A few months ago, I found myself in a bad situation with an old friend. For some mysterious reasons, he had suddenly turned against me.
I had no idea what to do. Part of me felt self-pitying, part of me felt like I was being oversensitive and should just shake it off, and part of me was so angry and just wanted to beat that friend. At first I wondered who all these voices in my head were to send me such contradictory messages about how to feel and behave. And which voice represented my true self? Thankfully, I have discovered the work of a therapist (治疗专家) named Richard Schwartz who suggests that perhaps none of us is really a single unified self, but instead a combination of various selves. Schwartz reassures us that containing all these different parts doesn’t make us crazy; it only makes us human. He also suggests that if we can identify and name the different parts of ourselves, we might have an easier time managing our lives.
Inspired by this idea, I did some deep diving to try to identify the most important selves living within me. I was able to find and name three.
Meet Lizzy. Lizzy is an anxious little kid who lives in terror of conflict and abandonment. Lizzy annoys me because she’s so helpless, but she also has great strengths. She feels compassion (怜悯) toward everyone because she knows how hard life is.
Meet Elizabeth. Elizabeth is my inner creator. She’s a grand and passionate risk taker. I love Elizabeth because she’s so artistic (she’s the reason why I’m a writer). But she also has a defect: She stubbornly refuses to accept reality.
Meet Ms. Gilbert. Ms. Gilbert is my most grown-up self. She’s the emotional opposite of both Lizzy and Elizabeth. She’s responsible, brave, organized, and independent. But she can also be a strict and an unforgiving critic of herself and others.
If we can find a way for all our parts to peacefully coexist, we might actually have a chance to live in harmony. And that, in the end, is what all of us want.

A. She is brave and kind-hearted.
B. She is really useless to the author.

【小题3】What is the genre (writing style) of the passage?
A. Argumentation. B. Narration.

B. We should give up a bad friendship.

Forcing waiters and waitresses to survive on tips from customers rather than normal wages is a pointless, crude, and unique American custom that, in the past several years, a handful of progressive restaurant owners have attempted to do away with, often with positive results. On Wednesday, one of the most famous names in the dining business says he’s about to join their ranks. Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group, has announced that he plans to gradually eliminate tipping at the company’s 13 restaurants and charge higher menu prices in order to pay staff fairly. Diners wont simply be discouraged from leaving a tip; their checks won’t even include a line to write one in.
What, exactly, is wrong with tipping? As Danny Meyer has explained, more or less it’s everything. To start, leaving a waiters pay in the hands of variable customers has a feeling of classism. And in theory, handing restaurant customers the power to tip is at least supposed to motivate better, more attentive service. This fails in practice because humans turn out to be pretty personal about their tipping behavior. Research has shown the amount diners leave has little to do with their level of satisfaction. All of this doesn’t encourage waiters and waitresses to do anything but turn over as many tables as possible.
Tipping is also very unfair to kitchen staff. The law allows restaurants to divide tips between front-of-the-house workers like waiters, hosts and hostesses, but not cooks. This creates a system in which the people serving the food in a restaurant can earn more than the people preparing it.
Unlike some restaurant owners who have taken an anti-tipping stand, Meyer won’t simply add a standard extra charge to diners’ bills. Rather, Union Square Hospitality Group intends to raise menu prices enough to fully cover the cost of a meal. If Meyer manages to move away from tipping at all without hurting his profits, it would almost certainly set the stage for others to follow suit.

A. Cooks work harder than servers.
B. American’s laws are progressive in tipping.
C. Tipping makes eating-out more expensive.
D. Tipping may be bad for restaurant management.
【小题4】What difference will customers find after eating in Danny Meyer’s restaurants?
A. The total expense is high.
B. The restaurants are crowded.
C. The price of food is high.
D. The food there is very cheap.

Cigarettes aren’t good for any animal’s health, but their harmful ingredients may be useful in certain aspect. A species of urban-adapted bird has apparently begun using cigarette butts (烟头) to “bug bomb” their nests to prevent ticks (扁虱) from taking up their living places, reports New Scientist.
Ticks cause a major health risk to baby urban house finches (朱雀), sucking their blood and even eating their feathers. So finch parents do everything they can to keep their nests tick-free, but it’s not easy. At some point, the birds must have noticed that when cigarette butts are used to pack the nest, the ticks stay away. It’s a remarkably creative and adaptive behavior, even if it means having to live in a virtual ashtray (烟灰缸).
Nicotine has been known with anti-parasitic quality, but researchers weren’t sure if cigarettes -decorated nests were actually providing protection from pests, or if there were some other explanations for the odd behavior. Macias Garcia and his colleagues at the University of Mexico decided to uncover them. They conducted a study involving 32 finches,in which the number of ticks could be controlled.
For the experiment the team added live ticks to 10 of the nests, dead ticks to another 10 and left 12 free of ticks. Sure enough, finch parents were significantly more likely to add cigarette butts to their nests if the nests contained ticks. Furthermore, the weight of cigarette butt material added to nests was 40 percent greater on average when live ticks were involved instead of dead ones, indicating that the birds knew exactly what the butts were doing.
Macias Garcia found that there was a secondhand cost for the birds, however. “Packing nets with cigarette butts isn’t good for the birds either. So it’s a trade-off (权衡), one that the birds make a careful calculation about. The danger that ticks pose now may be greater than the danger the cigarette butts do. Then again, it might also be an example of a short-term advantage superior to the long-term hurt. Hopefully the birds aren’t sacrificing their future health, but researchers will need to conduct a long-term study to know exactly how living with cigarette butts impacts bird populations.” Garcia said.
【小题1】We can learn from the second paragraph that the author seems to .
A. be concerned about finches’ health
B. think highly of what urban house finches do
C. consider living in an ashtray to be dangerous
D. consider the finches to be good at dealing with ticks
【小题2】What does the underlined word “anti-parasitic” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Causing health risks to others.
B. Doing much harm to creatures.
C. Providing protection for finches.
D. Destroying or driving pests away.
【小题3】Why did Macias Garcia and his colleagues carry out the study?
A. To learn how ticks affect finches’ health.
B. To know why finches pack nests with cigarettes.
C. To see how cigarettes protect finches from pests.
D. To show how the number of ticks is controlled.
【小题4】What does Macias Garcia think of the trade-off of finches?
A. It is a wise attempt for finches to do so.
B. It has more immediate benefits for finches.
C. It needs to be figured out by a further study.
D. It puts the future health of finches into danger.

And I still remembered how our house was flooded terrible when I was little. My parents had to get water out of our house with washbasins, with my sister anti me staying safely on the bed and watched. Luckily, my parents said something bad had happened during the storms. Therefore, one day later, I was told by my elder sister that the walls around our yard had fallen down two days ago.
