Four of the Most Magical Movies from Your Childhood
Whether it was the enchanting characters, the memorable scenes or simply because it was the first film mum or dad took you to, these are the movies that have lelt the most lasting impressions over the decades.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
“I loved it for two reasons. First, it showed a wonderful, loving extended family. I was fascinated by their kitchen setting and the little corner where the boy Charlie slept. Second, inside the chocolate factory was what all children dreamed of. The whole movie transported me from my childhood worries into a fairyland world.” —Margaret McKee
Dumbo
“For a kid who often felt like he didn’t fit in, and wasn’t good at anything, it was magical to see Dumbo discover his talent and become loved and celebrated.” —Lorraine Cormack
“I loved Dumbo as it showed those who are bullied can win if they believe they can.” — Mary Madigan
The Never Ending Story
“It has to be the most magical movie from my era. The story has everything a young kid can ask for: a great story, a mythical flying dog and an interesting ending. Our family continue to watch it today.” —Aaron Elliott
The Sound of Music
“When I was young, movies were a treat, with lollies, friends and a canvas seat. There was a special one that I did adore, and many times I’ve gone back for more. Just over a year ago I gave myself a challenge: give up spending on all but the essentials for a whole year. It hasn’t always been easy, but a year on I am wealthier and wiser. Embarrassingly, I have also realized just how much money I’ve wasted through mindless shopping and in the pubs and restaurants.
Free of any financial worries, I was spending without thinking. Stuck in a cycle of consumerism, I was struggling in vain to spend my way to happiness. Giving up spending for a year was an extreme approach, but I wanted to taste extreme frugality, shake up my spending patterns and overpay my mortgage instead of shopping. I could continue to pay my bills, including mortgages, broadband, phone bill, charity donations, life insurances, money to help my family and basic groceries.
It was not easy, especially in the first few months. There were lows, such as when I missed my favourite jazz concerts and hit films. There have also been some awkward moments when I’ve turned up to a friend’s house for dinner empty-handed. I did a lot of washing up at my friends’ houses in return this year.
I did find new ways to live, however. Using sites such as Eventbrite I have been to film screenings, wine tasting evenings and theatre productions for free. Living in London I have a wealth of free cultural activities on my doorstep and I’ve been to more art exhibitions this year than ever before. I even managed a free holiday, cycling the Suffolk and Norfolk coast and camping on beaches. It’s something I’d never done before and probably wouldn’t have, were it not for the challenge.
The last 12 months have taught me what things I really need. I can frankly say I’m happier now. I’ve gained confidence and skills, done things and met lovely people I wouldn’t have otherwise done or met.

Winters were bitterly cold in my memory. You had to bundle up just to keep warm when you went outside. You were often cold, wet, slip on the ice, and you’d arrive home to an ice-cold house. And that would mean turning on the heating and waiting. It’s a miracle you didn’t get cold to the bone.
Fortunately, things don’t have to be so challenging any more. Technology, engineering and design have advanced, giving us new solutions to old problems. It means dealing with winter needn’t be like skating on thin ice.
With a smart thermostat (温度自动调节器), our homes can be warm when we need them to be. Many models feature smartphone apps that allow you to control temperature remotely, so we can warm up the house before we arrive home. According to techradar.com, Tado’s model features voice control, while the Nest “knows” your habits and automatically heats the home for you.
Clothes have been given an upgrade, too. Electronic thermal jackets, sweaters and coats heat up when you turn them on. At the touch of a button, or through an app on our phones, the clothing produces heat from the equipment placed inside. Many models offer three levels of heating which stay warm for over 12 hours.
Finally, there is the clothing for the head, Beanies and Earmuff, which feature speakers included in the fabric using Bluetooth technology so we can listen to our favourite music or, in some cases, have a phone call using the in-built microphone. All keep the head warm while avoiding a cold.
For many, the thought of winter used to be enough to make their blood run cold. But using technology, life needn’t freeze up. With the right solutions, there’s no reason why winter can’t be really, really cool.
【1】What do the underlined words “bundle up” mean in Para.1?
A.Fix an air conditioner. B.Take a hot bath.
C.Dress up. D.Put on more clothes.
【2】How does electronic thermal clothing work?
A.It needs to be warmed up before being used.
B.The equipment placed inside the clothing produces heat.
C.The thermostat heat up automatically when the temperature is low.
D.It keeps warm for over 12 hours after being charged for an hour.
【3】Which of the following is NOT true?
A.With technology, it takes only half an hour to warm up houses after users arrive home .
B.Tado’s model can be controlled by saying something to it.
C.With the in-built microphone, Beanies and Earmuffs users can have a phone call.
D.Bluetooth technology is used in the clothing for the head.
【4】What’s the best title of this passage?
A.A Smart Thermostat B.Ways of keeping warm
C.A Modern winter D.An unpleasant winter

These days scientists have been looking beyond diet and lifestyle to genetic factors when it comes to long life. The small village of Molochio in Calabria, Italy, has a population of about 2,000. And of these, there are at least eight people over a hundred years old. Researchers ask people about the secret of their long life. The answer is mainly to do with diet and is almost always the same, “I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables.” “A little bit, but of everything.” “No smoking, no drinking.”
Eric Topol is one researcher who questions the received wisdom, saying,“ There must be genes that explain why some people are protected from the harmful genes that affect the aging process.”
In one small region, Ecuador, there are a number of people with a genetic condition called Laron syndrome (综合症), which limits a person’s growth to a little more than a meter, but seems to protect them against cancer. Those with Laron syndrome live longer than the rest of their families. Meanwhile, on the Hawaian island of Oahu, there’s a completely separate group of Japanese-American men who are particularly long-lived. And it turns out that they have a variant (变异) of the same gene as the Laron syndrome group.
Back in Calabria, scientists have been trying to work out exactly how much of the local longevity (长寿) is due to genetics and how much to environmental factors. Researchers built the family trees of the 100-year-old people. They looked at family information from the 19th century to today. They conclude that there are genetic factors that give health benefits to the men—a surprising result because generally, in Europe, women over a hundred years old outnumber (超过) men by five to one.
【1】What can we learn about the research into the long life?
A.It has found out new factors recently.
B.It looks mainly at people’s diet.
C.It has denied traditional ideas on longevity.
D.It has linked people’s lifestyles to their genes.
【2】What does Eric Topol think of the diet for a long and healthy life?
A.It is reasonable. B.It is doubtful.
C.It is worth studying. D.It is common sense.
【3】Why are the scientists interested in Laron syndrome?
A.It affects the rest of a family. B.It helps people grow healthily.
C.It is hard to cure. D.It is connected with long life.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph about the research into long life in Calabria?
A.The idea of genes isn’t supported.
B.More women lives longer than men.
C.Genes and environment work equally.
D.There is an unexpected longevity pattern.

Sometimes feeling accepted and liked comes more easily when you do something for others. 【3】 Teach a child in reading. Take notes for a disabled classmate. You might be surprised at the connections you make after reaching out in these ways.
【4】 Loneliness is an absence of quality friendships, not of a particular quantity of friends. That’s why it’s important to know how to select a friend. The best friendships are those based on similar values and attitudes.
You get what you expect, so expect the best. If you expect others to be friendly, you will behave in similar ways.
