The Cariwest Festival
It is one of Edmonton’s most colourful summer festivals! It’s three days of fun as Caribbean Canadians share their music, cuisine and carnival culture! Local performers bring you amazing dance, music and fun. Bring Cariwest atmospheres into your home this year with these amazing online events.

Indigenous(本土的)Festival
The annual Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival (SSIF) in Edmonton has done a wonderful job to make their annual off-line festival a number of online events this year because of COVID-19. The events take place from June 1—21. SSIF has partnered with BMO to provide Education Days for students to learn together about Indigenous history. These classes for which only a small fee will be charged include art workshops, book readings and museum tours.

Just 45 minutes from the heart of downtown Edmonton is the town of Stony Plain that works hard to keep ties to its agricultural background, and here you’ll see old-styled lamp posts and historical wall paintings with a long history everywhere. It’s also the site of Western Canada’s largest bluegrass festival, which has been a main attraction for more than 25 years and in July every year draws in all the big names, including Grammy winners.

You like poetry, music, art and cowboys? Then you can’t miss it. Heading into its 24th year, Cowboy Festival in Stony Plain in August is a showcase of the cowboy life. The events include good old-fashioned BBQ meals and some other entertainment.

Young Chinese are increasingly making their voices heard and influencing world opinion as they take on more important roles in international organizations and global projects. Take, for example, singer and actor Karry Wang. At a ceremony in Beijing in April, he was made the national goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme by Eric Solheim, the organization’s director.
“The youth are no longer merely onlookers when it comes to environmental action, nor should they be. I will spare no effort to do everything I can to take care of our Earth, and I invite everyone to join me in taking a wave of positive action,” Wang said in his speech in the appointment ceremony. In 2016, Wang widely shared the online Wild for Life campaign, which gained 400 million views. A year later, he publicly spoke out on the urgent need to protect endangered wildlife, calling the animals the “superstars of the planet.”
Beyond drawing attention to wildlife, he called on his followers to formally promise to reduce their electronic waste by following his post to stress the issue on the Internet. Within 24 hours, his post was followed 1.67 million times and more than 400,000 followers had promised to reduce the electronic waste.
“Our actions will soon be the tool of changing the world,” Wang says, calling on the younger generation in China and around the world to raise their awareness of environmental issues.
Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment says, “It is inspiring to see the strong and determined voice of Chinese youth when it comes to the environment. When young people make up their minds to change, it is incredible to see the great things that can be achieved. We are very excited to work with Wang Junkai to create even more awareness about the environmental problems and solutions for these times.”
According to the UN report Youth in the Core of Sustainability in Asia Pacific published in March 2016, young people’s participation will help achieve the sustainable development goals in the Asia-Pacific region set for 2030.
Besides Wang, other UNEP goodwill ambassadors include actress Li Bingbing, actor Li Chen, Ellie Goulding, Bertrand Piccard and many famous people from all walks of life both from China and abroad.

Widespread descriptions of animals in pop culture could actually be hurting the animals’ survival chances in the wild, new research suggests.
Franck Courchamp of the University of Paris-Sud was interested in the idea of “appeal”in animals. He wanted to know: What species do people consider appealing? And what are the influences of being appealing on populations in the wild?
In a research published this month, Courchamp and other researchers list the top 20 appealing species. Most of the animals identified as appealing are large mammals living on land. Coming in first place were tigers, followed by lions, elephants, giraffes, panthers, pandas, cheetahs, polar bears, wolves, and gorillas. However, at least half of the interviewees didn’t realize that five of the top ten most appealing species are threatened. It is paradoxical that we haven’t been able to protect the species we care about the most.
The study also found that we are flooded with images of these creatures, even as they are becoming fewer in the wild. The study suggests that too much of imagination might be creating a “virtual(虚拟的) population” of the animals in peoples’ minds, making them believe there are far more individuals in the wild than is exact.
The study authors suggest that companies who benefit from the use of these images should set aside a small percentage of their profits for protection efforts and informational campaigns. “That would be not only something fair, but that would be something that could bring a win-win situation for them,” Courchamp says. It could bring them positive public relation, for example. Besides, if a company’s mascot(吉祥物) goes extinct, that could hurt them from a marketing point, Courchamp says. But not enough companies are “truly concerned about the protection of the species that they work on,” he adds.
【1】It can be inferred that the widespread images of animals in pop culture ________.
A.leads people to forget the less appealing animals
B.makes a false impression of the animals’ real situation
C.raises people’s wildlife protection attention and efforts
D.brings a win-win situation for both animals and companies
【2】What does the writer mean by saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A.It is important to protect these endangered species.
B.It is natural to regard the large mammals as attractive.
C.It is terrible that the species are dying out at an alarming speed.
D.It is strange that people’s thoughts contrast with their behaviors.
【3】Courchamp lists the companies’ responsibilities and their advantages by ________.
A.giving examples B.making definition
C.making comparisons D.using numbers
【4】What’s Courchamp’s attitude to the companies benefiting from animal images?
A.Neutral. B.Supportive.
C.Dissatisfied. D.Positive.

We have to make certain our limited money is well spent. But what should we spend our money on? A 20-year study conducted by Dr. Gilovich, a professor at Cormell University, reached a powerful and direct conclusion: don’t spend your money on things.
The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide peters out. We get used to new belongings, and what once seemed exciting quickly becomes normal. We keep raising the bar and always look for an even better one. Belongings, by their nature, cause comparisons. We buy a new car and are thrilled with it until a friend buys a better one—and there’s always someone with a better one. Most of us usually assume that the happiness we get from buying something will last as long as the thing itself. It seems intuitive(直觉的) that spending money on something we can see, hear, and touch on a lasting basis delivers the best value. But it’s not the case at all.
Gilovich has found that experiences deliver more-lasting happiness than things. Experiences become a part of our identity. Everyone’s experience is unique. We are not our belongings, but we are the total of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been to. “Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods,” said Gilovich. “You can really like your material goods. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.”
Besides, we don’t compare experiences in the same way that we compare things. It’s hard to measure the relative value of any two experiences, which makes them that much more enjoyable. And expectation of an experience causes excitement and enjoyment, while expectation of acquiring some goods causes impatience. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning, all the way through to the memories you keep. The temporary happiness achieved by buying things can be regarded as “puddles(水坑) of pleasure.” In other words, that kind of happiness dies away and leaves us wanting more. Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that remain are what matter most.
【1】Which one can replace the underlined phrase “peters out” ?
A.is too little B.disappears slowly C.is not real D.costs too much
【2】What does Gilovich think of experiences?
A.Experiences deliver less-lasting happiness than things.
B.Experiences can exist in our memory forever.
C.We are only a part of our experiences.
D.Our experiences are what separate us from others.
【3】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Experiences can be compared with each other.
B.Expecting an experience increases our feeling of anxiety.
C.People are more likely to be impatient when buying things.
D.Spiritual wealth is the most valuable for us.
【4】Which is the main idea of the passage?
A.How can we gain happiness with money?
B.How can we make happiness last long?
C.Why should we spend money on experiences instead of things?
D.Why do experiences achieve more lasting happiness than things?

With modern technology becoming popular, much written communication tends to focus on the keyboard, but handwriting is still a necessary and important skill. 【1】 Here are some tips for you to improve your handwriting.
Examine Your Handwriting. 【2】 Look through your writing to decide what makes it difficult to read or what makes it unattractive. Perhaps you write your letters too small. Check on spacing of letters and words, and proper formation of letters. If your letters are small, put more effort into writing larger letters. If you are stuck by certain letters, practice those letters separately and within words.
Write Correctly. Positioning and technique play a role in how your handwriting looks. Hold the pen between your thumb and first two fingers so that it rests against your fingers. Hold it firmly enough to control the tip but not so hard that it hurts your fingers. Lighter pressure on the paper helps you create smooth lines and focus on your letter formation. 【3】
【4】 Letters are formed from several basic strokes(笔画). Practice those strokes separately to get your hand used to forming them. Strokes found in letters include vertical lines, horizontal lines, and circles. Build on those to practice specific letters.
Write for a Purpose. Teach young children handwriting in meaningful contexts. Use that same idea by picking up a pen to write lists and notes by hand instead of typing. Keep a journal daily with slow, correct strokes. 【5】 These true and sincere writing opportunities make the practice meaningful.
A.Build on Basics.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Focus on improving your correctness instead of speed.
D.Writing at a slower speed also helps you focus on letter formation.
E.Put a handwritten letter in the mail to surprise a friend or a relative.
F.Handwriting requires your brain, eyes and hands to work together to form letters.
G.Before you can improve your handwriting, you need to know where your problem lies.

I had no choice but prepare for it, though. The hardest part was my oral presentation from my memory, as reading from the paper wasn’t allowed. The real moment began with when I stood on the platform with my legs shook and my mind blank. And my listeners were waiting patient. Gradually, I found me back, giving my speech at last.
