My parents owned a neighborhood bar called the M Ninety-Seven, named for a nearby highway, on the comer of State Fair and Hoover Avenues in Detroit. Built in the '30s, it had a long wooden bar that was on the right as you walked in. I grew up in the bar. When most kids my age were at the park playing ball or riding bikes, I was watching old men shoot pool and play shuffleboard (沙狐球).
My father spent his entire life serving drinks and bringing cheer to customers. There were the white-collars who would stop in to unwind from the day's stress. They would bend elbows with the blue-collars and day laborers on either side of them. It always surprised me that they were able to mingle(交往).I would sit at the last table by the kitchen, sipping Cokes and eating a bag of Better Made potato chips with my twin sister, watching it all.
It was the 1960s version of a reality show. There was Big Bill, the tough talking policeman who stood six and a half feet tall and weighed just shy of the beer truck he drank daily. His views on society could be hard to listen to at times. But one night, he showed that he was all talk. While Bill was on patrol (巡逻),a call came over the radio about an apartment fire. He raced scout car to the scene, beating even the fire crew. The building was ablaze. He ran up three flights of stairs through smoke and flames to rescue two frightened children. Bill carried them out in his arms like each was a carton of eggs. The man with an explosive mouth but a keg-sized heart had saved the day.
Years passed, my father died, and the bar was sold. Like secondhand smoke, the words and the scenes from that bar stayed with me.

C.Complaining but responsible. D.Talkative and narrow-hearted.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The bar impressed the writer a lot.
B.The father didn't manage the bar well.
C.Secondhand smoke is similar to the bar.

Next time you go on holiday, it’s going to feel pretty different. You may have to wear a face mask. And that means getting your point across in an unfamiliar language—all while keeping your mouth covered—could become a bit of a problem.
That’s where the C-mask, by Japanese company Donut Robotics, comes in.It’s a smart, Internet-connected mouth covering that can make calls, raise the wearer’s voice, and most helpfully for travelers, translate conversations into eight different languages.
If need be, you simply place it over a standard face mask and connect it via Bluetooth to a smartphone. A special app will then allow you to record live conversations, turn them into text and translate them into English, Chinese,French, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Spanish or Vietnamese(currently only from Japanese)—making it easy to understand what people are saying. It won’t actually speak the translated phrases for you, but it does have a built-in amplifier(扩音器)to help you make yourself heard.
“We worked hard for years to develop a robot and we have used what we’ve researched to create a product that responds to how COVIP-19 has reshaped society,” Donut’s CEO recently told reporters. The firm has already raised more than 28 million yen via crowdfunding(众筹)to develop the product, which will go on sale for 3,980yen in Japan.
There are all manner of fashionable, eco-friendly masks you can now get your hands on—check out these in London, Singapore and Barcelona. But in creating an affordable,high-tech mask, Donut could well be on to something.

Do high school grades matter? In most cases yes, especially when you are applying to a good college after high school.【1】So, how to get better grades?
Turn your homework into a pleasant routine. Homework is not always a pleasant thing, but if you do it at a clean and pleasant place that you like, it’ll be less exhausting. Or you may have more energy to do homework in the evening.【2】
Try to turn to others for help. If you feel that you’re lost in some subjects, you can talk with your teacher. 【4】If you are studying for an exam, don’t leave everything for the last day. Start studying as early as possible and process a small part of information every day for one hour or so. The Comeback
Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
“If I can win today,” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”
Laurie was told that she had a tough competition this year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a sound.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her, I may lose tonight.”
“This costume(服装) was my mom’s idea,” Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “ looks like a flag.”
Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. “Something fell out of your bag,” Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
“Jinny,” called someone, “You’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away.”
“I thought I gave him my music tape an hour ago,” said Jinny, “Tell him it’s the green box with my initials written in white in the right-hand corner.”
“He said you never gave it to him. and he’s getting angry.”
“Then I don’t know what I did with it,” said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table.
