Right now, 62 million girls worldwide are not in school. They’re receiving no reading, no writing, no math—none of the basic skills they need to provide for themselves and their families, and contribute fully to their countries.

Often, understandably, this issue is considered as a matter of result of a failure to invest enough money in educating girls. We can solve this problem, the argument goes, if we provide more scholarships and safe transportation and build more school bathrooms for girls. And it’s true that investments like these are important for addressing our global girls’ education crisis. But we cannot solve our girls’ education problem until we deal with the broader cultural beliefs and practices that can help cause this crisis and make it continue.

We know that legal and cultural change is possible because we’ve seen it countries around the world, including our own. A century ago, women in American couldn’t even vote. Decades ago, it was perfectly legal for employers to refuse to hire women. But in each generation, brave people –both men and women—stood up to change these practices. They did it through individual acts like taking their bosses to court and even through national movements that brought changes.

Cultural changes like these can encourage countries to make greater investments in girls’ education. And when they do, that can cause a powerful effect that can cause even greater cultural and political progress for women. Girls who are educated marry later. Educated girls also can earn higher salaries. And when educated girls became healthy, financially secure, empowered women, they’re far better equipped to achieve their needs and wishes, and challenge unjust laws and harmful practices and beliefs.

But for me, this issue isn’t just about politics or economics --- for me, this is a moral issue. As I’ve traveled the world, I’ve met so many of these girls. They’re so hungry to realize their promise. They walk for hours each day to school, learning at rickety desks in bare concrete classrooms. These girls aren’t different from my daughters or any of our daughters. None of us here in the USA would accept this for our own daughters and granddaughters, so why would we accept it for any girl on our planet?

As a first lady, a mother, and a human being, I cannot walk away from these girls, and I plan to keep raising my voice on their behalf for the rest of my life. I plan to keep talking about this issue here at home, because I believe that all of us—men and women, in every country on this planet—have a moral obligation to give all of these girls a future worthy of their promise and their dreams.

58. According to the passage, millions of girls _______.

  A. skip math classes for no reason

  A. organizing national movements

A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that the number of dads who choose to stay home and care for their children and families has quadrupled (成为四倍) over the past 25 years. Can social and economic factors explain the change?

Make no mistake; fathers who are the primary caregiver for their children are far from the norm. In fact, they are only 16% of all stay-at-home parents.but that number is up from 10% since 1989. When pew started analyzing data. The steady growth since then suggests that these numbers represent a growing trend.

“It’s up from 1.1 million to 2 million,” says Gretchen Livingston, one of the study authors. “ More significantly, the number of man who say they stay at home specially to take care of their home and children is at an all-time high, more than four times the rate of fathers who gave that same answer in 1989.”

As women have taken on more high-paying careers, the assumption that they’ll stay home with the children has become less automatic.

“My wife and I were earning about the same income at the time just after our daughter was born. We felt that if someone was going to raise our children it would have to be one of us,” says Al Watts, the president of the national At-Home Dad Network. “My wife was promoted shortly after she got back from maternity leave and that rise in pay would allow us to live on one income.”

In 1989, 10% of fathers were stay-at-home parents. In 2014, 16% are. Fourteen percent of the fathers without a high school diploma stay at home, compared to 3% of those with a college degree. In 1989, more than half (56%) of dads who stayed at home cited (引用) illness or disability ass the top reason. Thirty-five percent cite that reason now. Only 5% of stay-at-home dads in 1989 said caring for family was the main reason for staying at home. Now, that number is 21%.

The rise in stay-at-home dads coincides with a change in social and economic trends regarding

women in the workforce, says Farnoosh Torabi, author of When She Makes More. “We know that before they even get married, women are out-earning and out-earning men,” she says, noting that younger women are now getting more degrees and better paying jobs, on average, than men.

61. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph means that ________.

  A. there are not enough stay-at-home dads

  B. being stay-at-home dads is a trend now

  C. stay-at-home dads are still in the minority

  D. stay-at-home dads are making a mistaken decision

62. What impresses Gretchen Livingston most according to paragraph 3?

  A. The total number of stay-at-home dads.

  B. The purpose of becoming stay-at-home dads.

  C. The quick increase in the number of stay-at-home dads.

  D. The reason for the wide acceptance of stay-at-home dads.

63. What made Al Watts decide to become a stay-at-home dad?

  A. His being out of work.           B. His making more money.

  C. His wife’s wage increase.       D. His wife’s encouragement.

64. In Farnoosh Torabi’s opinion, the rise in stay-at-home dads results from _________.

  A. the terrible economic environment

B. the rise in women’s economic status

  C. the ever-increasing cost of raising children

D. the change of men’s attitude towards family.

Doctor Manette had suddenly disappeared. Everything was done to discover some trace of him, but in vain. The loss of her husband caused his wife such pain that she decided to bring up her little daughter, Lucie, in ignorance of her father's fate, and when in two years she died she left little Lucie under the guardianship of Mr. Lorry.

After eighteen years, strange news concerning the doctor had just come from Paris. Mr. Lorry, old Lucie, "your father has been found. He is alive, greatly changed, but alive. He has been taken to the house of a former servant in Paris, and we are going there.”

On arrival, the banker and Lucie were taken to an attic, where a haggard(憔悴的), white-haired man sat on a low bench, making shoes. He was sheltered by a man by the name of Defarge who, with his wife, kept a wine-shop in the district of St. Antoine.

Charles Darnay was of noble birth; but his ancestors had for many years so cruelly oppressed(压榨) the French peasants that the name of Evremonde was hated and looked down upon. Unlike them in character, this last descendant(后裔) of his race had given up his name and wealth and had come to England as a private gentleman, eager to begin a new life. Sydney Carton was a young English lawyer. They soon became frequent visitors at the small house in Soho Square, the home of Doctor Manette and his daughter. Through Lucie's care and devotion, the doctor had almost completely recovered from the effects of his long imprisonment, and it was only in times of strong excitement that any trace of his past foolish behaviors could be discovered. The sweet face of Lucie Manette soon won the hearts of both the young men, but it was Darnay to whom she gave her love. They married.

The French Revolution had actually begun and in 1792 Mr. Lorry and Charles Darnay landed in Paris, the former to protect the French branch of Tellson & Co. and the latter to help an old family servant –Gabelle–who had begged his help. Not until they had set foot in Paris did they realize what a caldron of fury (暴怒) they had been involved in. Mr. Lorry, on account of his business relations, was allowed his freedom, but Darnay was hurried at once to the prison of La Force, there to wait for his trial. The reason given for this outrage(不法行为) was the new law for the arrest of all returning French emigrants(移民), but the true cause was that he had been recognized as Charles Evremonde. Doctor Manette, going to France with Lucie, gained a promise that Darnay's life should be spared.

At last came the terrible year of the Reign of Terror. The sympathy which at first had been given to Doctor Manette had become weakened through the influence of Mrs. Defarge. Also, there had been found in the ruins of the Bastille a paper which contained Doctor Manette's account of his imprisonment, and pronouncing a curse upon the House of Evremonde and their descendants, who were responsible for his eighteen years of misery. Charles Darnay's fate was sealed. "Death within twenty-four hours."

To Sydney Carton, who had followed his friends to Paris, came an inspiration. He once promised Lucie that he would die to save a life she loved. He managed to gain admission to the prison; Darnay was removed unconscious from the cell, and Carton sat down to wait for his fate.

Along the Paris streets six tumbrels were carrying the day's wine to La Guillotine. In the third car sat a young man with his hands tied. As the cries from the street arose against him, they only move him to a quiet smile as he shook more loosely his hair about his face.

Crash! A head is held up. The third cart came up, and the supposed Evremonde came down. His lips move, forming the words, "a life you love."

65. How many characters are mentioned in this passage?

   A. 10                  B. 9             C. 8              D. 7

66. What does Mr. Lorry do?

   A. A doctor             B. A banker       C. A lawyer       D. A teacher

67. what can we learn about Doctor Manette?

   A. Defarge helped him to return to normal.

   B. He lived on making shoes in St. Antoine.

   C. He once experienced much suffering in prison.

   D. He was ashamed to reunite with his daughter.

68. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

   A. Defarge and his wife                      B. Sydney Carton and Defarge

Acting is the activity of performing in plays or films. It’s about living an alternative reality. It lets you explore all kinds of possibilities of what you could be. Just being your own self can be boring sometimes, and acting gives you an opportunity to be someone else for a while. It is voluntarily entering the psyche (心灵) of another personality and thinking according to a different set of values and constraints (约束). It lets you explore many parts of you, which you thought never existed. It lets you deeply explore what it means to be a human being.

One of the best ways to begin your own acting studies is to start reading some good plays. Choose your favorite role from one of your favorite plays and prepare to act it out in front of the audience. To learn to act, you must act. Here are some tips on how to become an actor with no experience:

To play a role, you must understand the character that you are going to play with open arms. Understand the plot of the play, as well as the psyche of your character. Understand the conditions in which your character lives. Try to understand why your character behaves in that way. So you must learn the lines or dialogues thoroughly and explore the thought behind every sentence. This will help you picture the circumstances in which the character finds himself/herself. Some actors go as far as “living” as that person for a while, to understand him or her. The idea is to go as close as possible to being that person. More importantly, only through practice can you get close to actually being that person. So seize every chance and perform as frequently as you can. This will help you develop confidence and overcome stage fright.

As a student of acting, you need to always be a sponge (海绵), ready to absorb, learn, and observe the performances of great actors, to learn the slight differences of the art. While you watch movies, plays and any other performance, study the differences of a role played by any actors, especially the masters. By just keeping your eyes open, you can pick up a lot of things.

Why do you want to act? Is it for money, fame, or genuine love for the art? Would you do it if you were not paid for it? If the answer and your motivation is love for acting, you are sure to eventually succeed.
