Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to _______.
I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph _______ we realized we were hungry. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $20 bill. I was so excited because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on food seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. _______ I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I ______ I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.
My conscience (良心) opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldn’t get over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and _______ for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I _______ to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream in ______ that someone would say, “Hey, Jeff, why not you use the change from the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so proud of my cash now.
For the next two years, whenever I was _______ of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “Don’t think about it.”
I have learned two things from this _______. Maybe I was a fool for giving in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a _______ pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will ________ up with you.
This reflects the saying, “Coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “________” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only one, or maybe twice.

“Life is speeding up. Everyone is becoming unwell.” This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unwell person who lived in Rome in AD (公元) 53 wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives.
But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?
Picture this: You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.
Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity (电) often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a trendy, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.

It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地) written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I knew that I was talking to a book liar (a person who tells lies).
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. About two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't. In the World Book Day's “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and different authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out), I’ll admit (承认) here and now that I haven't read the whole top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it's really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven't read him, but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be better if the conversation became more in-depth!
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). 42 percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I'll come clean: I do this and am surprised that 58 percent said they had never done so).
【小题1】How did the author find his friend a book liar?
A. By telling it from his way of speaking.
B. By looking into his background.
C. By mentioning a famous name.
D. By discussing the book itself.
【小题2】Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?
A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.
B. 42% of people pretended (假装) to have read 1984.
C. The author admitted having read 9 books.
D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.
【小题3】By lying about reading, a person hopes to _______.
A. control the conversation
B. appear knowledgeable
C. learn about the book
D. make more friends

Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair or your fridge? It is possible that they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, as the so-called "Internet of things" is developing.
The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. It is reported that during his speech earlier this year, Samsung CEO(首席执行官)BK Yoon spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, whether it's a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner(吸尘器).
So, how do household(家用)objects that are part of Internet of things work? Well, think of a usual chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows that the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.
An Internet-connected camera, like a smart-home camera, could help people feel safer in their homes. It can recognize(识别)people's faces, and even can see when someone passes by in the dark. Then it can send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who's there. If the person is someone you don't know, it can tell you that, too.
But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security(安全)systems to the Internet, there may be problems. For example, many early connected-home devices(装置)don't have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked(被黑客攻击),In addition, it could be difficult to get these devices to work together because they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2014.
So, picture this: you walk in through the front door of your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable after a long day at school. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.

C. an Internet-connected camera can be used to take photos in the house
D. an Internet-connected camera can be connected to the user's smartphone

②your fridge provides the drinks for you
