Chances are that you've had to apologize plenty of times in your life. And there's a good

chance that you've also expressed the phrase, "I never meant to hurt you."

Stop doing that, says author Caroline Myss.

In a talk Myss - a spiritual researcher - took on the topic of forgiveness and healing, and

explained in no uncertain terms why "I never meant to hurt you" is never a sufficient apology, n

  matter who it comes from.

"Picture that person coming up to you and saying, 'Wow, l'm sorry I did this, but, you know ,l never meant to hurt you. And, hey, can we just call it a day?"' Myss says.

Though it can make the two bur\ the hatchet and keep friendship, that type of apology won't sit well with the person on the receiving end. "That whole little thing -  'I never meant to hurt you' - that's the thing you can't forgive," she says. "It goes right to your soul, that toxic  (育毒的,中毒的 )  , sick feeling."

Instead, Myss says it's important to approach the conversation differently. Basically, it's about offering more than an apology. It's about sharing a soul-to-soul confession (仟悔)  . "Let's redo the scene," Myss says. "The person comes up to you and says... 'I need to tell you something. I

consciously knew what I was doing. I know I went against you. This is not an apology. 1 am

confessing my soul to you, and l'm asking now for your forgiveness."'

Even saying those words on stages makes Myss visibly emotional, and she points out that this is how deeply apologies within the soul are supposed to resonate  (引起共鸣)  .

        "That's what heals," she says.      '  .

24.  What does Myss think of the expression "I never meant to hurt you"?

        A.  It must put the friendship to an end.    '

        B.  It is a great way to express the apology.

        c.  It doesn't have any effect on restoring the relation.

        D.  It can't express the apology thoroughly and sincerely.

25.  What does the underlined phrase "bury the hatchet" mean?

       A.  end the friendship                              B.  make up

       C.  bury the fighting tool                          D.  accept the apology

26.  How should we apologize according to Myss?

       A.  We should confess our faults and ask for forgiveness.

       B.  We should say sincerely "I never meant to hurt you".

       C.  We can go into a deep conversation to argue with our friend.

       D.  We are supposed to make up with the other by giving some gifts to him.

27.  What is the author's purpose of writing the passage?    .

       A.  To encourage people to apologize first.

       B.  To tell people how to apologize sincerely.

       C.  To introduce the topic of forgiveness and healing.

       D.   To explain why people can't say "I never meant to hurt you".

At a talk to some businessmen earlier today, one fellow asked me, "Would you give money to

a homeless person, even when you know he's going to use it to buy alcohol?" I replied, "If all

was giving was money, it'll be one thing. But for me, whenever I do give money, that's just the wrapping (包装纸) . The real gift is hidden inside - it's love. And l haven't ever found any reason

to limit gifts of love "

By the end of the night, I decided to get some pizza. In front of me in line was homeless-looking man. He was counting the few dollars bills in his hand, over and over again, until

it was his turn to order. Just then, he told the young woman behind the counter, "I'II have the full

cheese pizza." "Full?" she countered. "It's really big:' she added, although what she really meant to

say is that it'll be too expensive for him. "Yeah, the full " "$18.65," she submitted. The bills he was

counting weren't going to make it. I wasn't intending to get the whole pizza for him. But thinking

back to my conversation with the business man, l realized that money was really just the wrapping.

really." That disheveled man and I had a sweet silent moment. To his silent question of why I was

doing it, l added, "Just pay it forward for someone else." And he said, "Well, you know what? I was

Zebra crossings - the alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface - are meant t

remind drivers that pedestrians may be trying to get across. Unfortunately, they are not very

effective. A 1998 study done by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at Sweden's

Lund Univers ity revealed that three out of four drivers maintained the same speed or even speeded up as they were approaching a crossing. Even worse? Only 5% stopped even when they saw someone trying to get across.

Now a mother-daughter team in Ahmedabad, India has come up with a clever way to get

drivers to pay more attention - A 3-D zebra crossing with an optical illusion  (视错觉)  .

Artists Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya were asked to paint the crosswalks by IL&FS, an Indian company that manages the highways in Ahmedabad. The corporation was looking for a creative solution to help the city's residents to cross the busy accident-prone  (易出事故的)  roads safely. Thakkar and Pandya, who had previously seen images of3-D zebra crossings that gave drivers the illusion of logs(原木)of wood on the streets in Taizhou, China, decided to test if a similar way would work in India.

Sure enough, in the six months that the 3-D crosswalks have been painted across four of the city's most dangerous highways, there have been no accidents reported! The artists say that while it may appear that the zebra crossing could cause the drivers to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind, such is not the case. Because of the way the human eye works, the illusion is only visible from a distance. As they get closer, the painting looks just like any other ordinary zebra

crossing. The creators hope that their smart design will become increasingly common throughout

India and perhaps even the world. So let's look for ward to it.

32.  What can we learn from the first paragraph?

    A.  Most drivers will slow down at zebra crossings

B  Common zebra crossings don't function well

C  Drivers have to stop when approaching zebra crossings

    D.  About 95% of the drivers choose to speed up when approaching zebra crossings

33.  Why do drivers seeing the 3-D zebra crossings slow down?

    A.  Because the drivers consider the safety of pedestrians

B  Because the drivers mistake them for logs of wood On the streets

    C.  Because the drivers are afraid of being fined for breaking the traffic rules

    D.  Because the drivers don't want to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind

34.  The last paragraph is mainly about____

    A.   the theory of the 3-D zebra crossings

    B.   the popularity of the 3-D zebra crossings

    C.   the shortcoming of the 3-D zebra crossings

    D.   the positive effect of the 3-D zebra crossings

35.  What is the author's attitude towards the 3-D zebra crossings?

    A. Cautious    B  Doubtful    C. Approving    D. Disapproving
