Swimming and English Learning

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
    Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, try to catch every word.
    Somebody may be a good listener, but he is afraid to speak because he’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone as long as he knows English. When there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s easier to agree than disagree. The following tips(建议) can help keep disagreements constructive (建设性的).
Don’t make it personal. 
   If you get upset, it can help to remember that you’re mad at the person’s idea, not the person.
Never criticize the other person’s idea. 
   Instead of saying “That’s a stupid idea!”, try:“I don’t agree, and here’s why.” Never shout loudly and you’ll have a much better chance of getting your idea across.
Use “I” statements to communicate how you feel and what you think.

Listen to the other point of view. 
   When the other person is talking, try to stop thinking about why you disagree or what you’ll say next. Instead, focus on what’s being said. When it’s your turn to talk, repeat any key points the other person made to show you have paid attention to what was said. Then calmly express why you disagree.

If you travel to some towns in India, you will be lucky enough to be waited upon by guides—monkeys. These monkeys are always ready to help you. When you are hungry, you only have to point at your own stomach and they will show you to a restaurant. If you are tired, you put your hands behind your head and the monkeys will take you to a hotel. Do not feel surprised, however, when they stretch their hands out in front of you after they have helped you, they just hope you can give them a little money as a tip.
