Can animals be artistic? Some experts think so. Painting and music are part of efforts to keep animals happy at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Zookeepers there believe that animals need enrichment just like people do.
A sloth bear (长毛熊) called Francois is one of the National Zoo’s artists. He began his artistic career two years ago. Francois has a very unusual way to paint. He uses his breath to paint. His zookeeper, Stacey Tabellario, says that although the technique may look strange, it is actually a very natural behavior for sloth bears. They have got big lungs and they can breathe out a huge amount of air. The zookeepers fill one of those tubes fill of paint and ask them to breathe through it And they blow all of the paint onto the canvas (画布), making the really cool paintings.
Animal artists come in all shapes and sizes at the Zoo. They use many kinds of techniques to create their works of art. Apes use paintbrushes. Many use their paws or claws — much like a human painter would use his or her hands.
Stacey Tabellario says Francois seems to enjoy expressing himself through his art. “When I set up the materials for painting activity, he comes and sits next to them and waits until we are ready to start painting. He does that every time. I also see where his eyes go. He dose see the paints come out of the tube and land on the canvas.” But not every animal wants to paint.
Music is another part of the arts enrichment program. Physically and mentally interesting (有趣味的) activities are an important part of the daily care of the animals. Trainers have a set of tools, from tablet computers to small toys.
Kenton Kerns says the program helps the animals and the zookeepers in many ways. Every interaction between keepers and their animals creates some sort of connections. The one-of-a-kind works of art created by the animals are popular with zoo visitors. Many are sold at the zoo’s fundraising events.

Some hot dog lovers may feel guilty when they enjoy their favorite food. They even exercise excessively(过分的)to burn off calories afterward. Now they can relieve the pain. A company in Norway develops a product made from trees. It can replace fat in foods like hot dogs but has no calories.
A product named SenseFi is introduced to the public by a Norwegian biorefinery company, Borregaard. Though its taste and feel are similar to those of fat, no calories are contained in it.
The material used to create this product is microfibrillated cellulose(MFC), which is a waste product that trees produce when they are cut and prepared for use. Every year there is over a hundred billion tons of cellulose(纤维素) produced by plants, among which only a small part is now useful to humans.
According to a report from the Norwegian daily newspaper Dagbladet, Borregard has spent $36.3 million on developing SenseFi. This project went through a 10-year study conducted by the Paper and Fibre Research institute in Trondheim, Norway. It successfully entered the U.S. market and the company opened a plant in Wisconsin. The food industry there was expected to embrace the arrival of SenseFi.
The company is speaking highly of this product for its incredible effect on fighting against obesity(肥胖). “We're rolling it out primarily in the U.S., where it has been approved. Sales are just about underway, and there is a lot of focus on fighting obesity," said the company's Business Director Harald Ronneberg.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that about 40 percent of adults are overweight, and in 2008, the cost of medical treatment of obesity was $147.
With the help of SenseFi, meat used for making foods like hot dogs can be recreated. Not only does it keep the flavor of fat, but it also reduces calorie intake while providing the body with more fiber, which helps people fill themselves up and digest more effectively.
【1】What do we know about the raw material of SenseFi?
A.It helps cut trees.
B.It comes from trees.
C.It is similar to hot dogs in taste.
D.It exists in a small amount.
【2】What does the underlined word "embrace" in Paragraph 3 possibly mean?
A.Spread. B.Increase. C.Welcome. D.Praise.
【3】Which factor of SenseFi would appeal to customers most?
A.It doesn't have any calories.
B.It keeps the feel and flavor of fat
C.It provides different kinds of nutrition.
D.It is based on a 10-year study.
【4】Why does Borregaard introduce the product mainly in America?
A.It opened a plant in Wisconsin.
B.The food industry in America is booming-
C.Most Americans think highly of the products.
D.Many Americans suffer from problems linked to obesity.

Teenagers who start the school day really early are likely to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That's the finding of a new study of nearly 30,000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18.
Getting too little sleep can put kids at risk for a number of problems. Sleepy teens are more likely to be overweight, to have trouble concentrating and to struggle in school. Genevieve Gariepy, who works at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, wanted to know how earlier school start times night be connected with weight.
"Overweight in teenagers is a big problem in North America," she says. The number of overweight kids has grown over the past 30 years. About one in three American and Canadian teens are now overweight. Kids who don't sleep enough may be at higher risk. So Gariepy decided to focus on the impact of school start times.
Her team collected start times for 362 Canadian schools. Then they asked students at those schools to give their height and weight. In all, they collected data from nearly 30,000 10-to 18-year-olds. Among 6th-to 10th-graders, those who started school earlier were likely to be slightly heavier for their height. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was connected, on average, with a slightly lower weight among students who were the same sex, age and height. However, the difference is slight. Healthy eating and getting enough exercise will play a bigger role in keeping a healthy weight.
Because the study compared kids who already started school at different times of day, it's not clear that changing school start time would help heavier kids lose weight. To know for sure, researchers would want to compare the same kids before and after changing to a later school start time.
Still, the study is a good start, says Cora Collette Bruener, a doctor at Seattle Children's Hospital in Washington. The findings add to a growing pile of evidence that later school start times might be better for teen health, she says.
【1】What is the finding of the new study?
A.More and more teens are growing overweight.
B.Healthy diets and enough exercise help reduce weight.
C.Teens who start school earlier are a little overweight.
D.Teens who start school earlier do not perform well.
【2】To keep a healthy weight, teenagers need______________.
A.much sleep B.earlier school start time
C.less sleep D.a balanced diet and enough exercise
【3】How did Gariepy's team get their findings?
A.By recording the teens' weight.
B.By checking the teens' physical health.
C.By comparing different sets of data.
D.By measuring the teens' height.
【4】What does Cora Collette Bruener think of the study?
A.It has inspiring value. B.It lacks further support.
C.It needs improving D.It is well designed.

Feeding bread to the ducks is a fond pastime for many of us, reminding us of happy childhood trips to the local park.【1】Eating it can cause our feathered friends to develop a condition called Angel Wing, which is when too much bread makes birds’ feathers grow too quickly. This additional weight puts a strain on their muscles, causing their wings to twist and drop open, and if not treated fast, they can lose the ability to fly.
“Angel Wing can be cured if we reach birds before it has developed too severely,” says Caroline Simpson, a trustee of UK charity Swan Lifeline. “【2】” Over the last 20 years UK charity Swan Lifeline has rescued and treated more than 30,000 birds. Adult birds can develop heart disease by eating much bread, so it’s important that we do our best to prevent this by feeding then with the right kind of food.
【3】Rotten (腐烂的) bread at the bottom of rivers and lakes allows bacteria to produce, spreading disease and attracting rats and other pests to our waterways, which can result in the presence of a mould (霉菌) called Aspergillus. It has the potential to kill waterfowl (水禽) and other wildlife if it gets into their lungs.
【4】Giving birds the right food — like frozen peas, sweetcorn and some other plants — is good for both them and the environment. They can float on the water surface, and birds can enjoy them.【5】
A.So we must stop feeding the ducks.
B.But did you know that bread actually puts birds in danger?
C.This doesn’t mean we have to stop fun trips to feed the ducks.
D.Bread can also cause harmful changes to the natural ecosystem (生态系统).
E.What a scene it is to watch ducks eating bread loating on the river.
F.Otherwise the results can be serious — such as the loss of the wing.
G.So next time take a healthier alternative and do your bit to protect our precious wildlife.

An honest mistake
Karie double -checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand new dictionary. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She'd spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote 1-y before handing in her paper.
Ms. McCormack graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack's feet flipped in to the air.
“Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down.
The whole class burst into applause! Ms. McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned as she read the label on the box :
To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn't answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in the mid air. She just couldn't believe her own eyes. Honestly?
YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie stuffed the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a "t" was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Karie plodded down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn't earned the prize after all? That Ms. McCormack did the handstand for nothing?
