A ten-year-old from Howell, Michigan is being praised as a hero thanks to his persistence (坚持) that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.
That’s when the young boy noticed an open garage (车库) and a figure (身影) that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.
Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny’s hunch (直觉).Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. The 80-year-old had fallen down on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.
Dawn rushed home to get her husband to help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they waited for the ambulance (救护车) to arrive. W e all love bank holidays. In the UK, we only get eight bank holidays in one year, and at least five of those occur around Christmas time and Easter time! A bank holiday is a British English term. This is an official day that is decided by the government, when banks, shops and offices close for the day even though it’s a weekday—usually a Monday, and a lot of people have a day off work.
Bank holidays are different in Colombia—firstly, they are called “festivos”. There are twenty festivos for the whole country in one year! In Britain ,people get more holiday allowance(津贴)than Colombians but fewer bank holidays. There can be even more festivos in Colombia, depending on which region of Colombia you live in. This is because different regions have their own holidays. For example, some regions have a patron saint(守护神) in their region, so they have an extra festivo to celebrate that saint.
However, there are some days that are national holidays for historical reasons. There is an Independence Day celebration on July 20 every year. This is just like Bastille Day in France on July 14, or Independence Day in the United States on July 4. Other important festivos in Colombia are :Labour Day, on May 1, and Columbus Day on October 12. Columbus Day is a historical bank holiday that almost every county on the continent of America celebrates. This includes Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Mexico and the United States. It is a memorialization of the day that the Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus, first reached land on the continent in the year 1492. Many people criticize this day and say it is not something to celebrate because of the way Columbus and his teams treated the people that were already living there.
【1】What is a “bank holida” according to the text?
A. An official nationwide vacation.
B. A holiday only for the bank staff.
C. A British traditional religion festival.
D. A celebration for Christmas and Easter.
【2】What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Colombia and Britain have the same number of festivos.
B. All Colombians have the same number of festivos.
C. Colombians have less holiday allowance than British people.
D. People in most regions celebrate a patron saint.
【3】Why do many Americans refuse to celebrate Columbus Day ?
A. Because Columbus wasn’t an American at all.
B. Because Columbus once treated the locals badly.
C. Because it wasn’t Columbus that found America first.
D. Because Columbus didn’t live in the continent of America.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A. A British English term.
B. Bank holidays in Colombia.
C. Important festivos in America.
D. Different bank holidays in the world.

People generally like to pick out the best-looking fruits and vegetables when shopping for produce, but Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and imperfect produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.
A trial run of the ugly food line, named "Naturally Imperfect", began with only apples and tomatoes
to choose from. Consumer(消费者) demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more ugly vegetables and fruit like onions and mushrooms.
All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let abnormal produce go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he was right, considering how popular the line has become.
"It really went well beyond our expectation," Branson said. "I think it really spoke to the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some Choices."
Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin(外皮) deep, and they also recognize that they get the same flavor and nutritional (营养的) benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response to the offering of apples and potatoes showed the opportunity to expand the line and offer more choices at a greater price to Canadian families.
"If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won't look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store”, said Branson. “ And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if somebody were to take a NO Name Naturally Imperfect apple, put it right beside a No. 1 apple, close his eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”
【1】Loblaws is different from other supermarkets because_______.
A.more fruits are offered at lower prices
B.normal-looking produce is banned there
C.only apples and potatoes are sold every day
D.imperfect produce is sold at lower prices there
【2】According to Paragraph 3, Branson's program _______.
A.prevents people from wasting their food
B.teaches food producers how to grow
C.happens to be a win-win arrangement
D.enables consumers to eat more fresh produce
【3】What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Canadians are used to eating perfect produce.
B.Customers' support helps the development of Loblaws.
C.Smart consumers know the importance of ugly produce.
D.Loblaws intends to improve customers' quality of life.
【4】What do Branson's words in the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Imperfect fruits are as tasty and nutritious as perfect ones.
B.We should eat imperfect apples with our eyes closed.
C.The world is usually full of imperfect things.
D.The fruits grown by ourselves are more nutritious than those in the store.
