This summer, I went to Sports Camp with my little brother, Charlie. When we hiked to the pond, I was the only one who didn’t jump in. “Can’t you swim, Brandon?” asked Henry. I can, but after you've seen pond water under a microscope(显微镜), you’re less eager to cool off in it.
Tonight after sundown, we’re playing Capture the Flag. The campers are divided into two teams, Blue and Red. Each team hides a flag, then has an hour to find and take the other team’s flag. Charlie and I are on the Blue team. When Kenneth, our team captain, asks who wants to scout out the Red flag. My brother raises his hand.
Charlie goes with a bunch of boys from our team. The rest of us stay behind to guard our flag, which we've hidden in a nearby tree. Soon, Charlie is back, his face as red as paint. “All the others were caught. But I saw their flag!” he pants. “Inside the door of the director’s cabin!”
Kenneth waves us over. “Time’s running out. Any ideas?”
“I’ll stay with Charlie and Isaiah and guard our flag,” offers Henry.
Kenneth points to Marshall and me. “let’s go.” he says.
We run through the woods. Unluckily, two boys from the Red team noticed Kenneth and Marshall, and they were caught. I hide behind a tree and try to figure out which cabin is the director’s.
A whistle sounds, and my heart beats fast. Only five minutes left! No time to check every cabin. Which one is the right one? Suddenly, I smell something familiar. The director's after-shave! I’m sure of it.
I climb up the steps and open the door. The flag!
“Get him!” Someone shouts.
I grab the flag and race for our home base. Two boys from the Red team are right behind me. I reach our home base just before I hear the final whistle blow loud and long. Blue wins!
【1】Why doesn’t the writer want to swim in the pond?
A.He can’t swim. B.The weather is not hot.

It would be nice if eating a particular food could magically protect you against all the boring illnesses. It’s not that simple, of course. Hand washing remains your best defense against picking up illnesses, and sleep is a strong defense too. But what you eat does play an important part. Though it isn’t because of just one or two foods, what you eat in your daily diet have an effect on how weak or strong your immunity(免疫力)is.
We’d better eat fruits and vegetables every day. They contain key vitamins needed in the immune system. For example, Vitamin C and Ain foods help immune system work well to keep us healthy. Remember that eating the actual fruit or veggie is better than eating single-vitamin supplements(补品).
Getting too little protein(蛋白质) can weaken your immune system. Protein-rich foods supply the amino acids(氨基酸)you need to build important proteins in the body. Animal foods like beef and pork also contain zinc(锌), which your body uses to make t-cells.
Fermented foods are foods that are naturally protected by bacteria(细菌), and they’re good for the micro biome(微生物).That’s the name for the bacteria that live in your stomach, where a lot of cells in immunity actually live. Fermented foods like yogurt help beneficial bacteria develop fast in the stomach, leaving less room for harmful bacteria.
【1】What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.Hand washing is necessary. B.Illnesses make people bored.
C.Immunity has much to do with your diet. D.More sleep does good to health.
【2】Why does the writer suggest we eat fruits and vegetables every day?
A.They are rich in vitamins we need.
B.Vitamin A is helpful for immunity.
C.Fruits supply our body with Vitamin C only.
D.Eating single-vitamin foods does little good.
【3】What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Amino acids can help to make t-cells.
B.Healthy body needs plenty of protein.
C.The immune system can be hurt easily.
D.We should eat animal foods as many as possible.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Different foods have different uses.
B.Fruits and vegetables keep us healthy.
C.Many illnesses do harm to the immunity.
D.Proper daily diet protects our immune system.

A number of companies have used the wind and sun to produce energy. Now, one company called ORPC is using the force of flowing rivers and ocean currents(水流). The company recently presented the new technology at an energy conference near Washington, DC.
Christopher Sauer is the chief executive officer of ORPC. He says the technology was designed for small, rural communities that do not have easy access to power sources.
The ORPC technology is an energy generator(发电机) which can be put under water, called RivGen. It works in a series of steps. First, the generator is put in the middle of a steel cage on top of a wide boat. Wheels – or, turbines – are attached to each side of the generator. The boat, cage, and generator all sink(下沉) to the bottom of the river. There, the river current turns the wheels and creates as much as 50 kilowatts of power.
The turbines are safe for the animals that live in the river. The generator is not very tall, so it can work in water areas that are not very deep. Other companies are not able to work in shallow (浅的)water.
Another feature of the technology are “crossflow turbines(双击式水轮机).” They make the turbines move in the same direction, whatever way the water is flowing. The turbines’ shape helps the generator harvest power from tidal currents in the ocean. The company's ocean turbine is called TidGen. It can create up to 600 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power a small settlement. Right now, the amount of power TidGen can harvest changes as the strength of the tide goes up and down. But ORPC workers are trying to make the power harvest steady(稳定的). In time, they want TidGen power to be part of the main energy sources.
【1】What does “RivGen” refer to in the text?
A.A boat. B.TidGen.
C.An energy generator. D.The ORPC company.
【2】What is special about ORPC’s generator compared with other companies?
A.It is safe for the sea animals.
B.It is suitable for small rural communities.
C.It can work in water that is not deep.
D.It can take energy from water movement.
【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.ORPC is able to make much power at the same speed.
B.The strength of the tide decides on the amount of power.
C.TidGen power has become part of the main energy sources.
D.Water’s flowing helps the turbines move in different directions.
【4】What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To introduce. B.To sell. C.To educate. D.To prevent.

If you live in a place where most people speak the language you are learning, you may use the language for several hours each day. But you may not have these chances to practice English. You may even be self-taught.【1】It is not very difficult, but it does take effort and practice.
Think in single words.
【2】In your head, try to name each object in your surroundings. As you continue with this, it becomes more of a habit, so things are going to pop up into your head – computer, telephone, chair, and desk. Whatever it is, wherever you are. You can also do this at home when you wake up and before you go to sleep.
【3】
Another exercise is describing in your mind objects you don't know the words for. An example would be if you couldn't think of the word “garage,” Hinshaw says. “If you're looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can't think of the name in English. You can say, 'The place inside where I put my car.”
Think in sentences.
The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences. For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, “It's such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.”【4】
Describe your day.
Another exercise experts suggest is to describe your daily activities. You can mentally make plans in the morning when you wake up. 【5】So the skill level is a little higher.
A.Describe unknown words.
B.Guess the meaning of a new word.
C.This would require future verb tenses.
D.A good first step is to think in individual words.
E.Hinshaw says doing this can help learners of any language.
F.Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.
G.The good news is that thinking in English can bring you a huge step closer to fluency!

I lived in the State of Texas, where sudden storms often happened every year. Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started dinner. Everything seemed peaceful. Faye and I played happily in the yard. The heat had been building since dawn. Suddenly the temperature dropped--- it felt good.
Then Mama shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside, read quick now!”
I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust, like thick smoke from a railway engine’s chimney. All the birds flew away. The stop lights nearby weren't working because of a power failure.
“Faye, go with Mama!” I shouted. “I’ll warn Papa.”
Faye ran toward the house. The storm hit so fast that I hardly saw her climb the steps. In a short time, the day turned into night. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back. But I couldn’t hear or see him at all.
Some poor house roofs were blown off, and small trees down. I thought a terrible storm was on the way and the scene was “the worst I've seen in several years.” The dirt and sand stung(刺痛) my face like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I made my way toward the car and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Papa was still out somewhere! I needed to help him find the car.
I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights. They made some rays, but would Papa see them in the thick darkness? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Papa would hear it.
Suddenly, Papa’s face appeared at the window.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Papa shut off the car’s lights and I worried the dirt would bury us.
