With coronavirus (新冠肺炎)outbreaks at different stages around the world, in many countries lockdowns are being carefully eased off while urging citizens to keep on practicing the social distancing rules. Singapore is trying a new way of carrying it out--a robot dog.
The government has arranged Spot, a yellow and black robotic dog made by Boston Dynamics Company, at one local park. The same robot has been previously seen dancing to hit song “Uptown Funk.”However, 2020 is an extremely difficult year and the company is trying to assist the national coronavirus-control effort. In turn, the job has been handed over to Spot.
The four-legged robot dog patrols(巡查) the park and broadcasts a pre-recorded message to encourage visitors to observe safe distancing measures. As it walks around the park, the dog says in a female voice, "Let's keep Singapore healthy. For your own safety and for those around you, please stand at least one meter apart. Thank you.
Spot is one of the world's most advanced robots and unlike wheeled robots, it is capable of going pretty much anywhere a dog can go and can walk up to three miles per hour over different areas, making it ideal for operation in public parks and gardens. Furthermore, it is remotely controlled and has cameras with 360-degree vision and analytic tools to scan the surroundings and help officials estimate the number of people gathering in the park.
For now, the pilot project is currently set to run in a limited trial for two weeks at one park during off-peak(非高峰)hours. But if all goes well, authorities will consider expanding the program to improve enforcement(强制)of social distance throughout on Singapore
Spot is also being used in other ways during the public health crisis beyond just patrolling a park. The government says it's also using Spot in another capacity- at a local isolation facility where the robot helps bring medicine to patients.

They are probably the longest-standing and biggest rivals (对手) in international sport— Chinese badminton player Lin Dan, with his deadly smashes (扣球) and drop shots, and his Malaysian rival Lee Chong Wei, who is known for his spirit and determination.
Over the years, the two have competed with each other many times, and both have experienced victory and defeat. But Lin beat Lee the first two times they faced each other in the Olympic Games—in Beijing in 2008 and then in London in 2012.
And that was inadmissible for Lee. In fact, according to BadmintonBlaze.com, Lee once said that if he had the choice between winning an Olympic gold and beating Lin, he would absolutely choose victory over his old rival.
And he eventually did, at the 2016 Rio Games. When he beat Lin that day, Lee dropped to the floor, covered his face with his hands and looked around the stadium like a gold-medal moment although Lee eventually lost out in the final to another Chinese player, Chen Long.
All the years of trying to outdo each other have not only driven Lin and Lee to surpass (超越) themselves as players, but also developed a special friendship between the two.
They care for and encourage each other. They invited each other to their own weddings. And right before this year’s Malaysia Open, Lee, who wasn’t able to compete there on account of his nose cancer, wrote on social networking site Facebook, “My friend Lin Dan, you have my best wishes for this Malaysian Open. If I were to hope for a non-Malaysian to win the men’s singles title, I hope that it’s you my friend, my greatest rival.”
Lin and Lee are now pushing 36 and 37 respectively—ages by which most athletes would have retired—but they are planning to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, in the hope that they can play each other once again.
It’s as Badminton Association of Malaysia vice president David Wee once said of the two, “they bring out the best in each other”.
【1】Which phrase can best describe their relationship?
A.Familiar strangers. B.Friends and enemies.
C.Colleagues and rivals. D.Teammates and competitors.
【2】What does the underlined word “inadmissible” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Unacceptable. B.Inescapable.
C.Unexpected. D.Impossible.
【3】What did Lee’s reaction at the 2016 Rio Games indicate?
A.He mistakenly believed he had won the gold medal.
B.He was confident to defeat Lin Dan next time.
C.He didn’t care about the Olympic gold medals.
D.He took his victory over Lin most seriously.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Lin ranks second to Lee in the world badminton.
B.Lin is sure to compete against Lee at the 2020 Olympics.
C.Lee has no intention to quit playing badminton in spite of his nose cancer.
D.Lee wished Lin to win the men’s singles title in this year’s Malaysia Open.

Do a country 's people get happier as it gets richer? Most governments seem to believe so, given their continuous focus on increasing GDP year by year. Reliable, long-term evidence linking wealth and happiness is, however, lacking. And measuring well-being is itself filled with problems, since it often relies on surveys that ask participants to assess their own levels of happiness subjectively.
Daniel Sgroi of the University of Warwick and Eugenio Proto of the University of Glasgow, both in Britain, think, nevertheless, that they have an answer.
By examining millions of books and newspaper articles published since 1820 in four countries (America, Britain, Germany and Italy), they have developed what they hope is an objective measure of each place’s historical happiness. And their answer is that wealth does bring happiness, but some other things bring more of it.
In Britain, for example, happiness fell sharply during the two world wars. It began to rise again after 1945, peaked in 1950, and then fell gradually, including through the so-called Swinging Sixties, until it reached a nadir around 1980.
America’s national happiness, too, fell during the world wars. It also fell in the 1860s, during and after the country 's civil war. The lowest point of all came in 1975, at the end of a long decline during the Vietnam war, with the fall of Saigon and America’s humiliating defeat.
Overall, then, Dr Sgroi and Dr Proto found that happiness does vary with GDP. But the effect of health and life expectancy is larger, even when the tendency of wealth to improve health is taken into account.
A one — year increase in longevity, for example, has the same effect on national happiness as a 4.3% increase in GDP. And, as the grand historical sweep suggests, it is warfare that causes the biggest drops in happiness.
On average it takes a 30% increase in GDP to raise happiness by the amount that a year of war causes it to fall. The upshot appears to be that, while increasing national income is important to happiness, it is not as important as ensuring the population is healthy and avoiding conflict.
【1】According to the passage, why do most governments continuously focus on increasing GDP year by year?
A.To increase its people 's wealth.
B.To strengthen its people 's health.
C.To improve its people 's happiness.
D.TO improve its overall national strength.
【2】What do Daniel and Eugenio probably agree?
A.Warfare has no effect on happiness.
B.Happiness has nothing to do with GDP.
C.GDP is the most important factor in improving people 's happiness.
D.Health and life expectancy bring more happiness than GDP does.
【3】From the passage we can know that ________.
A.Happiness rose to the top in Britain around 1980.
B.America’s national happiness fell to the bottom in 1975.
C.A one — year increase in longevity has the same effect as GDP on happiness.
D.The fall of happiness caused by war takes a 30% increase in GDP to raise.
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.What on earth can bring people 's happiness?
B.Why wealth can 't bring people 's happiness?
C.What effect can war have on people 's happiness?
D.Why health can bring happiness to people?

You want to be respected, but you’re not sure how this whole thing works.【1】 How can you help others? How can you inspire change, growth, and new ideas in others? When you think about the people you respect deeply, what do they do differently from the others? Here are some of my own tips:
【2】
When you’re interviewing someone, do the background research and find out everything you need to know to make an effective interview. When you’re going to a job interview, make sure you’ve learned about the company and know what their needs are. When you’re talking to friends, listen and gather information from the conversations and remember things that they care about to strengthen your relationship.
Stop being too nice.
Distinguish(区分) kindness from always having to do things for people. 【3】A person who is easy to be persuaded is unwelcome if your goal is to be respected. If you’re too nice to everyone all the time, some people might even think you’re not genuine.
Speak your mind.
When it is necessary, make sure you speak your mind. People who are highly respected have strong opinions on many topics, and lots of ideas about how to improve things. 【4】
Don’t believe the self-talk.
If you want others to respect you, it’s obvious that you need to respect yourself. 【5】On those days, you will experience negative self-talk. Don’t believe it. Remember your strengths and learn from your mistakes.
A.Be open-minded.
B.Always do your homework.
C.Don’t be afraid to mention these ideas.
D.The key is to start thinking about others.
E.It’s not always easy, as we all have our bad days.
F.Trying to make everyone happy won’t get you very far.
G.The respect you get from others is a result of the way you behave.
