A local grocery store here has been remodelled and not a single one of the changes is good for those of us who shop there. The grocery aisles have been rearranged with some going in one direction and others going in another. The aisles have been pushed closer together, making it harder to get through them. It seems like all of these changes have been for the purpose of slowing the shoppers down so they will make more impulse buys. As I walked through the store today, no one was smiling and everyone was unhappy about it.
The change that bothered me the most, however, was in the check-out aisles. Only a few cashiers were left working with huge sections changed into self-scanning check-outs. It saddened me to see this. I knew that people were probably going to lose their jobs because of this change. I got in a cashier aisle and patiently waited while I saw some other people struggling to figure out how the self-scanning machines worked. I swore at that moment never to use one myself even if I had to wait longer every time I shopped there.
When I finally arrived at the front of the aisle, I saw the cashier was someone I knew. I greeted her with a smile. She smiled back with warmth and kindness that touched my soul. We chatted happily while she scanned and bagged up my groceries. I felt a friendship and a connection with her that warmed my heart. I wished her well before I left.
Machines can do a lot for us, but there are many things they can't do. They can't smile or love. Only we can do that. It is time that we should realize that profits aren't more important than people and that machines aren't more important than us. It is time that we should learn that loving each other and this world is what life is all about.
【1】What may account for the store's changes?
A.To make more profits. B.To satisfy the shoppers.
C.To offer more products. D.To make shopping easier.
【2】What's the result of the use of self-scanning machines according to the author?
A.It will attract more customers. B.It has reduced the cashiers' burden.
C.It has brought shopper more convenience. D.It will make many people unemployed.
【3】How did the author feel when he met the cashier?
A.Calm. B.Glad. C.Angry. D.Surprised.
【4】What's the best title for the text?
A.Machines or Us? B.Why Use Machines?
C.Are Changes Necessary? D.How Does the World Change?

It is among nature’s greatest spectacles. Each year, thousands of sea turtle mothers clamber ashore, dig into the sand to lay their eggs, and then return to the sea. After being incubated(孵)for around two months, the eggs hatch and the tiny turtles strive to reach the water.
Approximately 90 percent of the sea turtle nesting in the United States happens on Florida's beaches , according to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, a Gainesville-based research and conservation organization. During the nesting season, which runs from March through October, the sands are normally crowded with humans. However, this year the coronavirus pandemic severely reduced travel and required some states to close their beaches for weeks. While this sounded disappointing to the visitors, it may have been a boon to the sea turtles.
For turtle mothers, there can be " false crawls" , in which a female encounters a distraction between the water and a potential nesting site. The crowded beaches would interrupt the sea turtles' plan, sending them back to the ocean without laying eggs.
“ In terms of a successful rate of nesting, we actually did find a significant difference during the beach closures and then after," says Justin Perrault, director of the organization, “We have observed approximately 17,000 nests along Juno, Jupiter-Carlin, and Tequesta beaches this year. During the closures, loggerheads, one of the commonly seen turtles on Florida's beach, successfully nested 61 percent. When the beaches reopened, that number dropped to 46 percent. ”
Jimena Gutierrrez, a Sea Turtle Conservancy biologist also expresses her opinion, “ Normally the turtles are conserved because we have a lot of people coming to see them. With fewer tourism dollars supporting local workers, we are worried about the conservationists as well as the turtles. But maybe in the long run, we will see good numbers because there is less boat traffic in the ocean.
【1】What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Cure. B.Option.
C.Blessing. D.Challenge.
【2】What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?
A.Closures should be expanded for turtles, nesting.
B.This year has witnessed the highest nest rate in history.
C.The nest rate has remained steady over the whole nesting season.
D.Less human disturbance has led to more successful nesting.
【3】How does Jimena's opinion sound?
A.Anxious. B.Ambiguous. C.Indifferent. D.Objective.
【4】Where can we probably read this article?
A.www. sealifeconservation. com. B.www. worldissues. com.
C.www. scienceforstudents. com. D.www. newsflash. com.

If one more person talks about the benefits of mindfulness, I will throw cabbage at them. Just kidding. But I do have lots of cabbage happily rotting away in my, kitchen thanks to the wellness obsession(着迷) that failed to keep my attention. This is a symptom of a phenomenon known as “wellness tiredness”.
Wellness is seriously big business with a worth of $3.72 trillion and a healthy annual growth of 14 percent. To satisfy this consuming desire, brands of super foods and various exercise classes crowd in. “The problem with all this constantly changing information on what to eat or which exercise class to take is that people begin to form distorted(扭曲的) mindsets towards the idea of a healthy lifestyle,” explains Dr Bijal, a psychologist at Nightingale Hospital. “The least harmful result of a distorted mindset will be confusion. The most harmful would be serious physical and mental disorders like extreme dieting or over-exercising.”
It’s little wonder that many people are beginning to reject the idea of wellness and the lifestyle it advocates. “I can’t tell you the number of wellness accounts I’ve unfollowed on Instagram,” one fitness-enthusiast friend tells me. When I ask her why, she tells me that the public pursuit(追求) of wellness has reached “the eye-roll stage”. Meanwhile, sales of fitness trackers and wearable wellness things have dropped sharply.
Speaking of gym culture, which offers classes like Hula Hoop and Yoga, it’s also beginning to show signs that people are returning to more conventional forms of exercise-some that wouldn’t look out of place on a school timetable.
The whole point of wellness is that it should become such an everyday thing that you forget about seeking it. Living a healthy lifestyle becomes a given rather than something singled out as impressive and worth applauding. Now, more people are starting to cycle to and from work, swim on lunch breaks and even try to buy old school exercise bikes.
【1】What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.The wellness business costs people a great deal of money.
B.People are faced with too many food and exercise choices.
C.Distorted mindsets to wellness cause harmful consequences.
D.The wellness industry has been developing at a steady speed.
【2】Why is the author’s friend mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To inform us wearable wellness things are not popular.
B.To advocate the idea of wellness and a healthy lifestyle.
C.To tell us that online wellness accounts are hard to follow.
D.To show the public’s unfavorable attitude to wellness obsession.
【3】Why are people starting to return to traditional forms of exercise?
A.Sports such as cycling are more impressive.
B.People are treating wellness as an everyday thing.
C.Classes like Hula Hoop and Yoga are too expensive.
D.People have come to know wellness is not so necessary.
【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text r?
A.The Importance of Living a Healthy Lifestyle
B.Are You Suffering from Wellness Tiredness?
C.The Benefits of Mindfulness in Wellness Industry
D.What is the Real Meaning of Wellness Obsession?

You wear your mask to minimize your risk of Covid-19. But as you walk in a supermarket, you approach someone who looks familiar. To avoid an awkward exchange, you flash them a friendly smile. It's not until you pass that you remember: Your smile was hidden behind a mask. 【1】 But you can adjust and enhance your communication by focusing on some of the other pieces that aren't hidden behind a mask.
Do remember the face isn't totally covered. Happiness, sadness, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. But when part of the face is masked, it becomes more difficult to recognize them. 【2】 If you want to increase understanding with a masked individual, you should look them in the eyes. Bear in mind, eye contact can also make you appear more intelligent and trustworthy.
We communicate through body language. Learning how people use their bodies to convey emotion may help reduce the uncertainty you feel when communicating with someone in a mask. 【3】 When engaged in a conversation, you can appear more attentive by turning your body toward the individual.
【4】 It's not just what you say but how you say it that matters. Along with the actual words, you also use volume, tone and pauses to convey your message. For instance, a lower-pitched whisper may denote sadness or insecurity, whereas a higher-pitched shout could show anger or intensity. Chances are that anyone listening to you could easily identify your emotions without even seeing you. If you feel the need to speak louder, just be aware that raising your voice can alter the message you are trying to send. Changing the tone of your voice can change the whole conversation. 【5】
A.Become aware of your own body language, too.
B.So instead of increasing volume, try talking clearly.
C.Without question, masks have disturbed social communication.
D.Wearing a mask makes you feel more distracted and self-conscious.
