The story of Kit Kat the dog
The first time the rescuers met kit Kat, we recalled in shock and our hearts instantly went out to him. At his tender age, life had already dealt him so many harsh blows. Not only was he left to care for himself in the wild, but he also suffered pain with a horrific rash (皮疹).
Kit Kat was first brought to our attention by Anna, one of our volunteers. Kit Kat was said to be frightened of people and we eventually managed to put a leash (皮带) on Kit Kat and take him to the vet after a few days’ effort of tricking him with treats. He was well padded and his coat, though matted (无光泽的), was in good condition. Kit Kat also had good oral health.
Now on the mend, Kit Kat boasts a coat of soft, glossy fur and shows no signs of the pain he suffered from. While we have managed to heal his body, we have not been able to do the same for his broken spirit. However, we believe that with the right family and the right environment, Kit Kat will be able to flourish and shake off his sad past.

A.ask for volunteers and donations

I was an only child in the baby boom of the 1960s. I was upset about this and always admired my friend——Jessica. One day I went on holiday with her family. I remember she slammed her bedroom door after a tearful quarrel over a packet of biscuits that had been unfairly distributed. I was supposed to see the misery of her life us the second child of four, but all I could see was drama and excitement.
Nowadays, many single children have more than one child themselves, while those people who have one child most came from big families. It indicates a basic truth about human nature: we often want what we don’t have.
Of course, I have three children. To my annoyance, my children do a lot of grappling and nosily compete for attention. However, in the immediate aftermath (创伤) of inter-sibling (兄弟姐妹间的) slanging (漫骂) match, I often hear my daughter singing in her bedroom . Something has finished as soon as it gets started.
As for the disturbing situation, I turned to my workmate, who is married to an only, she told me, “My husband had no idea of the kids’ arguments. I had five siblings, and everything was up for grabs when I was growing up. So when my son and daughter fight, it’s water off a duck’s back.”
Parents who are only children think we have the power to fix the fight among children, and then find it unimaginably frustrating when we can’t. We often make the situation worse by over-responding to arguments. The psychologist Linda Blair, author of Birth Order, argues that it can be “very tricky” in families where both parents are only children, and that it can sometimes lead to “very anxious households”. If one parent has experience of sibling behavior, he or she can offer advice when irritation arises.
【1】What did the writer think of Jessica’s family?
A.It was more enjoy able to have siblings. B.It was unlucky to be a child of a large family.
C.Jessica’s family was so rich s to go on holiday. D.It was unfair when Jessica’s parents handed out biscuits.
【2】How docs the writer’s colleague deal with her children’s arguments?
A.By ignoring. B.By seeking help. C.By giving advice. D.By fixing the fight.
【3】What can we learn from the text?
A.People with siblings tend to have lots of kids.
B.In the 1960s people preferred to have only one child.
C.The writer’s daughter is always angry after the arguments.
D.The family relations may be tense if both parents are only children.
【4】The text is especially helpful for ________.
A.only children B.children with siblings
C.married women D.parents with several kids

While the Mars and the moon are currently the hottest destinations for outer space exploration. Mercury (水星) might be another exciting choice. The inner planet Mercury is extremely difficult to see with the naked eye. It is “the innermost and smallest terrestrial planet in solar system.” noted the BBC.
The European-Japanese BepiColombo spacecraft was successfully launched on Oct 20, marking the start of its seven-year trip to Mercury, the Guardian reported.
The European Space Agency (ESA) has described the journey as one of the most complex interplanetary missions ever undertaken. Mercury is located just 58 million kilometers away from the sun. It follows a tight path to make one revolution (公转) around the sun, completing a full orbit every 88 days. Therefore, in order to get into Mercury’s orbit, BepiColombo has to stand the extremely strong gravity of the sun. In order to solve the problem, BepiColombo will use special flybys (近天体探测飞行) to get into Mercury’s orbit.
According to ESA, Mercury’s temperature ranges from 450℃ on the sunward side to minus 180℃ on the dark side. In order to study the planet, the spacecraft “is going from one to the other over a few tens of minutes... our instruments have to operate around room temperature,” according to Suzanne Imber of the University of Leicester, UK. BepiColombo has been coated with temperature-resistant layers to keep it safe.
If everything goes as planned, BepiColombo will travel through or solar system at 60 kilometers per second and reach Mercury in late December 2025. It will then split into two probes that will travel in different directions.
“What this lets you do is look at the space environment around Mercury from two different directions at exactly the same time,” US planetary scientist Nancy Chabot told National Public Radio.
【1】According to text, Mercury is ________.
A.easily accessible B.well visible C.rarely explored D.extremely cold
【2】What’s the use of the special flybys?
A.To change the orbit. B.To escape the pull of the sun.
C.To accelerate the spacecraft. D.To resist the high temperature.
【3】What can we infer from Nancy’s words?
A.Extreme temperatures will be a challenge.
B.We can use gravitational forces to change direction.
C.We may get clearer pictures of Mercury’s revolution.
D.BepiColombo is likely to land on Mercury in the near future.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.The journey to Mercury. B.The mystery of Mercury.
C.The environment around Mercury. D.The life on Mercury.

The Ig Nobel Prize (搞笑诺贝尔奖) hands out awards for “achievements that first make people laugh, then make them think.” Sometimes the world of design can feel the same way: a pen that can detect cancer mid-surgery, for example. But a musical instrument engineered for zero gravity? Perhaps less so. Nevertheless, both are driven by the desire to improve lives.
The pen, musical instrument and more could be found at the Global Grad Show, which has rapidly become a regional networking opportunity with large commercial value, but that hasn’t stopped grassroots innovation from pushing through.
The graduate show, organized by author and designer Brendan MeGetrick, brought together 150 student projects from 100 universities including MIT and Harvard, and countries as diverse as Jordan. Chile and Pakistan. Schools, McGetrick told CNN, are “where one finds design in its purest and most potentially valuable form.”
“Free from the commercial pressures of professional life, the next generation of designers is channeling their craft to improve the world,” he added. “The next generations do not have the luxury to hope that the present issues will be solved. They anticipate the worst and see how they might channel their talents and training to invent tools that we will need before we urgently need them.
This year’s winner of the Global Grad Show, Mirjam de Bruijn said: “I think we should stop thinking that we can do it on our own. I think designers, scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs should start working together. As a designer, I see too many great solutions that are not being used because their design is bad, and I am sure that scientists or technologists think the same with some designs that look better than they actually work.”
【1】A pen and a musical instrument are mentioned to show ________.
A.some designs are ridiculous but meaningful. B.sone achievements are serious but useless.
C.some instruments are supernatural but handy. D.some surgeries are risky bout reasonable.
【2】How will the Global Grad Show benefit the graduates?
A.By leaching skills and knowledge.
B.By offering scientific researches.
C.By providing commercially valuable opportunities.
D.By inspiring the invention ol the urgently needed tools.
【3】According to MeGetrick, the next generation of designers ________.
A.wants to work out the present issues eagerly
B.hates to make their designs on their own
C.feels angry for those solutions not being used
D.tends to find design in its purest form
【4】Which or the following statements might Mirjam de Bruijn agree with?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.Two heads are better than one.
C.Great minds think alike. D.Birds of a feather flock together.
