I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010. We were in the fallout of the recession (经济衰退). She said a polite “no”. That didn’t stop me. I drew the piano keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons. I still remember the first one. I was moved by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper. One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in shock. My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts (选拔) were difficult. Some of the questions includes an estimation (评价) of the composer (作曲家) or when it was written. However, I was finally offered a place. At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and bought my first piano. When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School in London. With their school still closed and boredom coming in, a group of teenagers decided to do something meaningful. Since April, students from Lake Highland Preparatory School in Florida, US, launched a free online tutoring service to help younger students with their schoolwork. Since then, Orlando Student Tutoring has lined up about 50 students, all of them children doing assignments from home. Their services, using Zoom, are open to any student who is interested. They’ve received signups from across central Florida and, much to their surprise, requests from students in other states such as California and Pennsylvania. “We’ve been very happy to actually help,” said Jeffrey Zhou, 17. “I didn’t expect we’d get as many students as we did.” The core group of tutors are members of Lake Highland’s robotics club. “We were all just so bored,” said Pavan Kanumalla, 17, who helped get the tutoring program running. Knowing the pandemic(流行病) had done real damage to many others, they were “feeling guilty about being bored in quarantine (隔离期),” he said. While not sure what to do at first, the group settled on tutoring and was soon designing a website and lining up other students to serve as tutors. “We’re just trying to have the biggest influence we can,” Kanumalla said. Brooks Ellson, 17, also joined in as a tutor. He helped a third grader who needed help with math, saying it felt good “just to offer something, to give back.” And, he admitted, it was something to help fill the long days. While it’s no surprise that heavy drinking comes with health problems, women will experience more serious symptoms(症状) from alcohol - including an increased risk of alcohol-related death, according to a new study. The researchers found that’s even more alarming considering the number of women who are drinking alcohol too much is on the rise, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Even though men are not only more likely to drink alcohol but also more of it, alcohol hits women harder. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that “gender differences in body structure and chemistry cause women to take in more alcohol, and take longer to metabolize and remove it from their bodies,” adding, “These differences also make it more likely that drinking will cause long-term health problems in women than men.” Heavy drinking also impacts heart health. The CDC states that studies show women who drink overmore have a higher risk of damaging the heart muscle than men. Keith Humphreys, a professor studying alcohol drinking at Stanford University explains that, one of the reasons why alcohol has a more effect on women is because, on average, they weigh less than men. According to the NIAAA, “Alcohol resides predominantly in body water, and, women have less water in their bodies than men. This means that after a woman and a man of the same weight drink the same amount of alcohol, the woman’s blood alcohol concentration will tend to be higher, putting her at greater risk for harm.”But it’s not just about size. Research shows women also have fewer Alcohol Dehydrogenase Enzymes(脱氢酶), which help the body metabolize alcohol.
