance.
C.People with Parkinson’s disease will be cured. D.A certain model of a suit can be bought now.
【4】What’s Zelik’s attitude towards the future of exosuits?
A.Objective. B.Optimistic. C.Indifferent. D.Hopeless.

Where do hurricane names come from? Why do we give human names to violent, mindless masses of water and wind? And how do we all agree which name to use?
Before the 1940s, only the worst storms were given names. 【1】There was the Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893, the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 to name a few.
The practice of using more memorable names didn't begin until 1950. It was when Atlantic tropical hurricanes received official names, although they still weren't human ones. 【2】 So the 1950 season featured such strangely named storms as Hurricane Dog, Hurricane Easy and Hurricane Love.
【3】 The same list of names was recycled every year, so the 1950-1952 seasons each featured a Hurricane Able through at least Hurricane Fox. That became confusing, so in 1953 the U.S. National Hurricane Center began using female human names, which proved far more successful. Not only did it make storm identification easier, but it helped authorities and news outlets spread warnings. 【4】
The first hurricane names were often inspired by forecasters' wives, but in 1979 men's names were added to the mix The World Meteorological Organization now monitors the master list of names, which alternates between male and females six lists are rotated annually in the Atlantic.so the 2015 names will be used again in 2021. 【5】 Seventy-eight Atlantic hurricane names have been retired since 1954, including 29 since 2000.
A.Besides, it helped the public pay attention to them.
B.These names were chosen from some familiar words.
C.This naming rule, however, had an obvious weakness.
D.These names of retired hurricanes are silly or unreasonable.
E.But when a hurricane is bad enough, its name can be retired.
F.They were usually based on the place or time of year they made landfall.
G.It is also easier to use names when we have more than one storm to track.

When I firstly came to the UK, I found out the importances of knowing English. Wherever I took a bus to a bank, or went to the market to buy a food, I had to communicate in English. Otherwise things would not go smoothly. But there are two more important reasons for me to learning English. One was to be able to go through the interview process to get a job but the other was to be able to read English and know what was going on the world. Luckily, I had learned English good enough. So, I nearly had no problem live in an English-speaking country any more.
