"I've always been this way, ever since I was young. I've always really just liked soccer, and I've always devoted a lot of time to it. When I was a kid, my friends would call me to go out with them, but I would stay home because I had practice the next day."

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while— then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be___________Sometimes,we,as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans,it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
B.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
C.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
D.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
【2】From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend,we will probably be ______.
A.warmly welcomed at the airport
B.offered a ride to his home
C.treated hospitably at his home
D.treated to dinner in a restaurant
【3】The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.
A.strict with time B.willing to spend time
C.careful with time D.serious with time
【4】A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.
A.Friendships between Chinese
B.Friendships between Americans
C.Americans’hospitality
D.Americans’and Chinese’s views of friendships

Mobile phones are an important business tool for farmers in rural areas. But they also put a valuable educational tool in their hands.
The University of Illinois in the United States has a project called SAWBO—Scientific Animations without Borders. It produces educational videos that can be downloaded to cell phones. The goal is to help people in developing countries improve their lives.
One video shows farmers how to make a natural insecticide from neem seeds(种子) to prevent insect damage to crops. The process starts with sorting and drying the neem fruits. Then let the fruit dry in the sun for about three or four days, until they become brown. Using a mortar(碾槌) and stick, the fruits are slightly pounded to remove the shells from the fruits without breaking the seed inside.
The videos use computer animation(动画). Some of the animated characters are a little funny looking-like a farmer with a long nose. But the subjects are serious, including a health video on preventing cholera(霍乱). Team member Francisco Seufferheld says the information in the videos is meant to be quickly understood. He says, “In two minutes, we can explain a complicated idea.”
The researchers tested the seven-minute video on seven mobile phones. They wanted to see if people would share the video using Bluetooth wireless technology. With Bluetooth, files can be passed to a nearby phone even if neither phone is connected to the Internet. As a result, in one month, the video had spread to one hundred eighteen people in fifty different villages. “This is just unbelievable effect,” said Francisco Seufferheld.
The team has made a few videos so far. These are available in a total of eighty languages, dialects and accents. Professor Barry Pittendrigh says there are plans for more videos later this year.
【1】What is the text mainly about?
A.A best-selling mobile phone.
B.A valuable educational project for farmers

D.A new type of scientist –farmer relationship

C.can be used to sort and dry the neem fruits.
D.is easy for farmers to understand

Community activity is about doing something in our community because we want to or we feel we should rather than because we have to.
There are lots of ways to take civic(公共的) responsibility and be active in your community: Joining a local environmental or clean-up group, helping with a primary school play.
What can teenagers get from being involved?
【1】 By getting involved with community activities, teenagers can get a chance to work with positive adult role models besides their parents. Working with other adults encourages teenagers to see the world in different ways.
【2】Young people are busy working out who they are and where they fit in the world. Being involved in the community activities can give your child a positive way of understanding who he is. As a result, he might come to see himself as helpful or just a “good” person. Being involved in the community activities can also help create a sense of being connected to the community.
【3】Community activities give teenagers the chance to use the skills they already have. For example, your child could use the cooking skills he’s learned at home at a community kitchen. This kind of experience gives him the chance to see how many skills he has and how valuable they can be. Voluntary work and community activities are great opportunities to develop skills to get a job.
【4】Being able to balance free time, work and study is very important to kid’s future life. Being part of a community activity could help your children to get more organized and start to manage their own time.
【5】Finding a community activity can develop teenagers’ self-confidence. Your child can learn to deal with challenges, communicate with different types of people. This is good for teenagers’ self-esteem(自尊).
It can be very positive for young people to have something that gets them involved, where others expect them to turn up and take part, and where they’re supported to achieve something as part of a group.
