Reading is the key to success in all school subjects. With a bit of creativity, you can help your child enjoy reading more, and encourage him to do more!
Buy or borrow a lot of “fun” books. Choose books that are slightly below his level of reading ability. Don’t forget what your child likes to do when choosing books for him. Don’t comment about the books. Simply leave the books lying on the table where your child is sure to see them. Computer games are not as harmful as most parents usually think them to be. Instead, you should take advantage of your child’s love of computer games to purchase those that require a lot of reading and avoid those that are simply computerized video games.
Buy your child a bedside reading lamp, or a tiny book light. Tell him that from now on, he must be in bed by a specific time (say 8:30) and that he can either sleep or read. Most kids will do anything else rather than go to sleep, so there’s a chance you’ll create a new bedtime reading habit.
Many children will read when they are sitting alone having a snack, or when they have a few minutes of unplanned free time. Put a box of books and magazines near the kitchen table so that reading material is accessible.
Often, once children learn to read independently, parents stop reading to them. This change of routine causes great sadness to a child who has come to love falling asleep as you read. Even a teenager will enjoy being read to if you pick books that interest him. Select books together, and make sure they’re ones you enjoy as well, so your enjoyment will come through as you read to them.
【1】To make children become interested in reading, parents should ________.
A.choose the easiest books for them to read
B.tell them what they can learn from these books
C.choose books based on their interest
D.always read books together with them
【2】Which of the following is NOT what parents are advised to do?
A.Pick the right computer games. B.Reduce children’s sleeping time. C.Have reading material available. D.Read to children when possible.
【3】The main idea of the passage is to ________.
A.help children succeed in school subjects
B.teach parents how to encourage children to read
C.remind parents of the importance of reading
D.give parents advice on how to educate children
【4】According to the passage, why should parents set a specific bedtime for their children?
A.To ensure their children have enough sleep.
B.Because their children are too naughty and make noises.
C.Because children will do anything else rather than go to sleep.
D.Because it can help develop a bedtime reading habit

It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling(蜷缩) together inside the storm door on the top step. “Any old paper, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet scandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front door struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Mercy, no!”
I looked at my shabby slipcover ( 家具套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucer.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They didn’t say “Thank you”. They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof covered over our heads, my man with a good, steady job—these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small scandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a whole, I thought, just in case I should begin to feel how rich I am.
【1】Why did the writer let the children in?
A.She showed great pity on them.
B.She had old papers to sell.
C.She knew them and wanted to make them a cup of coca.
D.She wanted to invite them to her Thanksgiving party.
【2】The girl thought the writer was rich perhaps in that .
A.she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable B.she saw the cups matched the saucers C.the writer’s slipcovers were very new D.the boy thought so
【3】From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on .
A.how much money you have had B.how you feel about your life
C.how you have helped others D.what job you are doing
【4】The writer left the muddy prints of small scandals on the floor for a while to .
A.show her husband that someone had come B.remind her that she had helped two children
C.show that she was a kind-hearted woman D.remind her how rich she was

Are you preparing a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the book. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.
Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.
【1】According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?
A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels. B.Physical exercise helps us think better. C.The brain needs special mental exercise. D.The more exercise, the bigger brain.
【2】The underlined word “trace” most probably means .
A.to find the result of something B.to seek the details of something
C.to follow the example of something D.to find the origin of something
【3】Why is yoga suggested for seniors?
A.It does good to the bones of old people. B.It does not increase the heart rate. C.It includes learning new actions. D.It can be done in groups.
【4】What is main idea of this passage?
A.How exercise makes people strong. B.How to get good scores on a test. C.How exercise helps the brain. D.How the brain can change.

Many people say that the United States is a paradise for the children, a struggling field for the youth and a tomb for the aged. However, the situation is quite different in Australia. Different people have their own ways for enjoyment and their own worlds of pastime.
Most children often work hard in school since they have to face various exams. After school they do not want to confine themselves to books any more. Instead, they put aside their schoolbags at home and sneak quickly to some quiet street comers for their games. Bigger children like to shoulder their large kites to some steep cliffs, and jump to fly in the sky with their kites.
Some old people often get up early in the morning and go to parks to do newspaper reading. After breakfast, they come to horse races, dog races and sometimes car races for betting. If he wins, he will feed himself a good dinner. In the evening, they stay at home, watching TV sometimes with grandchildren. Some of the aged also enjoy fishing and gardening.
Young people prefer to go outing for holidays. At the weekends, they go to the seashore for swimming or to the forest for hunting and camping, or mountainous areas for picnicking. Then in the evenings on Sundays, they start their long bumper-to-bumper drive back on the highways. Nobody seems in a hurry.
The Australian government also encourages its people to have more relaxation after work. Sometimes, certain kind of financial help is distributed to people going on holidays and public holidays are purposely set on Monday or Friday so that Australians may have a longer weekend for enjoyment. They think people can work better only after they get a full relaxation. And it grows out of this idea that relaxation comes the top priority(优先权)for enjoyment in Australia.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem (生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna (稀树草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore settingthe terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
【1】What is the passage mainly about?
A.Disappearance of African elephants.
B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C.The effect of African elephants' search for food.
D.The eating habit of African elephants.
【2】What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?
A.Fixing the time. B.Worsening the state.
C.Improving the quality. D.Deciding the conditions.
【3】What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A.They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B.They provide food mainly for African elephants.
C.They are home to many endangered animals.
D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
【4】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The African elephant is the largest animal on earth.
B.African elephants have 300 pounds of plants every day, including small trees and underbushes.
C.The African elephant is in a way the builder of the environment like other land animals.
D.If the African elephant disappears, the whole ecosystem won't be affected.
