Samantha Whiting, from Texas, USA, was on holiday with her family in California earlier this year when every parent’s worst nightmare came to life.
While playing on the beach, Samantha spotted her 10-year-old daughter Hayley drifting out into deeper water. She called Hayley back to shore, only for the youngster to realise she was caught in the rip current(离岸流)and couldn’t swim back in. The current was dragging her out to sea rapidly and she called for her mum to help her as Samantha desperately tried to reach her little girl. “I will never forget her face when she said, ‘Mum, help me!’” Samantha told KFSN, recalling the terror in her daughter’s voice. She managed to reach her daughter but wasn’t able to swim her back to shore and the pair were struggling.
Nearby, Kevin Cozzi and his girlfriend heard the screaming. He quickly jumped into action when he realized Hayley was in danger. “I’ve been swimming since I was 3 years old competitively, so I felt like I could get to them,” Cozzi told KFSN. “I ran out there and as soon as I got to the mum, I just told her to give me her daughter because I knew she was struggling.” He swam Hayley back to shore and a lifeguard rushed to help the 10-year-old, meanwhile Samantha was thanking the total stranger who had saved her little girl from drowning.
“If it were not for him coming to help me, there’s no way that we both would have made it, ” the grateful mum said.
Months went by, and Samantha only knew Cozzi’s first name and that he lived in Merced, California. However, she never stopped looking for the heroic bystander.
Earlier this week, she posted about the rescue in a Facebook group called Merced Neighborhood Watch, and within hours they reconnected.
Cozzi and his girlfriend had to put off their wedding because of COVID-19, and Samantha decided to set up a GoFund Me account to help Cozzi and his girlfriend have the wedding of their dreams. Both Samantha and Hayley have been invited to the wedding, set for next fall, and look forward to once again thanking Cozzi in person. Faced with a declining population and shrinking workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T. Designed by Telexistence Inc., this seven-foot-tall robot is currently undergoing trials restocking sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience store chains Lawson and FamilyMart.
Telexistence has received funding from technology investment company Softbank Group and cell phone service operator KDDI in Japan, with overseas investors including European passenger aircraft maker Airbus Ventures. It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.
Model-T, whose face somewhat resembles that of a kangaroo, is certainly not the first restocking robot. However, the warehouse robots currently being used by companies, like Walmart and Amazon, are only able to accomplish single, repetitive tasks, such as carrying boxes. Model-T, on the other hand, has a wide range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores, which sell a large variety of items.
“It is able to grasp or pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations,” Matt Komatsu, head of business development and operations at Telexistence Inc., told CNN Business. However, Model-T is not autonomous. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality(VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf. Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation process is seamless. Telexistence says the VR-controlled androids are easier to develop and maintain. They are also ten times cheaper than autonomous robots, which require complex programming.
Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only capable of lifting packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.
【1】What is the main driving factor for the invention of Model-T?
A.The demands of senior citizens. B.The development of technology.
C.The shortage of labour force. D.The appeal of convenience stores.
【2】What’s the hidden message behind the name Model-T?
A.It is an updated version of Ford Motor. B.It may create a new age like Ford Motor.
C.Its bond with Ford Motor is inseparable. D.Its design is as fashionable as Ford Motor.
【3】How is Model-T different from other restocking robots?
A.It has a cute appearance to attract customers. B.It can accomplish single and repetitive tasks.
C.It is flexible while performing its duty. D.It comes in a wide variety of sizes.
【4】What can we learn about Model-T according to Paragraph 4?
A.It doesn’t need maintenance. B.It performs tasks automatically.
C.It requires complex programming. D.It depends largely on human’s operation.
【5】What does the underlined word “seamless” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Smooth. B.Complex. C.Time-consuming. D.Annoying.
【6】What is mainly discussed about Model-T in the last paragraph?
A.Its limitations. B.Its working principle.
C.Its applications. D.Its exciting prospect.

Let’s take a moment to consider the words of one of America’s most remarkable philosophers, Henry David Thoreau.
Thoreau spent the years 1845-1847 living on the outskirts of society in a small cabin in the woods by the side of Waldon Pond. He called this period of his life an experiment of intentional living and wrote this famous paragraph:
I went to the woods because I wished to live intentionally, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow(精华)of life.
There is great wisdom in Thoreau’s purpose here, and I think it’s very useful to ask ourselves this question:What would our lives be like if we sucked all the marrow out of life?
If Thoreau’s quote sounds familiar, it may be from watching the film Dead Poets Society, a movie with deep wisdom. The film is about young men at a boarding school as they prepare to do good in the world because they have the privilege to bring about change. Their English teacher, played by Robin Williams, tries to convince them that they should live life well now instead of believing that they will find happiness after they reach certain goals. Part of his argument is conveyed by quoting this famous passage from Thoreau.
Sucking the marrow out of life sounds simple enough, but as a matter of fact, it may be the most difficult thing that we can ever do. But it actually is as simple as it. Sounds—though “simple” is not quite the same thing as “easy”. I can think of one barrier that often keeps us from living our best lives. What keeps us from getting the most out of life is our desire for approval and fame. In the process of always looking for fame and glory, there is the danger that we will stop living. In order to seek approval from others, we fail to find a sense of approval within our own spirit.
When we become aware that we are missing so much out of life, we can decide that we want to make changes. Our best move is to start small. If we are having a meal, whether a great festival feast or a modest supper, it is always within our power to take it slowly and really feel, taste, and enjoy the food before us. Few of us can easily do like Henry David Thoreau and get away from it all in the wilderness. But we can make small changes every single day.
【1】What wisdom is conveyed in Thoreau’s words?
A.Stay away from city life. B.Live one’s life to the fullest.
C.Only nature can bring happiness. D.One can never be too old to learn.
【2】Why did the author mention the film Dead Poets Society?
A.To recommend a good film. B.To praise the teacher’s wisdom.
C.To further illustrate Thoreau’s wisdom. D.To state the film was adapted from Thoreau’s works.
【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards people’s seeking for approval?
A.Critical. B.Supportive. C.Sympathetic. D.Unconcerned.
【4】How can people change life for the better according to the author?
A.Live in the wildness. B.Set higher goals.
C.Make small changes daily. D.Read more classics.
【5】What could be the best title of the passage?
A.Ask for More:Thoreau Exposes the Meaning of Life
B.Sunk in Thought:Thoreau Outshines Ancient Philosophers
C.Aim High:Thoreau’s Practical Advice Ensures Successful Life
D.To Live Intentionally:Thoreau’s Philosophy Remains Valuable

The Camp Fire starting at 6:33 a.m. on November 8, 2018 was the most destructive in California history. It was touched off by faulty electrical transmission lines in the town of Paradise. It burned for 17 days and consumed 153336 acres of land, destroying nearly19000 buildings, leaving 50000 homeless, and killing 85. The damage was inestimable.
Shane Grammer, a creative director for Disney’s theme parks, followed the news of the fire closely. When his childhood friend Shane Edwards posted photos of his white chimney-the only part of his house to survive-Grammer felt helpless. And then he had an idea.
“I’ve got to paint that chimney. I’m not trying to say anything and it’s just an opportunity for me to express something.” said Grammer.
On December 31, Grammer devoted three hours to spray-painting a black-and-white image of a woman on the chimney-a reminder, perhaps, of the beauty of life, or even just of life itself. He then posted it on Instagram. The victims of the fire, especially, could not contain themselves. “Beautiful and unforgettable,” one said. Another posted, “You bring beauty and hope.”
Grammer realized what he had thought was a purely artistic expression had changed into something deeper, the nature of true art. “When the first mural(壁画)moved so many people in this community, I knew I had to come back up, “Grammer told KRCR-TV in Redding. Over a period of three months he returned eight times, painting 17 murals of victims on walls, pickups, and pieces of buildings. “There is hope,” he explains. “There is beauty in the ashes.”
Grammer’s work in Paradise has now initiated a movement. He has traveled the world painting murals in dark places that badly needed some light. “I want to do something powerful and create art that moves people,” he says.
【1】What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?(no more than 8 words)
【2】How do people find Grammer’s first painting?(no more than 3 words)
【3】Why can people get inspired from Grammer’s paintings?(no more than 15 words)
【4】What does the underlined word in Para.6 mean?(1 word)
【5】In times of trouble, what can you do to help people in need? Please share.(no more than 20 words)
