Citizen science projects make it possible for you to collect real data that scientists can use in their research. Here are four examples of projects that you can take part in.
FrogWatch USA
Frogs play an important role in their ecosystems, being both predator and prey (捕食者和猎物). So, understanding their populations is one way scientists track wetland health. From February to August, citizens like you listen for the calls of specific species and record them in an online database. To make sure volunteers know what they are listening for, FrogWatch has a network of local chapter coordinators (协调者) who lead the training.
Globe at Night
You wouldn't be the only one wondering about the light coming into your sky from nearby lamps and cities. Scientists have big questions about this too. Globe at Night is an international project that has had volunteers take more than 100,000 measurements in 115 countries. In the past they only enlisted (征募) citizen scientists in the winter and spring, but since 2017 they have set observation dates for the whole year. The project welcomes volunteers who want to help observe light pollution that could affect wildlife, health, and energy consumption.
Did You Feel It?
The “Did You Feel It?” program depends on feedback (反馈) from anyone who feels the shaking or sees any damage as the result of an earthquake. This data helps to produce a map that is available within minutes — and updated rapidly — documenting where shaking and damage are the most intense (强烈的).
GLOBE Observer
If you would rather take your own photos than look through images from a telescope, consider downloading the GLOBE Observer app. This app allows citizen scientists to take photos of clouds for comparison with satellite images. Become an observer and become part of a major source of global human observation of clouds.

I’m going through it right now. Last night one of our three family dogs was hit and killed by a car in front of my mother’s house. The dogs became, more or less, my mother’s surrogate children after her human children grew up and moved out and my father ran with a midlife crisis and left her. The one that was killed had bonded with my mother far more than the others.
She is extremely shocked. I loved the dog, but my true sadness currently results from having to watch my mother bear another tragedy after everything she has been through in her life. In the midst of all of this, I have to sincerely applaud the driver of the vehicle, which feels wrong, but it’s not.
I’ll start by stating it was not his fault. The dog ran after a deer into the road at night. In an effort not to hit the deer with his car, he changed direction, not seeing the dog, resulting in its death. He could have very easily continued on his way, but he did something that I hope I never forget.
In my eyes, he did the right thing. The driver pulled over, carefully wrapped our dog in a blanket he got from his car to preserve its dignity, and carried it up to my mother’s front door.
He was visibly shaking and very upset. He informed my mother of what happened and she broke down immediately. He comforted her the best a stranger could and waited with her while my sister rushed to her house. He left his information and offered assistance in any way he could.
Yes, he is the man who hit and killed our dog accidentally. What he really did was spare my mother, and potentially my sister, from coming across a horrible scene themselves while searching for the dog. He had so many choices that were far easier to make than what he chose. He did the right thing and for that, thank you, Stranger. You restored my faith in humanity.
【1】What do we know about the dog killed by the driver?
A.It was killed by the driver on purpose.
B.It lost its life during a fight against a deer.
C.It was a particular favorite of the author’s mother.
D.It got killed by hitting the deer while running after it.
【2】What does the underlined part “feels wrong, but it’s not” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.The driver ought to answer for the dog’s death.
B.The author thought it sensible to praise the driver.
C.The author believed it was not the driver’s fault to kill the dog.
D.The driver should not take responsibility for the dog’s death at a11.
【3】Which of the following can best describe the driver?
A.Self-condemned and considerate. B.Calm and far-sighted.
C.Reliable and generous. D.Irresponsible and unreasonable.
【4】What may the author agree with?
A.Still waters have deep bottoms.
B.Those who are ready to believe are easy to cheat.
C.When the wound is healed, the pain is forgotten.
D.Taking responsibility is the best policy.

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes(建筑群) for the recycling of waste. The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant(工厂) for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting(分类整理) and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars (金属条) which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan(风扇) to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps (垃圾场), some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.
【1】What is NOT mentioned as a part of the recycling process described in Paragraph 3?
A.Separating light elements from the heavy ones. B.Sorting out small pieces of metal.
C.Breaking up whatever is breakable. D.Sharpening metal bars.
【2】Why will big cities have to build their own recycling plants?
A.To protect the environment. B.To get big profits from those plants.
C.To get raw materials locally. D.To reduce transportation expense.
【3】What can we know from the passage?
A.Rubbish will be dealt with in a better way later.
B.Recycling plant only recycles metal and paper.
C.Dangerous wastes can’t be recycled.
D.The first full-scale giant recycling plants will begin operation in less than 15 years.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Scientific Ways to Get Energy B.The Location of Recycling Plants
C.New Ways of Recycling Wastes D.Some Methods to Protect the Environment

What do you do at the end of the day when you re finished with work? How you spend your free time can have a big impact (影响) on your mental health, Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up (郁结的) stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer. But, interestingly, how you spend your free time can also impact your work performance.
Researchers at the University of Sheffield’s Institute of Work Psychology in the UK found that developing hobbies can develop your confidence about how well you perform your job. But your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5 work.
To study the connection between work and leisure (休闲) activities, researchers employed 129 people who worked and were active in hobbies like rock climbing, musical theater and singing. They had them complete surveys to see how serious and committed they were to their hobbies and how demanding their jobs were. Then, each month for seven months, participants were asked how many hours they spent on their hobbies and how they rated their ability to perform at work.
Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work and that they do in an intense (强烈的) way, their on the job confidence can suffer. It’s likely because their work and leisure time have the same mental and physical demands, so they’re always feeling drained.
In contrast, people who have hobbies different from their work are happier and healthier. This is also true of those who choose a similar hobby but only participate in a lighthearted way. Those playful recreations act as a barrier between their professional and personal lives, giving them rest time to “recharge their batteries”, the researchers say.
“When we feel like we have the confidence to handle challenges in our jobs. we’ re more likely to be able to build a sustainable (可持续的) job and remain healthy, productive, happy and employable over our lifetimes. It’s important to consider how our leisure activities might play a role in that process,” lead researcher Ciara Kelly said in a statement.
【1】Why can your hobby improve your mental health?
A.It helps you to recover from your stress. B.It surely improve your physical strength.
C.It enables you to behave more actively. D.It increases your willingness to work hard.
