Growing pains and gains
It’s not easy to grow up. Actually it’s far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel trapped, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. When we look back on all the hardships in life with a positive attitude (态度), we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along, not because they wanted me to suffer but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They’ve always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong.Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (凸块) on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

Do you often feel that you aren't taking in as much of the joy around you as you could?I recently caught myself feeling this way,and based on a suggestion by John Horton, coauthor(合著者)of The Inner Game of Stress,I put myself on a 30-day life-appreciation course.
The only assignment each day was to go outside and appreciate life.
So I started by taking in the beauty around me.During the first few days,I was able to appreciate my surroundings, although it was an intellectual appreciation, not an emotional one.
After the first week,it was more uncomfortable to lie in bed and think about things than it was to get up and see them for myself.
If you often wake up feeling anxious or depressed,or if you don't look forward to each day, then you need to try this course for yourself.
It's an inner workout that you can do anywhere. It may not change your life, but it will adjust your attitude, and that's pretty helpful in this crazy world.
I have always believed in ending the day on a positive note by writing a word or two in a gratitude journal and saying something sweet to my wife about the day we shared.
Now,I have a new morning habit. It hasn't changed my routine one bit,but it has changed the way I look at the world.
Creating a new habit isn't about perfection-it's about getting what you want by creating a change in your behavior and thinking.
So now, while I'm making my coffee in the morning,I'm also appreciating what I have. It's quick, fulfilling, and a much better way to start my day than looking at my phone or computer.
And because of this,my attitude is better,as I've already begun my morning on a positive note rather than a problematic one.
The idea here is that if you can appreciate your life,it actually changes the way you feel about it.
Appreciation will give you more energy to live the way you would like to live.
As a means of improving our mood,it's highly underrated(被低估的)。The easy task of appreciating what we have simply makes life better.
【1】What does the author think of his new morning habit?
A.It has changed his daily routine.
B.It has increased his desire for perfection.
C.It has improved his physical health.
D.It has changed his way of viewing the world.
【2】Which of the following might the author disagree to?
A.Enjoying the beautiful surroundings of your neighborhood.
B.Appreciating a cup of coffee in the morning.
C.Amusing yourself with your phone to start your day.
D.Seeing things from a different angle.
【3】What's the author's main purpose in writing this article?
A.To recommend a life-appreciation course to readers.
B.To explain why appreciation is often underrated.
C.To encourage readers to be grateful for life.
D.To advise all the readers to change their lifestyle.

The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp(潮湿的)outside.”Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly." Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr. Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.
Mr. Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
【1】Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?
A. The British often enlarge the fact.
B. British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
C. The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.
D. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
【2】The author explains understatement by__________.
A. using examples B. making comparisons
C. following time order D. describing a process
【3】Mr. Bean makes people laugh by__________.
A. telling funny stories B. making jokes about others' accents
C. copying how others behave D. using his body movements and facial expressions
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A. British Humour in Comedy B. Humour in Different Cultures
C. Developing Your Sense of Humour D. Understanding British Humour

Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled to start breathing.
Oliver fought his first battle without much assistance from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver's survival.______.
However, Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced his arrival, to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow and whispered, "Let me see die child, and die."
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. "You must not talk about dying yet," he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby on its forehead with her cold white lips, then stared wildly around the room, fell back﹣and died. "Poor dear! " said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in the pocket , of her long skirt.
The doctor began to put on his coat. "The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties," he said. "If so, give it a little milk to keep it quiet." Then he looked at the dead woman. "The mother was a good﹣looking girl. Where did she come from?"
"She was brought here last night" replied the old woman. "She was found lying in the street. She'd walked some distance, judging by her shoes, which were worn to pieces. Where she came from, where she was going to, or what her name was, nobody knows."
The doctor lifted the girl's left hand. "The old story." he said sadly, shaking his head. "No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night."
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. Without clothes, under his first blanket, he could have been the child of a king or a beggar. But when the woman dressed him later in rough cotton clothes, yellow with age, he looked exactly what he was﹣an orphan in a workhouse, ready for a life of misery, hunger, and neglect.
Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphan, perhaps he would have cried even more loudly.
There was no one to look after the baby in the workhouse, so Oliver was sent to a special "baby farm" nearby There, he and thirty other children rolled around the floor all day, without the inconvenience of too much food or too much clothing. Mrs Mann, the old woman who "looked after" them, was very experienced. She knew what was good for children, and a full stomach was very dangerous to their health. She also knew what was good for herself, so she kept for her own use the money that she was given for the children's food. The board responsible for the orphans sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent the beadle, a kind of local policeman, to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the board arrived, of course, the children were always neat and clean.
This was the way Oliver was brought up. Consequently, at the age of nine he was a pale, thin child and short for his age. But despite frequent beatings by Mrs Mann, his spirit was strong, which was probably the reason why he managed to reach the age of nine at all.
On Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr Bumble, the beadle, came to the house to see Mrs Mann. Through the front window Mrs Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who worked with her.
"Quick! Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!" she said. Then she ran out to unlock the gate which was always kept locked.

For you,the “Clear and Bright” day that falls in every April might be no more than just another holiday — the fact that it comes with three days off school matters to most students 【1】 more than the fact that it is part of the 24 solar terms.
But the UNESCO has recognized the importance of the 24 solar terms. This ancient system that Chinese people have used to keep track of the time of year 【2】 (add) to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on Nov 30.
For starters, you may have heard your mom say: “The sanfu days are almost over. The heat won’t be here for long.” The sanfu days are a period of time that 【3】 (fall) in summer, somewhere 【4】 Minor Heat (in July) and Autumn Equinox (in September). In some places, solar terms guide people’s lives through special foods, 【6】 (culture) events and healthy living tips. For example, people from northern China are in the habit of eating dumplings on the day of Winter Solstice. And on Start of Autumn, some people treat 【7】 to a big feast, especially of meat, something they call “putting on autumn weight”, or tieqiubiao.
But no matter 【8】 differently people celebrate the 24 solar terms, they have been here for a long time and could last forever.
According to Chinese writer and academic Yu Shicun, unlike many other examples of intangible cultural heritage – Peking Opera and Chinese Zhusuan, for example – the solar terms are neither regional (地域的) nor a type of art or skill. Instead, the system is a philosophy of time, 【9】 applies to everything. And this means they are 【10】 (likely) to die out.
