Hanukkah(光明节) is a Jewish festival. It is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev(犹太教历), which is usually sometime in December. It is often called the festival of lights. The festival celebrates the time, over 2,000 years ago, when the Jewish people fought against an emperor who would not let them follow their own traditions and religion. When the Jewish people won back their temple in Jerusalem, they found there was only enough holy(神圣的) oil to keep the holy light burning for one day. However, to their surprise, this small amount of oil kept the light burning for eight days and nights, until the people had time to make more oil.
At the center of the Hanukkah celebrations is a candlestick (called a Menorah) that holds nine candles. On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit, and each day this candle is used to light another candle, until on the eighth day, the last day, all the candles are lit. During Hanukkah, people go to the synagogue(犹太教堂) to pray and to remember the miracle(奇迹) of the holy oil. Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together. Getting rid of dirt(灰尘), in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a way to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let illnesses in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king bad closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War ll. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warm(警告)their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

Yoga(瑜伽) is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of union in body, mind, and spirit. It brings us balance. After a long time of practicing yoga, you no longer just practice it--you love it.
Yoga becomes part of your physical(身体的) life. Your body grows stronger, more toned(有弹性的), and more flexible as you move from one pose(姿势) to another. I spent a week in Mexico at a yoga retreat, and it was the first vacation on which I lost weight. “Rather than building muscles, yoga builds muscle tone,” says Shakta Kaur Khalsa, author of KISS Guide to Yoga. “Because yoga helps keep a balanced metabolism(新陈代谢), and it also helps to control weight. Additionally, yoga stretches(伸展;舒展) muscles lengthwise, causing fat around the cells disappear, thus losing weight.”
I do yoga poses throughout the day. After hours at my computer, I stretch my shoulders and arms. When I need an increase in energy, I do energizing poses. When I am feeling tired at the end of the day, I do restorative(恢复体力的) poses.
Yoga becomes part of your mental(精神的) life. Yoga teaches you to focus on breathing while you hold the poses. This attention to breath is calming; it removes stress and anxiety. I use yogic breathing on the tennis court, in the dentist’s chair, and when I’m stuck in traffic.
You should always leave a yoga practice feeling energetic, but not tired. If you feel tired after yoga, it means you spent the time “fighting” yourself, trying to force yourself into poses. In fact in yoga, you can be part of the poses by letting go of the tension and stress.

A. Because when practicing yoga, people will consume a lot of energy
B. Because yoga doesn’t benefit all the people
C. Because he or she doesn’t do yoga poses naturally
D. Because he or she surrenders to the poses by letting go of the tension
【小题4】What would be the best title for this passage?
A. What’s yoga B. How do I do yoga poses
