I was eleven years old standing outside in just my underwear while I watched the house that I grew up in rapidly burn to the ground.
A few minutes earlier I had been in bed when a scream woke me up. My grandma’s bedroom was just next to mine and my elder brother’s. A fire had broken out there and awakened her. Hearing her scream, my elder brother jumped to action, running from room to room quickly to wake everyone in the house. However, before we could do anything, the fire had consumed (烧毁) the old and wooden house.
I stood there shivering (颤抖) while the fire destroyed my books, clothes, and toys. I watched helplessly while my Mom cried and my Dad sighed. I wondered what was going to happen to us now that we had lost all of our things. As I looked around, though, I realized something for the first time: What matters aren’t things. I saw my elder brother running across the swinging (摇摆的) bridge by our house to get help. I saw my eldest brother who was on crutches (拐棍) from an earlier accident standing unsteadily on one leg. I saw my grandma and dad wrapped in each other’s arms and my mum holding our little dog. I realized at that moment that we were all alive. Everything that was essential had survived the fire. Our lives would continue. We would survive without the “stuff” that was burning. We would all be around to love each other for many years to come. And that was all that mattered.
I still think of that fire at night. It helped me to become who I am today. It showed me for the very first time what is truly essential in life. It helped me to learn that the love we share is far more important than the things we possess.
Live your life then for the things that matter, not for the things you own. Love others. Let the fire inside of you make this world a warmer place. Let your soul shine bright.
【1】Who first found the house was on fire?
A.The author. B.The grandma.
C.The elder brother. D.A passer-by.

A.Important. B.Perfect.
C.Amazing. D.Unique.
【4】What could be the best title for the passage?
A.We all have each other B.The magic of a fire
C.Growing up with memory D.Ways to be a better man

Shoppers in the United States have many different retail stores(零售店)to choose from. You can shop at large department stores, furniture stores, jewelry stores, electronic equipment stores and many others. Another type of retail store—the catalog(目录) store, has become popular in the U.S.
Catalog stores offer much of the same goods as traditional retail stores. However, in these stores, shoppers select the items they wish to buy from large catalogs that are filled with photos and descriptions of all the different goods. The variety of products listed in the catalogs includes everything from baby clothing to video equipment and watches. The prices of these items are very low. In fact, the same items often cost more in other retail stores. And that’s the reason many people prefer to shop in catalog stores.
Catalog stores usually don't have many salespeople, so customers can’t expect to receive much help from them. Customers need to know about the features and the quality of the items they wish to buy before they shop, since there isn’t much opportunity to ask questions or examine the product in the store. However, catalog stores offer quality items at lower prices, and consumers seem to like this.
When shoppers go to a catalog store, if they are interested in purchasing an item, they need to follow this simple procedure.
●First, they go to a counter to find the store’s catalog.
●They look in the catalog to find the exact item they wish to buy.
●Then, they fill out an order form with the name of the item, the item number from the catalog, the price, and their name and address.
●After completing the form, the customer gives it to a salesperson, who checks to see if the item is in stock.
If the item is available, the stockroom sends it on a conveyor belt(输送带)to the pick-up counter. When the item arrives at the pick-up counter, the customer’s name is called, and the customer pays for the item.
The whole procedure usually takes ten to twenty minutes. If the item isn’t available, the salesperson can usually check the store’s computer and find out when it will be in stock again.

Earthquake rescue robots experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers said with these robots, rescuers would be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This kind of robot looking like a helicopter is a flying robot. It’s about 3 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions (功能) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake. It has a high-definition 360-degree panoramic (全景的) camera. It can work day and night and is also able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr Qi Juntong, a researcher at Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “The most important feature of this flying robot is that it doesn’t need a distant control. We just set the destination information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3, 000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.
This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go. As well as a detector (探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gases, a camera is placed in the 3-metre-long robot, which can work in the dark. Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot. With its 10-metre-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots would enter production and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as possible.

A.It has more functions. B.It has a unique shape.
C.It has more advanced cameras. D.It can work by itself once given the information.
【2】What does the underlined word “which “ in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.A camera. B.A detector. C.A rescuer. D.A supply.
【3】What can we learn about this robot from the text?
A.It is carried by the helicopter. B.It weighs about 30 kilos.
C.It is a machine with a length of 10 meters. D.It hasn’t been put into production so far.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.What the robot looks like. B.An introduction to a robot.
C.How the robot is made. D.Information about earthquakes.

Promises, promises
We make them and we break them, because some promises are very hard to keep. Here are the top five most common broken promises.
【1】
You always hear this from builders, repairmen, and electricians. But the truth is very different. They won’t come back until next week (or later). And you will probably need to phone them five times first.
I won’t tell anyone.
【2】“Don’t worry, ”we say, “your secret is safe with me.” But of course it isn’t. Research shows that everybody will always tell one other person the secret. Very soon the whole street will know!
This won’ t hurt.
A favourite phrase of doctors, dentists, and nurses. They usually say it just before they give you an injection (注射). 【3】The full phrase is: “This won’t hurt me(but it will probably hurt you a lot).”
I’ll write.
You make a new friend on holiday or on a bus journey, you swap e-mail addresses, and you make this promise.【4】“Oh dear!” you think—but then you remember that they didn’t write to you either!
I’ll pay you back tomorrow.
In Hamlet, Shakespeare told us never to borrow or lend money. He was right. When we lend people money they always make this promise, but then they forget. If we then ask for the money back, they think we are mean. 【5】
A.I’ll start very soon.
B.I’ll come back tomorrow.
C.But the phrase is not complete.
D.And at the time we really mean it.
E.If we don’t ask, we never get the money back.
F.We love hearing secrets and we happily make this promise.
G.Six months later you find an e-mail address on an old piece of paper.
