When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, and then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl.”, she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw tears in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.

When I learned that my 71-year-old mother was playing Scrabble—a word game—against herself, I knew I had to do something. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against.
I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 15 years to persuade her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and delivered it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure in the world of computers.
It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’d taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She had been the one teaching me all my life: to cook and sew, to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back.
It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing. This proved to be a bigger challenge to her, so I gave her some homework. I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces.
“Are you this demanding with your kindergarten pupils?” she asked.
“No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.”
My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy. For as long as I can remember, any time I called, my mother would answer. Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years.
【1】Why did the author decide to give her mother a computer?
A.To help her through the bad times.
B.To make her life more enjoyable.
C.To support her in doing her homework.
D.To let her have more chances to write letters.
【2】What does the author do according to the text?
A.She is a teacher. B.She is a cook.
C.She is a housewife. D.She is a computer engineer.
【3】Why did the author ask her mother to write her a letter?
A.To keep in touch with her mother.
B.To free her mother from heavy housework.
C.To practice what her mother had learned.
D.To prevent her mother from using the telephone.
【4】What happened to the author’s father after the computer was brought home?
A.He played even more games. B.He became skilled at it.
C.He lost interest in cooking. D.He took more phone calls.

According to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep are able to recognize human faces from photographs.
The farm animals, which are social and have large brains, were previously known to be able to recognize one another, as well as familiar humans. However, their ability to recognize human faces from photos alone is novel (新奇的).
The recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Royal Society: Open Science, shows the woolly creatures could be trained to recognize still images of human faces, including those of former President Barack Obama and actress Emma Watson.
First, the sheep were trained to get close to certain images by being given food rewards. Later, they were able to recognize the images for which they had been rewarded. The sheep could even recognize images of faces shown at an angle.
“Anyone who has spent time working with sheep will know that they are smart, individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers,” said Professor Jenny Morton, who led the Cambridge study. “We’ve shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities, comparable with those of humans and monkeys.”
Recognizing faces is one of the most important social skills for human beings, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington’s disease, have a bad effect on this ability.
“Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington's disease, which develop over a long time and influence cognitive (认知的) abilities. Our study gives us another way to study how these abilities change.” Morton said.
【1】According to the new research, what’s unusual about sheep?
A.They have large brains.
B.They can recognize their owners.
C.They can recognize human faces from photographs.
D.They know the differences between animals and humans.
【2】How did the researchers train the sheep?
A.By giving food rewards.
B.By showing photos of famous people.
C.By guiding them to follow their handlers.
D.By showing photos of humans and monkeys by turns.
【3】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Sheep are more clever than monkeys.
B.The new discovery is helpful to study cognitive ability changes.
C.The sheep’s face-recognition ability may prevent brain disorders.
D.The face-recognition ability is the most important skill for sheep.
【4】What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.It discusses the life of sheep.
B.It’s about a wonderful scientist.
C.It tells us a new discovery about sheep.
D.It shows how sheep recognize human faces.

Some people like modern art, while others say that it is rubbish. But a cleaner who works in the Tate Britain Gallery in London isn’t able to tell the difference. The woman, whose name isn’t known, mistook a work of art by the German painter Gustav Metzger for a bag of rubbish, and threw it out with other bags. The plastic bag, which contained pieces of paper and cardboard, was later recovered outside the gallery, but the artist thought that it was too badly damaged to be put on show again, and so he found another bag. 78-year-old Mr. Metzger explained that the exhibit, which he said was a copy of a similar work he had created in 1960, was meant to show that all art is temporary (暂时的).
Embarrassed officials at the museum said that they had had to call a meeting with cleaners to explain which things should not be touched. They would not say whether Mr. Metzger would be paid for the incident. However, to make absolutely sure the same thing would not happen again, they decided to cover Mr. Metzger’s work every evening with a coloured cloth. In this way cleaners arriving after the gallery had closed to the general public would realize that they should not touch it.
This is not the first time that museum cleaners have had trouble distinguishing exhibits from rubbish. In 2001, in another London gallery, a cleaner threw away a work by the well-known British artist Damien Hirst. It was an arrangement of empty beer bottles, coffee cups, and ashtrays (烟灰缸), which were meant to show the disorder in the life of an artist.
However, cleaners don’t always throw things away—sometimes they clean them! This was the case with a dirty bath, which was on show in a gallery in Germany. Without asking what the bath was doing in the gallery, the cleaner simply cleaned it.
【1】The woman cleaner threw away the plastic bag because__________.
A.the plastic bag was badly damaged
B.she didn’t recognize it was a work of art
C.she hated modern art and considered it rubbish
D.The exhibit on show was taken the place of by another bag
【2】The underlined word “distinguishing” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_______”.
A.collecting B.replacing C.telling D.exchanging
【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Mr Metzger would be paid some money for the incident.
B.Tate British Gallery will be closed to avoid the same mistake.
C.Artists often use rubbish to show how content they feel with life.
D.More than one cleaner threw away works of art in galleries.
【4】What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Cleaner Mistakes Modern Art for Rubbish B.Good Cleaners Make Mistakes
C.Damaged Modern Art Works D.Dangerous Galleries and Cleaners

Thousands of people living in the Chinese capital will celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year by heading for the ski resorts. Never mind that Beijing’s dry weather seldom produces snow. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this new popularity.
Since Beijing’s first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr. Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe. In recent years ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway areas of the country and can’t really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.
Beijing’s skiing popularity is partly a result of the recent increase in private cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital’s suburbs (郊区), which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people. According to Mr. Wei, about 40% of the visitors to his resort come in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government offices.
The problem is making money. Starting ski resorts requires quite a lot of money: hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines, making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers. The ski resort where Mr. Wei works cost nearly $4 million to set up. And, as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.
【1】What does this text mainly talk about?
A.Convenience for skiers brought about by private cars.
B.A sudden increase of ski training classes in Beijing.
C.Things to be considered when starting a ski resort.
D.Skiing as a new way of enjoying one’s spare time.
【2】Why are some Chinese likely to go skiing in Europe?
A.To visit more ski areas. B.For better services and equipment.
C.For a large collection of ski suits. D.To ski on natural snow.

A.transport to ski resorts
B.production of family cars
C.business of providing spare time enjoyments
D.part-time work for people living in the suburbs
【4】What is the main problem in running a ski resort?
A.The price of the ski training classes.

D.Difficulty in making money.
