A primary school teacher decided to have her class play a game. The teacher told each student to bring a plastic bag with a few potatoes in it to school. Each student would “name” their potatoes after people they did not like. Therefore, the number of potatoes would be different depending on how many people each student disliked.
The next day, all of the students brought their potatoes to school. Some kids had just one or two potatoes, while others had as many as five or six. The teacher then told the children that they would have to carry their potatoes with them wherever they went for one week.
Several days passed by. Some of the students started to complain (抱怨) because their potatoes began to go bad and smell terrible. The students who carried more potatoes also complained about how heavy their bags were.
One week later, the game was over. The teacher asked, “How did you feel about carrying around your potatoes for a week?”
The students complained once again. The teacher simply smiled and said, “This is what it’s like to carry hatred in your heart. You have to carry it with you wherever you go. If you can’t stand carrying those potatoes for one week, can you imagine having hate in your heart for an entire lifetime?”
It can be exhausting to carry hate in your heart for a whole lifetime. It’s like carrying a heavy bag all day long.
So forgive others and move on with your own life.

We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us really enjoy listening to our mothers speak. Scientists have found that our brains (大脑) greatly like the voices of our own mothers better.
Scientists at Stanford University, US, recently studied this. They scanned (扫描) children’s brains when they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers’ voices. They found that 97% of the time, children could recognize (辨别出) their mothers’ voices at once.
Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more excited. We usually just use one part of our brain to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, different parts of the brain start to work at the same time.
Why are we so sensitive(敏感) to our mothers’ voices? It starts even before we’re born. When children are still in the womb (子宫), they hear their mothers talking. This can not only make babies feel comfortable but also teach them language and social skills, even though they are still very young. The babies learn to recognize their mothers’ voices as a rewarding sound. Later, when children hear this sound again, they will pay more attention to it.
Some sounds are necessary for our survival (生存) or bring us happiness. These sounds are recognized by our brains as rewarding sounds. Most human voices are not recognized in this way, since we hear them so often. But mothers’ voices are different. They bring us a lot of comfort. This is the power of mom’s voice.
【1】What will happen when children hear their mothers’ voices?
A.Many parts of their brains become active.
B.They will need time to recognize the voices.
C.Their language skills start to improve.
【2】Why do children pay more attention to their mothers’ voices according to paragraph 4?
A.Because they always talk with their mothers.
B.Because their mothers’ voices make them more comfortable.
C.Because they can get a prize if they do so.
【3】The underline word ‘‘rewarding sounds” in last paragraph refers to sounds that ____________.
A.our mothers make B.we often hear C.can help us a lot
【4】What is the story mainly about?
A.Why we should listen carefully to our mothers.
B.Why do we like our mothers’ voices better.
C.How we recognize our mothers’ voices.
【5】Where can you probably find this passage?

Ana decided to start a group called Peruvian Hearts. She wanted to provide (提供) orphans in Peru with education, clothing and food. In the first two years, Peruvian Hearts raised about $18,000 for the orphanage. The group also built a chicken coop (鸡舍) so the girls could eat fresh eggs.

As society develops, people’s life is getting better and better. But at the same time, people also feel more stressful (有压力的). ①In fact, stress is one of the biggest problems that people face today. It’s necessary for everyone to release (释放) the stress of life and study.
Students in University of Columbia were busy preparing for the exam week. It was the most stressful period for everyone.
②所以这所大学希望用一种新的方法帮助学生们放松。It set up a “scream booth (叫喊亭)” for them. The booth looked like a fridge. Anyone could walk into the booth and scream it out before the exam week. ③ Students didn’t need to care how long and how loud they screamed. The camera in the booth would record the process. The students could play back the video if they wanted.
Many students walked into the booth and had a try. When they walked out the booth, there was always a smile on their faces. The “scream booth” became very popular and helpful. ④ 在释放压力这件事上,它真地发挥了重要的作用。
For students who did not like to scream, the university had other measures. Students could take free yoga classes and have free ice cream after class. ⑤ It was happy for students to take exams with less stress.
