I’ll never forget the Easter in 1946. I was twelve, my little sister, Ocy, was ten and my older sister, Darlene, was fourteen. We lived at home with our mother, and the four of us knew what we should do without dad. My dad had died five years before leaving Mom with no money and three school-aged kids to raise.
By 1946, a month before Easter, the pastor(牧师) of our church announced that a special holiday offering would be taken to help a poor family. We talked about what we could do. We decided to buy fifty pounds of potatoes and lived on them for a month. This would allow us to save twenty dollars of our grocery money for the offering. Then we thought that if we turned our electric lights off as much as possible, we'd save money on that month's electric bill.
The night before Easter, we were so excited that we could hardly sleep. We didn’t care that we wouldn’t have new clothes for Easter; we had seventy dollars for the sacrificial offering. We could hardly wait to get to the church!
Finally, we sat in church proudly. When the offering began, mom put in a ten-dollar bill and each of us kids put in a twenty-dollar bill. We sang all the way home from church. Over lunch, mom had a surprise for us. She had bought a dozen eggs, and we had boiled Easter eggs with our fried potatoes!
Later that afternoon the pastor dropped by. Mom went to the door, talked with him for a moment, and then came back with an envelope in her hand. We asked what it was, but she didn’t say a word. She opened the envelope and out fell a bunch of money.

The meaning of facial expressions is decided by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture, the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.
A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual. However, many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places. Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; while some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is often used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions(情感), but we should not try “reading” people from another culture, because we would “read” someone from our own culture. In fact, members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another do, which does not mean they do not experience emotions. For example, in public and in formal situations, many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
Because of personal and cultural differences in the United States, it is difficult to conclude about Americans and facial expressiveness. In America, people from certain cultural backgrounds seem to be more facially expressive than others. Remember that try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.
【1】What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?
A.Joy. B.Politeness. C.Love. D.Thankfulness.
【2】The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can ________.
A.show friendliness to strangers B.be used to hide true feelings
C.be used in the wrong places D.show personal habits
【3】What should we do before trying “reading” people?
A.Find out about their past experience. B.Learn about their relations with others.
C.Understand their cultural backgrounds. D.Figure out what they will do next.
【4】From the text we know that___________.
A.Russian don’t smile enough
B.Vietnamese usually tell stories with a smile
C.Japanese don’t show their emotions with their friends
D.Americans from certain cultural backgrounds are more facial expressive.
【5】What would be the best title for the text?
A.Cultural Differences B.Smiles and Relationship
C.Facial Expressiveness D.Habits and Emotions

A bike road in Krommenie, a city in the Netherlands, isn't just helping people get around--it's also producing energy. The road, named SolaRoad, is paved with solar batteries, which use the power of the sun to make electricity.
The project is created to show that the places where people ride, walk, or drive can also serve to produce energy. And the solar-powered road is doing a better job than expected. So far, it has created enough electricity to power three houses for a year.
Many cities already cover rooftops with solar panels(面板). By using renewable sources of energy, cities can decrease their dependence on fuels, coal, oil, and natural gas. Renewable sources of energy don't get used up or create pollution as fuels do.
Roads can provide even larger space than roofs to harvest energy from the sun. Sten de Wit, one of the researchers behind SolaRoad, says, “In the Netherlands, we have about 140,000 kilometers of roads. It's a huge area, more than all of the rooftops combined."
To create the experimental bike road, the SolaRoad team lay down concrete slabs(混凝土板) with rows of solar batteries on. A layer of strong glass covers and protects the batteries. Sunlight passes through the glass and into the batteries, which turn the sunlight into electrical energy.
Although the bike road is expensive to build, with the energy it produces, it could pay for itself within 15 years. By building solar-powered bike roads, cities could produce enough energy to power street lamps, traffic lights, and even electric cars. Most people don't notice that the bike road is different from a traditional street. Sten de Wit says, “That is exactly what we want: it does whatever it has to do to be a proper road while harvesting solar energy at the same time."
【1】What does “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.the project B.energy C.the solar-powered road D.a better job

A.can be used once B.never be used before

B.Netherlands has about 140,000 kilometers of SolaRoad.
C.There is a layer of strong glass on it.
D.It is doing a better job than people expected.
【4】From the last paragraph, we can infer that________.
A.the solar-powered bike road is worth building
B.the SolaRoad could produce enough electricity for the whole city
C.the SolaRoad looks different from the traditional road
D.most cities can’t afford to build the solar-powered bike road
【5】What is the main idea of the passage?
A.New solar batteries take the place of traditional solar panels
B.The advantages of using renewable resources in cities
C.A new kind of solar-powered bike gets ready to surprise you
D.A bike road in the Netherlands produces energy from the sun
