It is when Russell Lyons volunteered for the first time that he read "Goodnight Moon" to a class of San Diego preschoolers. And it wasn't reading-he'd memorized the book and was reciting it out loud. He was 4 then. Still, he said it felt good there, in front of the other kids, lending a hand. He wanted more of that feeling.
Thirteen years later, he's getting a lot of it. He's on a five-month road trip across America-not sightseeing, but volunteering.
The University City resident has spent time at an animal reserve in Utah, a women's shelter in St.Louis, a soup kitchen in New York, a retirement home in Tucson. This week he's in Los Angeles, at a program that supports disabled youth.
"I just like helping people and feeling that something I do is making a difference," he said. He resists the idea that his "Do Good Adventure" is all that unusual.Although it bothers him that the media often describe young people as lazy and self-centered, he still regards his trip as a chance to make a statement, too."About 55 percent of teens do volunteer work, higher than the rate for adults," he said, according to a study. "Not everybody knows that."
Of course, some teens do volunteer work because it looks impressive on their college applications.Lyons said he mentioned his trip on his applications. But charity work is a habit with him. Even before the cross-country trip, he was volunteering about 200 hours a year at various places. He's made sandwiches for homeless families in Washington D.C.and he's taught math to fifth-graders in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
He gets some of that drive from his mother, Lesley Lyons, who has been involved in nonprofits for much of her life. She was there when her son "read" to the preschoolers-a memory of hers "that will never go away".
【1】How did Russell Lyons start as a volunteer?
A.By reciting a story for preschoolers. B.By helping kids with homework.
C.By lending books to kids. D.By giving a lecture.
【2】Which do you think is Russell's statement?
A.Volunteering is an unusual adventure.
B.Young people are lazy and selfish.
C.Young people are willing to help others.
D.The rate of adults doing volunteer work is higher than that of teenagers.
【3】Why has Russell Lyons been doing volunteer work?
A.Because he thinks it is necessary for college applications.
B.Because he thinks it has become a natural part of his life.
C.Because he thinks he likes the feeling of being praised.
D.Because he thinks he ought to keep his promise to Mom.
【4】What does the last paragraph suggest?
A.Lesley Lyons is too busy to look after her son.
B.Children are always important to their parents.
C.Lesley Lyons almost earns no money all her life.
D.Russell Lyons is greatly influenced by his mother.

How much do consumers care about the carbon footprint of the products they buy? Would they care more if the goods were labeled with emissions(排放物) data? Does it matter at which stage in the lifecycle of a product the carbon is emitted? Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Policy and Decision Making offers a way to find out.
Study participants view a carbon footprint label as similar to labels that have appeared on some existing products. The label shows the carbon dioxide emissions connected with their production, transportation, usage and disposal(清理), thus showing the buyer the likely effect on climate change of buying a particular product.
In the first group of studies, the research team proved that carbon emissions and a carbon emissions label would indeed play a role in consumer product decisions, although not as great a role as price. In a second set of studies, the team found that emissions connected with usage were most important to consumers followed by the transportation and disposal stages. The carbon footprint of the producing process was considered less important to consumers than the other stages in the product's lifecycle because it is outside the consumer's control. That is, the participants felt they were less responsible for carbon emitted during producing process.Consumers value recycling a product, but the researchers found that, overall, the consumers would prefer producers to offset(补偿) carbon emissions rather than having to address the problem directly themselves.
Consumers are increasingly concerned with climate change problems, and already carbon labeling is appearing on some products."We find that participants not only take the carbon label into account when making product decisions, but they want detailed information on the label," the researchers explain. They suggest that companies should prepare for how carbon emissions labels might affect future consumer choice.
【1】Which of the following most affects consumer's choice?
A.Labels. B.Price.
C.Packaging. D.Carbon footprint.
【2】About the carbon dioxide emissions in the product's lifecycle, which stage do consumers care most?
A.Usage stage. B.Transportation stage.
C.Disposal stage. D.Producing stage.
【3】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "address"?
A.Look into. B.Point out.
C.Deal with. D.Run into.
【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Companies should take carbon emissions more seriously.
B.All products have been labeled with carbon emissions data.
C.Producers will attach less importance to carbon emissions labels.
D.Products labeled with carbon emissions data will have poor sales.

Nowadays technologies benefit us a lot in our daily life, but if not properly used, they can affect our health. The bed is supposed to be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.
Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep.Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin(褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.
When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning.People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion(分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.
The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed.Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note "Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk".
However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter(过滤) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.
【1】In Charles Czeisler's experiment, what were all the subjects asked to do?
A.Sit in a row and receive the strict tests.
B.Have their sleep patterns observed all night.
C.Read a paper book and an iPad at the same time.
D.Have their blood tested per hour during the trial.
【2】What were the iPad readers likely to do according to the third paragraph?
A.They felt less sleepy and tired in the day.
B.They fell asleep more easily after reading.
C.They became less energetic the next morning.
D.They had a lot more melatonin secretions.
【3】What can the special software recently developed do for e-readers?
A.It can remove the blue light from your devices completely.
B.It can help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelengths.
C.It can weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading.
D.It can be used in all the e-things widely and safely.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Wrong behaviors before bedtime. B.New software for night e-readers.
C.No games on the iPad in bed. D.No e-reading in bed before sleep.

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch(牧场).He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he introduced me by sharing his own story:
"I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a poor horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up."
"That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4, 000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch."
"He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, 'See me after class.'"
"The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, 'Why did I receive an F?'"
"The teacher said, 'This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.You have no money.Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There's no way you could ever do it.' Then the teacher added, 'If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.'"
