Wisconsin's Great Lakes are home to great lighthouses. Here are some lighthouses worth visiting along Lake Michigan, from south to north.
Wind Point, Racine
This 108-foot lighthouse on a point north of Racine was built in 1880. It's open for tours and climbs up the tower from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. the first Sunday of the month, June through October, and from 10 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. the Saturday before that Sunday, July through September. Admission is $ 10 for adults and $ 5 for kids aged between 6 and 11. The park and beach around the lighthouse are open daily from 6 a. m. to 10 p. m.
North Point , Milwaukee
This 74-foot lighthouse alongside a Queen Anne style keeper's quarters is a landmark in the city's Lake Park. After the coast guard decommissioned (停用) it in 1997, it stood vacant until a friendly group restored the structure and opened it as a museum in 2007. Tours are now offered from 1 p. m. to 4 p. m. Saturday and Sunday year round, plus from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Thursday and Friday in the summer. Tours cost $ 8 for adults, $ 5 for seniors (65+) and $ 5 for students and kids (5—11).
Port Washington Breakwater
This Art Deco-style lighthouse replaced an older wooden structure in 1935 as part of a Works Progress Administration project. Tours aren't available of the small structure, but visitors can walk along the 2, 500-foot breakwater to get a closer look.
Rawley Point , Two Rivers
This lighthouse is worth a visit not only for its steel tower rising 113 feet above the beach, but also for its location in Point Beach State Forest. Tours are not available of the working lighthouse, but it's viewable and photographable from the beach. In addition to six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the state forest has 17 miles of hiking trails to explore.

The first day of school our professor challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I turned round to find a wrinkled, little old lady looking at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. After being introduced, she cleared her throat and began. “We do not stop playing because we are old, we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you will die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty- seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything. I will turn eighty-eight.
The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose”. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. Rose taught us by example that it is never too late to realize our dreams.
【1】Which words can be used to describe Rose?

A. If you regret nothing, you won’t fear death.
B. If you fear death, you will regret something.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

The earliest known copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa—thought to have been painted at the same time as the original masterpiece—has been discovered at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. The work offers art-lovers an attractive clue to what the model for the world’s most famous painting really looked like. Controllers of the museum found the picture hidden beneath layers of paints during restoration work on a picture initially thought to have been a later replica(exact copy) of the Mona Lisa.
The restored version shows the same woman that Leonardo depicted (描画), against a landscape similar to that shown in the background of the original, which now hangs in the Louvre in Paris. And while the features of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa have been dulled by centuries of dirt and layers of cracked paints—which are unlikely ever to be removed—in the recently-rediscovered copy, she appears fresher-faced and younger than her better-known “twin”.
News of the find was revealed at a meeting at London’s National Gallery, linked to its “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan” exhibition. “This sensational (轰动的) find will transform our understanding of the world’s most famous picture,” the Art Newspaper reported, adding that the clues found on the Madrid version suggest that the original and the copy were begun at the same time and painted next to each other, as the work went on.
Miguel Falomir, manager of Italian painting at the Prado, told reporters that expert analysis suggested a strong link between Leonardo and the artist who painted the copy. “The painting was done in the painter’s own workshop,” he said. “It is absolutely consistent with Leonardo’s work, but Leonardo didn’t actually do any work on it himself.”
【1】Which of the following is TRUE about the new version of the Mona Lisa?
A.It was a restored version by Leonardo.
B.It was painted much later than the original version.
C.It is better preserved than the original one.
D.It has been dulled by layers of cracked paints.
【2】We can learn from the third paragraph that ________.
A.the new version of the Mona Lisa went on display at a meeting.
B.there would be two versions of the Mona Lisa at the exhibition.
C.Leonardo was made to paint with another painter meanwhile.
D.the new finding affects the understanding of the original version.
【3】What can we infer from the text?
A.The artist painted the copy in his home.
B.The artist who painted the copy must have been Leonardo’s student.
C.The artist finished painting the copy under Leonardo’s guidance.
D.The artist who painted the copy had close relation with Leonardo.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.The Prado Museum has discovered the earliest copy of the Mona Lisa.
B.The Prado Museum restored the earliest copy of the Mona Lisa.
C.The Prado Museum displayed the recently-rediscovered copy of the Mona Lisa in Spain.
D.The Prado Museum offers art-lovers a better understanding of Leonardo.

The Australian beach town of Byron Bay has a traffic problem, especially during holidays, when local streets are full of cars. But now it’s changed. The world’s first fully solar-powered train runs on a restored(修复)train line that was out of use for more than a decade.
The solar systems on the roof of the train send power to a set of batteries that replace one engine; the other engine is still in place and can provide backup power in an emergency. As the train brakes, it generates more electricity, like a hybrid car. At a train station, the train can be plugged in to pull more power from solar systems on the platform roof. If there’s a long period without sun---somewhat unlikely in this part of the world---the train can also plug in to get renewable energy from the local electricity supply.
“The large solar systems on the platform roof coupled with the solar systems on the train roof produce more solar energy per day than is required to operate an hourly return service,” says Holmes, development director of the nonprofit Byron Bay Railroad company, which runs the train. With one full charge, the train can make 12 to 15 trips.
Volunteers fully restored the train to its old condition to attract more riders, which should take more cars off city streets of the beach town. The train fits 100 seated passengers, with room for more to stand, and also has a luggage room for bikes and surfboards. A ride costs a little more than $2.
The nonprofits thinks it’s a model that could be replicated (复制)elsewhere. “Our service has had no government support or funding at all, but for this to be replicated or improved upon, the key is for government to work with enterprises on the program.” Holmes says. “Our service provides an example of how the sun’s energy can be used for sustainable transport solutions.”
【1】Why is the solar train brought into use in Byron Bay?
A. To attract visitors B. To reduce traffic
C. To fight pollution D. To use solar energy
【2】Where does the train get energy on sunless days?
A. From its engines B. From a hybrid car
C. From the platform roof D. From the local electricity supply
【3】How does Holmes feel about solar energy equipment?
A. It is labor-saving B. It is easily operated
C. It is time-consuming D. It is power guaranteed
【4】What can be inferred about the solar-powered train from the last paragraph?
A. It may be popularized in the future
B. More scientific research should be done about it
C. It could be of little use in solving energy problems.
D. Financial support from the government is badly needed

Happy, angry, amazed – these are some of the emotions we like to express these days when we’re sending a message on our smartphones! That’s why many of us now add little pictures to our texts to brighten up someone’s mobile screen but we’re also using them as a quick way of telling someone how we’re feeling. Yes, emojis have become a vital tool for communication.
The emoji was first invented in Japan in the late 1990s and the word “emoji” comes from the Japanese words for “picture” and “character”. The number of different images has dramatically increased since then and now we have a picture for every mood or situation.
So now we have the option to give this new creation the visual “thumbs-up” but have you thought why we’ve become so addicted to using emojis? Professor Vyv Evans has written a book called The Emoji Code. He says, “Increasingly, what we’re finding is that digital communication is taking over from certain aspects of face-to-face interaction. One of the reasons emojis are so interesting is that they really do enable us to express our emotional selves much more effectively.” So emojis are a sort of replacement for the visual signals or non-verbal clues we normally give when we speak to someone face-to-face.
Another advantage of emojis is that they are an international language – they don’t use words but tell a message in the form of pictures so they can be easily understood whatever your native language is. However, the emojis you send need some thought as they can sometimes be misunderstood – if a friend sends you an emoji of a hammer, you may think he is angry when really he is saying he has hurt himself or he is clumsy!
Emojis are a good way for showing common emotions. But as linguist Neil Cohn says, “To many, emojis are an exciting development of the way we communicate; To others, they are extinction of language.” It does show there is a lot more to our communication than words alone but does this mean the decline in traditional writing?
