When Paul was a boy growing up in Utah, he happened to live near a copper smelter (炼铜厂), and the chemicals that poured out had made a wasteland out of what used to be a beautiful forest. One day a young visitor looked at this wasteland and called it an awful area. Paul knocked him down. From then on, something happened inside him.

Years later Paul was back in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans or if they would let him try to bring the trees back. The answer from that big industry was “No”.

Paul then went to college to study the science of plants. Unfortunately, his teachers said there weren’t any birds or squirrels to spread the seeds. It would be a waste of his life to try to do it. Everyone knew that, he was told. Even if he was knowledgeable as he had expected, he wouldn’t get his idea accepted.

Paul later got married but his dream would not die. And then one night he did what he could with what he had. As Samuel Johnson wrote, “It is common to overlook what is near by keeping the eye fixed on something remote. Attainable good is often ignored by minds busied in wide ranges.” Under the cover of darkness, he went secretly into the wasteland and started planting.

And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and grass. For fifteen years he did this against the plain common sense. Slowly rabbits appeared. Later, as there was legal pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing.

Now the place is fourteen thousand acres of trees and grass and bushes, and Paul has received almost every environmental award Utah has. It took him until his hair turned white, but he managed to keep that impossible vow (誓言) he made to himself as a child.

Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.

AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost 169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost 118.15.

If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoidor you're looking for a big event to pass your timecheck out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.

STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.

Don't be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge's Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was 95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was 75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just 62.95.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative consider checking into a selfcatering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O'Neill Flat on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, available for 420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.

GET ON A BIKE London's “Boris bikes” have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programs that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.

Among the smaller cities with their own programs are Newcastle (casual members pay around 1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or 5 per day)

Many of us mistakenly believe that it’s wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed?

If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn’t like you might be fearful, or shallow or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.

Don’t take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. Although some factors might cause one person to reject you, there are at least many factors that will work in your favor.

You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior because you don’t have much money and you don’t drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason                                        that you don’t have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person.

The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it’s the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.

8. According to the passage, ______ plays an important role in making friends.

A. admitting your shortcomings     B. self criticism      C. modesty  D. confidence

9. If you are not liked by a person, _______       .

A. you should find the reason in yourself  B. you’d better talk with the person face to face

C. you may not be the one to be blamed   D. you and that person misunderstand each other

10. We can learn from the third paragraph that_______        .

A. your goodqualities may make you earn more money

B. your weakness may also be your strengths in some way

C. your negative qualities may cause you to lose friends

D. you’ll have few friends if you don’t share the same interest

11. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?______

A. It is important to lose weight.  B. It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.

C. Inner qualities are more important than physical appearance.

D. If you are not beautiful enough, try to improve your physical beauty.

The connection shared by grandparents and grandchildren is something very special and despite the changing family situation, it still remains strong across generations. For most of us, our grandparents were our first best friends, the ones with whom we shared our secrets and our pain.

In majority of the cases, grandparents would have babysat(照看) their grandchildren while parents were busy working and didn't have much time for their children. Even as a kid grows up, the love and affection for grandparents never dies, and for many teens, visiting grandparents or living with them in the same house is a pleasure. Kedar Patwary, a mass communication student, says, "I often end up having long conversations with my grandfather about the evolution of Indian society and I really admire him for the patience with which he answers all my questions. "

Many teenagers feel that their parents treat them as grown-ups, while their grandparents give them much freedom.

Leela Narayanan, a grandmother, says that she loves to pamper her grandchildren and cook favorite dishes for them. She further adds that her eldest granddaughter, who is now 19, was brought up by her till she was four and the closeness they shared remains the same even now.

At times, the gap generation plays a negative role, when grandparents find it difficult adjusting to the modern lifestyle. Technology is what works against this relationship. Youngsters'  being crazy about with gadgets leaves them with no time for their loved ones.

Maria Kutty, is a grandmother to 12 kids. Her face lights up every time her grandchildren are mentioned. But she has one complaint.  "All my children stay close to me but when they come to visit and I want to spend time with them, I can't find them anywhere. They only have time for clickety-clackety things in their hands. Sometimes they listen to loud music and talk about things I don't understand. I feel very sad when I think of all those times," she says.

12. The author uses Kedar Patwary as an example ______.

A. to show Indian society is full of perfect harmony

C. to show grandparents get on well with grandchildren

D. to indicate grandparents are all good babysitters

13. What does the underlined word "pamper" mean in the passage?

A. Spoil.       B. Raise.       C. Manage.     D. Educate.

14. The gap generation sometimes is negative because_______.

B. grandparents are eager to know more technology

C. grandchildren are addicted to their digital products

D. grandparents spared no time with their grandchildren

15. How does the author develop the passage?

A. By giving example.       B. By following the order of time.

C. By making comparisons.   D. By his personal experience.

Safety in the highway is not something that is totally out of our control. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

17    People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.

Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car can really hurt or even kill you.    18   The safety belt’s main purpose is to pull you back if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of deadly injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes — the type of crash that kills the most drivers — when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy.    19   Effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink.    20   Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties (处罚)for drinking and driving.

A. That’s why safety belts should be worn.

B. How to drive safely?

C. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes.

D. How to protect ourselves in the highway?

E. Air bags are not installed in all cars.

F. Drunk driving is the most serious problem.

    G. You are safer in a large car.
