 Dear father,

It was four years ago that we found out about the cancer growing inside you. I was still at university. I spent the first few months in surprise. I thought I would always have the ability to control every problem that might come my way. But for the first time I felt powerless. We have been lucky. You responded well to treatment(治疗) and you are still here. Though we have often talked about the cancer and what it means, I have never been able to say what I really want to say.

You are a man of a certain age, traditional and guarded with your emotions. You keep your feelings to yourself and expect others to do the same. But I know you care. I have seen your proud looks when I have told you about success at work and school. I have seen your worry when things haven’t gone well. I remember all the offers of help.

You have always been a person in my life I can depend on. Although we can’t put emotions into words, you have always been the first person I come to when I need help. I wish we could talk about what we mean to each other. I could tell you I love you, and you could tell me you are proud.

You have taught me to believe in myself. You have shown me there are people who I can rely on in life. I am getting married soon and I am so glad you will be here to see that. I hope you will be able to meet your future grandchildren as well. I hope I can be as good to them as you are to me.

Around the world in 80 days-alone

Who knew? Well, we knew a little about Nellie Bly, the woman journalist of the 1890s. After all, she was once considered the most famous woman in the United States. But Elizabeth Bisland? Never heard the name. Let alone that she took the challenge to race Bly around the world. In 80 days. And alone, no less.

But they did. And in Victorian times when women seldom went to the store alone, let alone to Ceylon.

In Eighty Days, Matthew Goodman has woven(编撰) the story of these two women who were as different as the directions they took in the race. Bly, an energetic newspaperwoman who exposed evil(罪恶) wherever she found it, headed east. Bisland, a magazine reporter who preferred the classics, headed west.

Well, we’re certainly not going to tell you which woman won this race. But we will say the two women gave Goodman enough material to bring the 19th century alive, and to show that Bly, at least, ushered(引领) in the world of the famous people we know today. But as is still the way today, the famous people are a slippery slope as Goodman convincingly proves.

Using the writings of both women, Goodman, a creative writing instructor who has written two other nonfiction books, was able to catch what each was thinking and experiencing as they made their way on steam ships and trains. Bly was actually quite dismissive(轻视的) of her competitor. As for Bisland, she at first didn’t even want to take up the challenge.

Some may find what happened to the woman after the race as interesting as their life during the race. Maybe more. Their separate fates were also as different as the two women, right down to their tombstones(墓碑).

Almost 400 pages is a lot of time to spend with these two, and at times it can seem more a slog (hard boring work without stopping) than a race. But if you’re interested in strange little corners of history, Eighty Days won’t seem anywhere that long.

46. According to the passage, in Victorian Times, women __________.

A. liked travelling around the world          B. were independent in work and life

C. seldom went to public places alone             D. were competitive to race against others

47. We can learn from the passage that Nellie Bly __________.

A. was less famous than Elizabeth Bisland

B. was a female reporter who exposed evil

C. was unwilling to take the challenge at first

D. regarded the race as a great event in his career

48. What do you know about the race from the passage? __________

A. Nellie Bly narrowly won the race in the end.

B. The two women raced in the different direction.

C. The two women made their way mainly on trains.

D. Many other women wanted to compete in the race.

49. What can we infer from the passage? __________

A. It would be boring to read the 400-page book.

B. The author has never written other nonfiction books.

C. The author can picture the 19th century to the readers.

D. The famous people today are totally different from those in the past

50. What is the book Eighty Days mainly about? __________

A. The final winner of the race.

B. The history in the Victorian period.

C. The world of famous people in the past and the present.

D. The story between 2 different women in and after the race.

When we were growing up in our grandparents’ home, Jack, my grandfather, was always in his room sitting in the chair and listening to the radio. The voices speaking from the metal box day and night, taught us that there was a larger world outside. He would roll the black dial (刻度盘) back and forth until the signal was clear. Then he would listen.

Now he is old and falls ill. When I went to visit him, he said to me, “I dislike the Internet. The problem is that we’re losing primary contact with each other. No more shaking hands. Everyone is so busy. We want too much and in the process of getting it we miss so much.” He stopped for a while. “It makes me lonely and sad.” Then he looked at me, “I just want to hear your voices.”

I think of all the voices on the radio he has spent a lifetime listening to. I asked, “How did you become interested in the radio?” “I don’t know,” he said. “It was another way to reach people. I was always interested in searching for a better signal, a clearer, more powerful signal that could communicate with someone somewhere.”

“And I’ll tell you another funny thing: you can electronically eliminate all kinds of noise from the signal, but you can’t remove natural noise caused by thunder and lightning, rainstorms, or snowstorms.”

He closed his eyes and smiled. “I was just thinking that in spite of all our technologies, maybe we haven’t progressed that far as human beings. We shouldn’t forget we still have the same basic needs.”
