I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world. Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother.“But the desk,”she said again, “is for Elizabeth,” I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”。But she lived “on the surface”. As years passed, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer, none came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not. Now the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折叠) and refolded many times. Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words. 21. The writer began to love her mother’s desk _______. A. after Mother died B. when she was a child C. before she became a writer D. when mother gave it to her 22. The world “gulf” in the passage means _______. A. deep understanding between the old and the young B. part of the sea going far in land C. free talks between mother and daughter D. different ideas between the mother and the daughter 23. What did Mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness? A. She had never received the letter. B. For years, she often talked about the letter. C. She read the letter again and again till she died. D. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life. 24. What’s the best title of the passage? A. My letter to Mother B. My Mother’s Desk C. Mother and Children D. Talks between Mother and me

According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has found out four sleeping positions that affect personality. Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up(蜷曲),the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side,as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, shows stubbornness, and these people(the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer(僵硬的) than when they went to sleep. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,”according to Phipps. Yearner (向往型) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either seeking a dream or perhaps being sought themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics(批评者),always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead. Perhaps the most strange sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. In conclusion,Phipps has only one more thing to add:“A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.” 25.Which of the following pictures is the fetal (胎儿的) position?
26.The underlined word“rigid” is closest in meaning to“________”. A.stubborn B.flexible C.comfortable D.strange 27.Which sleeping position shows that the sleeper tends to seek perfection? A.The fetal position. B.The log position. C.The yearner position. D.The freefaller position. 28.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

A skilled traveler can take a taxi, buy food in a market, and get directions from a stranger through hand gestures alone. Things can get lost in translation when a typical gesture from your country means something completely different in other parts of the world. Below are some common North American gestures that often cause problems abroad. 1. V in Australia and England In 1992, George Bush visited Australia and from the window of his car, held up his index(食指)and middle fingers in the “V” shape. This V means victory in England, or peace in North America. Too bad it means “up yours” in Australia. 2. OK in France Making a circle with your finger means “great” or “fine” in North America. It’s also used by divers to communicate that there are no problems. In France, however, this gesture means “zero.” Unless you’re doing it to a French diver, you might be communicating that something (or someone) is worthless. 3. One-handed giving in Japan In the West, people aren’t especially mindful of their hands when they offer things to others. In Japan, it is polite and expected for people to make offerings with both hands. If you give someone a business card, or hand them your camera to take a photo, be sure to pass on the item with both hands. This shows that you are fully attentive and careful in the offering. A one-handed presentation might be taken as dismissive(蔑视的). 4. “Got your Nose!” in Turkey A man with the gesture doesn’t have a set North American meaning, except when playing “got your nose” with a child. It also means the letter “T” in American Sign Language. In Turkey, this gesture is very rude. 29. If you want to express your satisfaction in North America, you can use____ . A. “V” gesture B. “OK” gesture C. “Thumbs-up” D. “Got your nose” 30. What can we infer from the passage? A. The gestures are the same around the world. B. A “V” gesture in England means peace C.A “OK” gesture in America means “ZERO” D. You had better give someone something with both hands in Japan. 31. Who might be interested in this passage? A. Americans. B. Japanese. C. Frenchmen. D. Englishmen.

Many people think of the brain as a mystery. They don’t know much about intelligence and how it works. When they do think about what intelligence is,many people believe that a person is born smart, average,or dumb-and stays that way in the whole life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle-it changes and gets stronger when you use it. And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn. Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger. A person who can’t lift 20 pounds when he/she starts exercising can get strong enough to lift 100 pounds after working out for a long time. That’s because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink and you get weaker. That’s why people say “Use it or lose it!” But most people don’t know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise. Inside the cortex(皮层) of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells, called neurons. The nerve cells have branches connecting them to other cells in a complicated network. Communication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems. When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do-like speaking a foreign language or doing algebra(代数)-seem to become easy after learning them for a period of time. The result is a stronger, smarter brain. Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals’ brains. They found out that animals that lived in a challenging environment were more perspicacious-they were better at solving problems and learning new things. 32. According to the first paragraph,________. A.the function of our brain is like that of the muscle B.until now it’s impossible to explain the brain’s mystery C.many people believe one’s intelligence is naturally determined D.one’s brain grows stronger as the age increases 33.Training muscles is compared to________. A.using the brain B.connecting things in your brain C.lifting weights D.doing research about the brain 34.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A.The complex structure of the brain. B.How changes in the muscles affect the brain. C.The importance of the brain. D.How the brain becomes stronger by learning new things. 35.What does the underlined word “perspicacious” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Strong. B.Smart. C.Popular. D.Active.
