In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming for a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed 36 and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, a (n) 37 woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that 38 . But one year after I entered college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to 39 her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to 40 . Then I got married with another dream: building my family from a 41 of adopted and biological children(亲生孩子). In 1999, we adopted our first son. A year later came our second adopted boy. 42 , the following year ,we adopted son number three. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can 43 how totally occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of eight. Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprisingly, I never did 44 it back to college full-time. But I never 45 my dream either. I had only one choice: make it work. That meant taking as 46 as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling 47 about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to 48 home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to 49 . But I knew I should set a(n) 50 for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not 51 just single-minded(专心的). It always 52 me that from the 53 , challenges look huge, but when you’re in the midst of them, the same ones seem 54 . Not everything you want arrives in your life in one day. It’s a(n) 55 . The team of psychologists said labels such as ‘helicopter parents’, ‘tiger mums’ or ‘little emperors’ undermine(损坏) parents who place their children at the centre of family life, and assume that parents’ needs come last. In reality, by focusing on maximizing their children’s happiness, they enjoy life and their role as parents more, they claimed. Study leader Claire Ashton-James, from VU University in Amsterdam, said there is little research to support the assumption that investing time in your children comes at some personal cost. Together with psychologist colleagues at the University of British Columbia in Canada, Dr Ashton-James conducted two studies with 322 parents who had at least one child aged 18 or younger living at home. In the first study parents were asked to complete a child-centrism scale to gauge their parenting style. This included the degree to which they agreed with statements such as, ‘The happiness of my children is more important to me than my own happiness’. They were also given a survey to measure the happiness and purpose they experienced from having children by responding to statements such as, ‘My children make my life meaningful’. The researchers found that child-centric parents were significantly more likely to report higher levels of happiness and a greater sense of purpose derived from having children. Parents taking part in the second study were asked to retell their previous day’s activities and report how they felt during each activity. The results found more involved parents had stronger positive feelings, weaker negative feelings, and felt their lives had more meaning during childcare. In addition, the well-being of child-centric parents was not affected negatively throughout the rest of the day, for example when they were doing housework. This indicated their approach to parenting does not hurt their happiness when they are not taking care of their children, perhaps when they might start to feel resentful about how little time they spend on themselves. It also proved that they weren’t exaggerating how much enjoyment they got from parenting to compensate for the sacrifices they made, the researchers said. The report, published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, concluded: ‘We found a significant positive relationship between child-centrism and the subjective happiness and meaning of life that participants reported deriving from parenting,’ According to the findings, Dr Ashton-James added: ‘The consequences of child-focused forms of parenting for the wellbeing of parents have been a source of heated debate in the popular media, largely in the absence of research. ‘These findings suggest that the more care and attention people give to others, the more happiness and meaning they experience. ‘From this perspective, the more invested parents are in their children’s well-being – that is, the more “child-centric” parents are – the more happiness and meaning they will derive from parenting. 59. The passage is meant to __________. A. prove parents’ happiness doesn’t only derive from parenting B. encourage parents to spend more time on themselves C. offer some advice on what to do to be good parents D. argue that child-focused parents are really happy. 60. The underlined word “gauge” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”. A. adjust B. assess C. follow D. form 61. The findings of the two studies________. A. challenge the popular thoughts about parenting B. change the psychologists’ research objectives C. confirm the psychologists’ assumption D. disagree with each other

Scientists predict that one of the world's coldest countries could be covered by thick forests instead of frozen ice sheets by the end of the century, as climate change brings about the “greening of Greenland”. Today only four types of trees grow on the island, limited to small areas in the south. More than threequarters of Greenland is covered by ice. But by the year 2100, “Greenland could become a lot greener, ”says Professor Smith from Aarhus University in Denmark.“Pine tree forests like those in Alaska and Canada will be able to spread over most of Greenland. And it will provide new opportunities for local people.” The research published in the Journal of Biological Sciences shows that, with expected levels of warming, many North American and European trees and bushes will be able to thrive in now icecovered areas of central and northern Greenland. The speed of forest growth will increase as the planet warms and new trees could cover more than 400, 000 square kilometres—an area almost the size of Sweden—by the end of the century. The change is likely to alter Greenland's environment greatly, leading to the loss of Arctic animals and plants. On the other hand, there could be significant commercial benefits for farming and tourism. Humans could play an active role in the greening of Greenland by helping to spread new plant types, says Prof.Smith. “People love growing plants, whether for food or beauty;it's human nature, ” he says.“This could help plant life spread throughout Greenland more quickly. This certainly has positive aspects for local industry and the economy.” However, Prof.Smith warns that, besides all these benefits, there are also risks involved in introducing new plants and animals.“If it is not done carefully, the new life forms could spread in an uncontrolled way as no animals or competing plants have evolved to keep their spread in check.” 62. According to the passage, in what direction is the “greening of Greenland” most likely to occur?
63. Which of the following is mentioned as a likely result of the “greening of Greenland”? A. Fewer people will be able to live there. B. There will be more Arctic animals living there. C. The local tree types will die out at a high speed. D. New forests about the size of Sweden will appear. 64. Prof.Smith's attitude towards the expected changes in Greenland's environment can be described as ________. A. positive B. negative C. objective D. disappointed 65. The topic of the passage is ________. A. the effect of global warming on Greenland B. ways people can expand Greenland's forest C. the promotion of tourism in Greenland D. the Arctic wildlife living in Greenland

While waiting to pick up a friend at an airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people talk about-the kind that happens to you unexpectedly. To me, this happened and was only two feet away from me. Locating my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he walked to his youngest son (maybe 6 years old)as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other's face, I heard the father say, “It's so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!”His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly, "Me, too, Dad!” Then the man stood up, gazed in to the eyes of his oldest son(maybe 9 or 10)and while cupping his son's face in his hands said, “You're already quite a young man. I love you very much, Zach!” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug. While this was happening, a baby girl(perhaps one or one-and-a-half-year old)was squirming(扭动)excitedly in her mother's arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said, “Hi . baby girl!”as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment. After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, “I've saved the best for last!” and went to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed. “I love you so much!”They stared into each other's eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands, For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally attentive I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm's length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, "Wow!How long have you two been married?” "Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied, without breaking his gaze froth his lovely wife's face. "Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!” Two days?I was stunned. I had assumed he'd been gone for at least several weeks-if not months. I know my expression betrayed me. “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!” The man suddenly stopped smiling. He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person, “Don't hope, friend…decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, "God bless!” With that, he and his family turned and walked away together. I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What are you looking at?”Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied, "My future!” 66. Which word could best describe the baby girl? A. Quiet. B. Innocent. C. Naughty. D. Sweet. 67. The writer suddenly felt uncomfortable because ________. A. he felt it impolite to stare at the family B. he felt he withdrew from society C. the family found him curious about them D. he didn't love his wife as much 68. What can we learn from the story? A. The family became the writer's friends. B. The writer decided to look for a wife. C. The writer's family will get more love from him. D. The writer will tell his friend the story immediately they meet. 69. Which paragraph in this story best shows the love of the couple? A. Paragraph 4. B. Paragraph 5. C. Paragraph 6. D. Paragraph 7. 70. Why does the writer think his airport experience is life-changing? A. Because he came across a most loving family. B. Because he realized the difference between "hope" and "decide". C. Because he thought it was really a unique experience. D. Because the family he met with had a strange power over him.

School failure is a process in which a student slips farther and farther behind his peers(同龄人)and gradually disconnects from the educational system. The end result of school failure is leaving school before graduation. Many cases of school failure happen among students who have the ability and intelligence to succeed but are not able or willing to apply these abilities in the school setting. People who fail in school may feel “stupid”, but emotional or mental health problems and “hidden” learning disorders, not low intelligence, often are the root causes of their inability to meet the standards of a school. The following are some factors that can lead to school failure. Depression is one of the most common causes of school difficulties. It is a condition that makes people trapped in low spirits for long periods of time, have less energy, and lose interest in studies that normally give them pleasure. Anxiety is a feeling of excessive worry about a possible danger or an uncomfortable situation that is intense enough to interfere with(妨碍)a person’s ability to concentrate and focus. Students also may bring their problems at home to school with them. If a student’s family is experiencing violence, unemployment, or any other upsetting situation, it can be difficult for him to concentrate on schoolwork. Many students who are having family problems might have trouble controlling their anger and frustration at school, and they may end up in trouble because of their behavior. Learning disorders are conditions that interfere with gaining specific academic skills, such as reading or writing. Learning disorders can damage a person’s ability to process or remember information. Students at risk of school failure need to be identified as early as possible in their school careers if they are to receive the help they need. This task usually falls to the teachers and parents. Parents can help by taking a genuine interest in their children’s school life and attending school events. They should take seriously sudden changes in their children’s behavior, sleeping, or eating. Besides, they should help their child identify what he or she is bad at or good at. On the other hand, there are a lot of things teachers can do to help those students who fail in school. For example, they can develop learning plans that support the students’ strengths, carry out evaluations about their possible learning disabilities, support their learning by teaching them how to study, and encourage them to participate in school activities, such as sports, plays, or clubs, so that they feel they are a part of the school.
