Studying in class all the time, do you sometimes wonder what’s going on outside? Most kids do. That’s why schools encourage students to do after-school activities. Do you do them? Which one is the best?
Ji Xuan, 14, Shanxi: Our school has a charity club called A Loving Heart. Once a student suffering from leukemia(白血病)needed money for doctors. We went on the streets to raise money for him. Lots of kind people gave their money. I still remember how heavy the donation(捐款)box was!

I’ve tried them all but the inventing. I especially like going to museums. I have learned a lot about history from museums.
Ding Peipei, 15, Shanghai: Once we helped with a survey about how people spent their National Day Holiday. We went on the streets and asked people to fill out forms. Some people wouldn’t do it, but most agreed to do the survey if you gave them a big smile.
Han Lang, 14, Beijing: We go into the community to clean up and scrape(刮掉)off ads from walls and so on. Once we even went to a police station to help the police do their cleaning. It was exciting. After all, unless you do something bad, you’ll never find yourself in a police station.

Most 7-year-old kids just do their homework and play with their friends. But Jose Adolfo Quisocola from Peru, now 13 years old, managed to set up his own “eco-bank” when he was just 7.
Quisocola saved up his pocket money to create the Bartselana Student Bank in 2012. If students want to open an account(账户)with the bank, they have to provide a “deposit ”(存款)of five kilograms of solid waste, such as paper or plastic. And they must continue to deposit at least 1 kilogram of waste each month, as well as attend finance and recycling workshops(工作坊).
The waste is sold to local recycling companies, which in turn pay the bank for the waste. The bank’s members then have this money deposited into their accounts, allowing them to save up money by recycling.
“At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not run this type of project,” Quisocola said to DOGOnews. “Luckily, I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my classroom.”
Quisocola’s project has developed quickly. By 2013, the bank had had over 200 members. Later, it got support from local people and set up its own education centers. The bank is now accepting applications(申请)from children all over Peru.
Quisocola has received many awards for his efforts, including the Children’s Climate Prize, which is awarded by a Swedish energy company.
“Together we can change the world …. We just need a chance,” Quisocola said.

In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be a coach at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games, I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak. I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied, “No, I really don’t want to do this.” I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldn’t be right to force him, either. Actually, the boy didn’t need a close talk but a friend.
At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting alone. I tried again with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boy’s name was Tommy. Then I asked campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend time with him when they could.
The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise, I found the boy who was always under the tree dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldn’t believe it was the same person.
In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommy’s mother. She told me that Tommy was hit by a car and killed. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said, “Tommy mentioned you so many times. I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference to Tommy during his last months.”
At that moment, I realized how easy it was to give a bit of yourself every day. You may never know how much each kind action may mean to someone else. I hope that everyone can pay attention to their own boy under the tree.
【1】The writer was a __________ before he went to the high school summer camp.
A.camper B.student C.coach D.dancer
【2】From paragraph 4, we can infer that Tommy’s mother felt very __________ to the writer.
A.sorry B.thankful C.excited D.careful
【3】From the passage, we can learn that __________.
A.we should talk to people when they need friends
B.we need to pay attention to boys under the trees
C.we should give something useful to strangers
D.we should offer help though it may seem tiny

Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check where the food is from. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey from “field to plate” is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者).
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn’t have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to get most of their food from foreign countries. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What’s wrong with “food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more trucks, planes, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global(全球的)warming. Besides, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.
【1】People used to buy local food because __________.
A.people liked local markets B.local food was in season
C.people didn’t travel a lot D.local food was their food supply
【2】The word “available” in paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.
A.nowhere to buy B.quite easy to get
C.too expensive to afford D.impossible to shop for
【3】This passage is mainly about __________.
A.what “food miles” means and its influence
B.how difficult food travels from “field to plate”
C.where different types of food on our tables come from
D.why some counties get the food from other countries

Remember the “good old days” when you could sit around the table with your family and not have your conversation stopped by the sudden ringing of the cell phone? A new show at Pleasant Hill City Museum, allows visitors to take a walk down memory lane and think about all the changes that have taken place in their everyday lives in the past 100 years.
“We hope the show will make people think deeply about the many changes of the past century.” Margaret Scott, director of the museum, said recently. “Our grandparents could never have imagined the lives we are living today.”
The show allows people to get a picture of daily life, past and present. A few hours at the museum gives elderly visitors a chance to both relive their early days and get caught up on today’s latest technology. For young visitors, who can compare the large radios of days gone by with today’s tiny MP3 players, the show will be a real eye-opener.
“It’s interesting to walk around and hear people’s opinions. Some speak highly of today’s technological progress, while others are missing the past.” says Scott.
The show focuses on everyday objects used in the home and is separated into five parts – the living room, kitchen, bedroom, dining room, and yard – describing life then and now.
Gary Anderson was visiting the museum with his granddaughter, Alison, last Sunday afternoon. A retired engineer in his 70s, Anderson said the living room scene from the past reminded him of Saturday nights he spent with his family. “It was fun to see the old board games we used to play. We didn’t have a television or any of those fancy computer games when I was young, but sometimes we’d turned on our big radio and we’d listened to the music and voices from faraway places. Of course, life was hard back then because we had to work hard but we always enjoyed our Saturday nights together. I think lots of people today don’t know how to enjoy quality time with their family.”
Alison Anderson, 14, said she was interested to look around the kitchen and yard. “It looked like it was really difficult to make a meal in the old days. You had to go outside to get water and you had to cut firewood into pieces for the stove. Nowadays, we just turn on the tap to get water and push a button on the microwave to cook our food. I guess I’m pretty lucky.”
Emma Smith, 42, was looking at the show of modern devices in a typical teenager’s bedroom. “Some of the devices today’s kids have are great!” Smith said. “They’re fantastic, but they seem really difficult for me. I have no idea how to download music onto my MP3 player! I guess it’s time I learned. A person really needs to keep up with the times.”
At the same time, Joey Park, 3, looked happy playing with some wooden blocks(积木)in the bedroom from the past. His sister Melissa, 7, was also glad to play with one of the dolls.
Watching his two children at play, Jim Park said, “My kids love watching videos and they’re even learning how to use computers but they also love playing with the same types of toys kids have been playing with for centuries. They really enjoy good things from the past and present.”
【1】What is the meaning of quality time for Gary Anderson?
A.He could play board games with his family.
B.He could listen to some music with his family.
C.He could spend most of his life with his family.
D.He could work hard to buy a radio for his family.
【2】What can we learn from the passage?
A.People of all ages enjoyed the show.
B.Visitors had different attitudes towards daily life.
C.The show led most elderly people to catch up with new technology.
D.Some young visitors showed no interest in the objects used in the past.
【3】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Changes in Our lives. B.A Show of Old Days.
C.Developments in Science. D.A Bridge between Past and Present.

Digital Eyestrain(视觉疲劳)
Are your eyes dry, watery, blurry, and do your back and neck ache? If so, you are likely one of many people today who are troubled by digital eyestrain, and also called computer-vision syndrome(综合症).
How does it start?
Eyestrain is often related to the amount of time people spend in front of screens, and the distance from eyes to screens and the use of many screens at the same time. However, studies have also shown that the blue light produced by digital devices today reaches further into the eyes than other kinds of light. This light actually helps attention during the day but can result in sleepless patterns at night.
Adjust(调整)your position
Scientists have clearly expressed that eyestrain is not a necessary bad thing, even in a modern world that can’t go without technology. Changing some simple details about your relative position to screens, such as staying about 60 centimeters away, will help. Also, avoid overhead and other direct sources of light, and use shaded lamps and window blinds while looking at digital devices instead.
Change your hardware
Beyond the ways that you relate to digital screens, there are also ways to change how you view screens that are helpful in fighting against eyestrain. To begin with, your computer screen should be high-resolution, at least 50 centimeters wide and may require a screen filter to decrease reflections. Also, be aware that “computer glasses”, which cut down glare and blue light, are available and that contact lenses can increase the risk of eyestrain.
Break your habits
Finally, many of us fall into bad habits while using digital screens that only worsen the effects of eyestrain. When viewing digital screens, many people blink one third less often than they usually do. Place a reminder on your computer to “blink!” so that your eyes don’t dry out. Also, rest your eyes’ focusing muscles by using the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
There are many other methods used to help ease eyestrain, so find what works for you in your daily life.
