I come from a city on the United States’ east coast. It’s a ten-hour flight for me to get home from Shanghai. When I got off the plane, I took photos of the blue sky and white clouds along the way. After two weeks, I returned to Shanghai. Much to my surprise, the blue sky in Shanghai that I liked before was not as blue as that in the US. I couldn’t help wondering what had happened.
A few days later, I went to tour Waitan (a famous tourist attraction in Shanghai) by the Huangpu River with some of my friends. There we saw five Ferrari sports cars by the side of the road. The red and yellow cars looked so nice that everyone was looking at them. However, when I turned my head, I noticed the sky over Waitan, I was shocked to find that the buildings in the Lujiazui area on the other side of Huangpu River could hardly be seen. It was then that I realized that Ferrari cars could be bought with money, but a blue sky couldn’t.
Shanghai is an important economic (经济的) and trade center in China. It has made great contributions (贡献) to the whole nation’s economic development. However, we need to protect the environment during economic growth. Pollution is poisoning our air and our rivers. Without clean air and rivers, how will people be able to survive?

【小题4】What can we learn about the author?

B. He is socially responsible (责任).

Good manners are always good manners. That’s what I, as an English, thought, until I married Alexander, who is Russian.
When I first met Alexander, he said to me in Russian, “Nalei mnye chai ? pour me some tea.” I got angry and answered, “Pour it yourself.” Translated into English, without a “Could you...?” and a “please”, it sounded really rude to me. But in Russian it was fine ? you don’t have to add any polite words.
However, when I took Alexander home to meet my parents in the U.K., I had to give him an intensive course in pleases and thank yous (which he thought were completely unnecessary), and to teach him to say sorry if someone else stepped on his toes, and to smile, smile, smile.
Another thing that Alexander just couldn’t understand was why people said things like “Would you mind passing me the salt, please?” He said, “It’s only the salt, for goodness’ sake! What do you say in English if you want a real favor?”
He also watched in amazement when, at a dinner party in England, we swallowed some really disgusting food and I said, “Mmmm ... Delicious.” In Russia, people are much more direct. The first time Alexander’s mother came to our house for dinner in Moscow, she told me that my soup needed more flavoring. Afterward, when we argued about it, my husband said, “Do you prefer your dinner guests to lie?”
Alexander complained that in England he felt like “the village idiot” because in Russia if you smile all the time people think you are mad. In fact, this is exactly what my husband’s friends thought of me the first time I went to Russia because I smiled at everyone, and translated every “please” and “thank you” from English to Russian!
At home we now have an agreement. If we’re speaking Russian, he can say “Pour me some tea”, and just make a noise like a grunt(哼哼声) when I give it to him. But when we’re speaking English, he has to add a “please”, a “thank you”, and a smile.
【小题1】Why was the author worried when she took Alexander to visit her parents in England?
A. She was afraid that Alexander would think her parent were too proud.
B. She feared that her parents would think Alexander was impolite.
C. She thought that they would not able to communicate.
D. She believed that Alexander would dislike them.
【小题2】What did Alexander’s friends think of the author when they first met her?
A. She did not understand Russian customers.
B. She was mad.
C. She was very affected(做作的).
D. She was too polite.
【小题3】Which of the following word best describes the agreement reached by the author and her husband in the final paragraph?
A. An effect. B. A contract(合同). C. A compromise. D. An explanation.
【小题4】What is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Culture Shock B. Learning Manners
C. Unhappy Marriage D. Good Manners Are Easy

Jim is one of my close friend. Two months before, his mother bought a computer for him as a birthday present. She hoped Jim will study hard with the help of the computer. To her surprise, Jim just spent a plenty of time play computer games every day. He was interested them. Now he regrets buying the computer. As the matter of fact, a computer can do a lot of everyday jobs for us. It is wide used in factories, hospitals, banks and so on. Many computer scientists are now trying to make the computer “think” like a man. In my opinion, the key is what we should use it wisely.
