Cycling has become more popular in the UK recently for a number of reasons. One of those must be the British cycling success at both the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the London Olympic Games in 2012. Sir Chris Hoy won three gold medals in Beijing and another two in London. He and Jason Kenny are the most successful Olympic cyclists of all time. The UK also won the Tour de Frances six times.
Cycling is not just a sport though, and Tony is just one of the many people who like to cycle long distances because they want to enjoy the natural beauty of the UK. He belongs to Sustrans? a volunteer organization created in the 1980s. Sustrans has combined quieter roads and disused railway tracks to create the National Cycle Network of cycle-friendly routes. Cyclists follow these routes to raise money for charity, but also because they enjoy the scenery across England and like to get away from the busy city life.
Connie lives and works in London and, like half a million Londoners every day,she travels to and from work by bike. Since the introduction of the Congestion Charge where drivers pay to bring a car into the center of London during working hours in 2003, the capital city has seen an almost 50 percent increase in the number of people traveling by bike. Cycling to work takes the same amount of time as it would by bus or tube. Connie says that cycling is cheaper and keeps her fit, too.
Nigel is a campaigner. In addition to traveling to and from work by bicycle, doing some charity rides and generally enjoying cycling, Nigel runs a local campaigning group and helps organize the ‘critical commute’ ---where cyclists gather every last Friday of the month and cycle into work together. For Nigel, cycling is about saving the planet, a cost-effective way of reducing our carbon footprint today.

My father had died when I was young, so if I didn't acknowledge my mother's birthday, likely no one would. On her birthday, I decided to bake her some cookies, take them to her house and leave them with a little note for her.
But what to write about? My mother and I had not always been close. Pouring out words of love seemed insincere, but there were plenty of things I did appreciate, so I wrote a letter expressing my appreciation for what she had taught me. She taught me to live within our means, and not to go into debt. She taught me the color of someone's skin was irrelevant. She taught me helping others in need was its own reward. She taught me to value the elderly. She taught me how to see the shapes in the clouds. She taught me to appreciate the way the air smelled after a rain ...
Having finished the letter, I sent the cookies and the handwritten letter to my mother. That evening, she called and thanked me, saying it was a wonderful birthday present.
Two years later, she suffered a fatal heart attack. While cleaning out her house, I came across a photocopy of the birthday letter I had written to her in the drawer of the bedside table in the guest room. And then room after room, drawer after drawer revealed more photocopies of the same letter. There was one in the kitchen drawer and one taped to the inside of the kitchen cabinet. I also found one in a drawer in both bathrooms, another in the living room and two more in her bedroom.
Finally, I opened the drawer beside her bed, where I found an old handkerchief and as I pulled it out, a wrinkled piece of paper fluttered to the floor. It was the original birthday letter. It had been smoothed over and over again. I realized at that moment that the best things I could have given my mother weren't really things at all.
【1】What did the author learn from her mother?
A.Live a happy life regardless of how much money one has.
B.We should treat people of different skin colors differently.
C.One can be rewarded a lot of money when helping others.
D.It's of great importance to explore the beauty of nature.
【2】How many photocopies of the birthday letter did the author find in her mother's house?
A.Six. B.Seven. C.Eight. D.Nine.
【3】What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.What her mother value was her love not the gift itself.
B.She should never have sent any present to her mother.
C.Of all the gifts she had given her mother, nothing was best.
D.No gift was better than what she had given her mother.

A group of schoolchildren wear colorful jackets; holding hands, they leave for a woodland picnic. Elsewhere a young man leaps into his car and speeds off to work. Moments later he loses control of the car and his spinning car kills each one of the cheery schoolchildren. The camera lingers on their dead hands and the now-empty classroom. Then an unpleasant voice explains that they represent the children killed as a result of speeding in Northern Ireland since 2000.
British road-safety ads are more shocking than those broadcast in America. The British have a preference for horror. It might reflect the nation's long tradition of public-service broadcasting, which seeks to entertain and inform at once. But do the ads work?
Though bloody, shocking public-information films linger in people’s heads, they seem not to change behavior much. If the consequences seem too extreme, few may believe that disaster could happen to them or adjust their behavior accordingly. Tessa Langley of the University of Nottingham has compared the influence of two smoking campaigns. One showed tumors erupting out of cigarettes and the other showed more positive effects that also urged people to quit. The former proved more memorable, but the latter led more people to ring the national smoking helpline.
The budget for public-information films is shrinking. The Central Office of Information, the government’s marketing department, was closed in 2011. In 2008-09 the Department for Transport (DfT) spent almost £3million on its drink-drive advertising campaign. In 2013-14 spending fell to less than £l million. Unable to afford as many spots on television, the producers hope their films will be shared on social media. And that is encouraging them to produce a great number of bloody ads. Less shocking ads might work better, but fewer people would see them.
【1】What’s the purpose of writing paragraph 1?
A.To share a terrible story with readers.
B.To show the harmful effects of speeding.
C.To offer an example of British bloody ads.
D.To describe a car accident in Northern Ireland.
【2】What message does the author mainly want to convey in paragraph 3?
A.There are two different campaigns designed to urge people to quit smoking.
B.Bloody public-information ads are more effective as they're more memorable.
C.Explaining the growth of tumors is a good way to urge people to quit smoking.
D.Showing the positive effects of giving up smoking can better persuade people to quit.
【3】What does the underlined word “shrinking” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Continuing. B.Decreasing. C.Removing. D.Progressing.
【4】What can be a suitable title for this text?
A.Do Shocking Ads Really Work?
B.What Public-information Ads Bring Us?
C.How Do the British Create Ads?
D.Why Are British Ads So Shocking?

We certainly look different. The most obvious differences between boys and girls are our bodies, inside and out. For example, can men have babies? Can women grow beards? 【1】
In the 1800s, scientists developed a theory called craniology (头骨学), which said that intelligence could be measured by skull size. Men have bigger skulls than women. So men must be smarter, people thought. 【2】 No one encouraged them to go on in school. Some doctors even said women who went to college would no longer be able to have children! Of course, now we know these beliefs aren’t true.
In the 1950s, psychologists gave girls and boys science tests to see if they could tell who was smarter. On average, the girls did worse than the boys. 【3】 But is this really true? Instead of measuring natural ability, maybe the tests revealed something about the conditions under which children were being taught. Parents and teachers didn't expect girls to do well in math or science, and so they didn’t encourage them. In class, teachers focused their attention on boys. 【4】
As scientists continue to investigate, they have discovered that boys do seem to be better than girls at something called spatial rotation (空间转动). Girls,on the other hand, do better on some tests of vocabulary and language. Why? 【5】 They often give girls dolls to play with, while they more frequently give boys blocks. Playing with blocks helps children develop spatial skills. So without meaning to, adults might be helping boys develop better spatial skills. And maybe they talk to girls more, which helps girls with those vocabulary words.
A.But how different are we really?
B.Therefore, women were treated differently.
C.This influenced how well boys learned and how poorly girls did.
D.If our bodies differ, what does that say about our intelligence and skills?
E.Naturally, researchers concluded that boys are smarter than girls in science.
F.Studies have shown that parents treat boys and girls differently as soon as they’re born.
G.According to psychologists, girls were less intelligent than boys in many aspects.

Paperless office was first coined in 1975. Four decades later, we’re still chasing the paperless office dream. Take the financial industry for example—it is one of the slower industries to hug digital transformation. Many financial institutions today still send out trade conformations by mail. I can tell you from first-hand experience that going paperless is by no means impossible. The Centric Digital office is a paperless work environment where all the office operations go digital, which has amazed our business partners.
Actually companies need to stress the benefits of a digital culture for communications. Going paperless can save time and money. You could say goodbye to costly repairs, office supply orders, wasted employee time and so on. Besides, forbidding paper in the office forces information to be 100% digital, where you can make endless amounts of backups (备份), which easily increase transparency(透明). Not to mention, top talents want to work for digital companies.
You might think the secret to a paperless company is purely technology. Well, not really. Thanks to products like iPads, smart-phones and cloud services, the ability to go paperless is highly accessible. Yet, even with all this technology, companies continue to rely on paper. It's not because they don’t have access to the technology, but because they’re lacking the politics, organizational structure and strong desire to change. In order to go paperless, companies need to change the way they think and operate. The decision needs to be made and cried out and everyone needs to work together to make it.
Yes, the paperless office has been a very long time in the making but it no longer has to be. With numerous amounts of software, services, apps and technology available today, the only thing we need to do is to make the decision to go paperless and see it through.
